Brammo Enertia Plus / Test Drove Plus Today

Test Drove Plus Today

The last time I drove an Enertia was within a week of their introduction at Best Buy. I was underwhelmed; very slow off the line, low top speed, no regen, terrible turning radius, fan ran constantly, ran out 1/3 of the battery on a short test ride. I know Brammo re-jiggered the power curve on the initial Enertia after I drove, but there were too many checks on the negative list.

Today, different story. At first the Enertia looked overly tall next to the Empulse at the Harley dealer that carries the Brammos here in SoCal now, but as soon as I got on and was able to maneuver the bike out of the lot (much better turning radius) I started to enjoy the ride. The dealer drove an Enertia 1, so I had some comparison. The bikes were much faster off the line than my ride a few years ago. I can’t be certain, but it’s possible the Enertia 1 was a tad quicker off the line than the Plus, but that’s where the 1’s  edge ended. The Plus did better in the mid range and when the 1 seemed to be winding out in the mid 50’s the Plus gave a burst more and shot up to 65. (we were only on the freeway a short while so I don’t know max speed.)

There’s a little bit of regen on the bike now, doesn’t stop the bike quickly, but does feel much more like ICE bike and doesn’t freewheel when you want to back off the speed a bit. Much nicer.

I don’t think I heard the fan go on once, maybe the motor and/or controller is more efficient. Maybe it was just a cooler day.

The battery charge was still over 90% when we pulled back in.

Still no pegs for a passenger, but much improved.

Have you tried the Plus or are you all past that and onto the Empulse?

It was my understanding that both off-the-line and top-speed of the enertia was limited by software in order to maximize range. In fact, two days after my test drive of the enertia (classic) I got a call from a brammo engineer to say they had increased the low end acceleration via a software update. It had certainly been slow off the line.

If your commute is only 25 miles or so, the larger capacity batteries on the enertia plus would have no trouble getting you there even at the decreased efficiency of highway speed. All that’s necessary would be a software upgrade by brammo or hack by a third party. While they’re at it there’s no reason why regen breaking couldn’t be added for safety as well as range extension. I haven’t been following closely, has the enertia plus added regen yet?

The gearbox in the empulse may be a gimmick or a work-around to not overheat the motor, but we know the tesla roadster had a top speed of 125 mph as well as 0-60 in under 4 seconds. An electric drive train does not require a transmission.

but I may be wrong.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Can we attend the May 8th unveiling?

I've been on the enertia plus list, but wanted to check out the empulse and I live close (1.2 miles from event) so I added my name to the empulse list last week. Received invite this morning. Who knows, I may be caught up in empulse fever.

Thoughts I had when I rode the brammo:
-steering range: It would make the car/bike dance in my one-car garage a challenge. My old bimmer had a much shorter turning radius.
-throttle mapping: (I got a call the next week from a brammo tech who said they’d re-mapped it.) It had been slow off the line.
-regenerative braking for safety: If you’re driving on country roads (like say Ashland) you don’t really need regen. But in LA, you definitely want that “engine braking” to start slowing the bike the instant you let off the throttle.
-motor fan. It seemed strange and inefficient to me that on a relatively cool day the motor fan was running the entire time I was riding. Couldn’t the air be vectored to cool the motor while at speed?

I still had a blast riding the bike and I read Harry’s blog every week to see how the bike is progressing.
