Title: Brian's New 2014 Empulse R mods.
Post by: BrammoBrian on May 20, 2014, 12:29:30 PM
Ok... first couple of mods underway.  Just thought I'd share.

Rizoma sport aluminum tapered handlebar.  The position is just right for the Empulse and the stock 2014 bar clamps accept the larger diameter bar without needing to use the kit parts I needed for the 2013 bike.

Upgraded to Magura 195 radial master cylinders for brake and clutch.  I love the look and feel of a good radial lever and I especially like the reach adjustability and feel of these levers.

Next up - Competition Werkes tail tidy kit, Rizoma (or similar) LED turnsignals, some red accents to match my seat!

Looks great Brian. I just can't help thinking that those reservoirs look like the sample cup my doctor hands me every year at my physical. But those handlebars really pop.

I suppose they are an acquired taste, but remote reservoirs always say "fast" to me...

The remote flexible rubber-mounted reservoir on my BMW F650GS's handlebar says "bobble-head" to me (and a lot of other owners).   ::)

Looks great! I'm been thinking about a MC upgrade, especially as I track more. Curious...why Magura and not 19x18 Brembo or Accossato?

I think the Brembo and Accossato master cylinders would be good choices as well.  I've had some previous experience with the Magura radials and knew that I liked them. They are offered in cylinder sizes that closely match the production master cylinders, so I also knew the braking power and feel would be good.  I'm not sure if Brembo or Accossato offer a matching hydraulic clutch master cylinder.  Magura's 195 clutch cylinder is also a good match to the stock cylinder size at 13mm.

Empulse Stock M/C Piston diameter:
Brake master cylinder = 16mm
Clutch master cylinder = 12mm

Got my Competition Werkes Fender Eliminator + Rizoma "Action" LED turnsignals installed this past week. Just noticed the Fender Eliminator is still not up on their site, which I cannot explain... so we'll have to put a call in next week to see what's up with that.  Whole thing took about 15-20 minutes to install.  Very simple.

Looks very good, Brian.

I have had my yellow Empulse R for 2 days and have received some comments about the long tail section (and the orange reflectors front and rear and the long chain adjusters but those can be fixed easily).
I looked at the Competition Werkes website but still no sign of a product for Brammo. Anyone with news on that?

Have to wonder……… if Brammo(?) engineering thinks the aftermarket parts swaps are such an improvement over the replaced OEM components, either esthetically, mechanically, ergonomically, what does that say about the pieces the rest of us are stuck with?  Can’t wait to see the future aftermarket additions that would apparently also have been a better OEM design consideration.

Just my opinion, but I think the pictured reservoir piss jars are obtrusive compared to the subtle OEM selection, - they got that right!  And yes, adjustable hand levers probably are a valid swap in consideration the inevitable difference in owner’s hand sizes.  Even my lowly Bonneville came with OEM adjustables.  Why wouldn’t the off-the-line Brammo models rate the same, and maybe some adjustable handlebars?  Curious in light the other Bramm top-of-the-line OEM components.  Some quality mirror optics would have been nice.

I removed those reflectors, it is a 5 minute job. And in the Netherlands it is legal to ride without them! Only the red reflector below the licence plate is mandatory.
Cutting the licence plate holder so there's nothing sticking out from the licence plate was also very easy to do.
This can be a first step in improvement of the looks. The long tail helps with moving back the tail pack so I left it for the time being.

kingcharles, - could you explain how you removed the reflectors from the from the sides of the Empulse front fender?

On the European bikes they are fastened with two hex screws, just remove the two screws and you're done.  Put them back in after taking out the reflector as they also hold the fender in place.

I think that US bikes or pre 2014 could be different judging by photos.

I removed mine too, piece of cake.
I included a photo of the European front reflector. Looks like the US models have them glued to the fender.

Looks like the US models have them glued to the fender.

Just some foam-backed double-sided tape.  Fairly easy to pry off with a flat-blade screwdriver and some patience to avoid scratching the fender.

Been wanting to do this modification for awhile now after some success racing the TTX at Indianapolis with a mono-brake setup.  Note the missing parts from the left side of the front wheel...

Saves about 5lbs of unsprung mass off the front wheel.  I went with the Magura 195 Radial Master Cylinder for the brake and clutch.  The brake cylinder is 13mm, the smallest Magura makes, in order to provide adequate pressure for the single caliper - i.e. half the piston area.

Here's a shot of Shelina racing with this setup at Indy...

I'll need some more time on it to see if I like the braking power and feel on the street.  I'm pretty sure it will work great for track use (mostly Thunderhill for me) though and would be worthwhile for other racers out there to consider if you're mostly riding at fast, flowy tracks.

That's interesting. Never seen a racer go from 2 rotors to 1. Are the brakes really that much overkill? I guess if you race exclusively on flowy tracks...

It seems to me that not only the brakes but the wheels, tires and forks are oversized and would drop a few pounds. I tried buying Jeff's crashed bike to mod and use as a track bike but haven't heard back from him in a while

BrammoBrian I left you a voicemail concerning the TTX. Are or were they for sale and if so what's the price and difference between it and the R. When I test rode an Empulse the dealership said that they were for sale to "teams" but don't know if that means sponsored teams or privateer club racers. Sorry I know this is off topic but I saw the TTX mentioned.

Brian is probably too busy making space in his garage for a 2015 Empulse RR ;)

Not sure how much this helps but all (well, most) of the TTX parts are available in the accessories catalog. Just buy an R and all the bits you want. Off the top of my head the only thing not in the catalog would be the custom seat. Forks, wheels, shock, and even clip-ons, if I remember right, are all in the catalog.

Just checked out the parts catalog, oof...that's an expensive build. Though I suppose, what race bike isn't? Has anyone bought parts there before? How responsive are they?

Still waiting for it...

I appreciate the info! I did see the Ohlins forks and the what are they Oz wheels in the catalog but I was trying to find out if there were any motor or battery performance modes on the TTX and or if it was somehow tuned for the track.

Wow, OK, been a while. Sorry about that. Ah, no changes to the battery or motor. However, I am pretty sure if you decide to race it they'll work on what little programming changes are available to the controller and possibly the BMS. I believe the spirit behind the BMS was a true SuperSport for the club racer and to keep the motor and batteries as dead reliable as possible.
