Bikes For Sale Or Auction / '13 Brammo Empulse R, $3,000 (sold)
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:28:33 PM »
21,468 miles. Single owner. Title in hand.

Does not charge. I am pretty sure it is just the well-known wiring harness issue as it happened after I got a new job and started level II charging at work, but I tried hard-wiring around the offending harness and it still would not charge. Could be that I'm not a mechanic and the bike doesn't like my bodged fix, or it could be something else is more broken. None of the local shops will touch it. I replaced it with a Zero and now I just want the space in my garage back.

It stopped charging in April 2018, and the bike has been sitting ever since. I limped it home from work, and parked it with ~25% SOC. It does turn on. I am confident it would move if you wanted to ride it. That said, it shows 0% SOC, and the battery is likely far out of balance.

Front tire has very few miles, as do the chain and sprockets. I have a second set of new, never installed, sprockets that will go with the bike. One of the fairing bolts is cross-threaded in the frame, and one of the front turn signals has a broken outer lens (from me being careless in the garage). I did tip it over once in a parking lot when I lost my footing getting on, otherwise it has never been down. The front fender has holes where I had extra LED lights mounted (they have been transferred to the Zero). Also has heated grips installed.

I bought the bike to ride, and I did in almost all weather conditions for ~10 mo/year in Chicagoland. It's dirty and well loved. I am disappointed I didn't get more use out of it.

Local pickup only. The bike is somewhat taken apart, and I assume anyone interested would prefer it that way for inspection, etc.

I'm not on the forum very often. E-mail is best:

I dug in to the bike looking for problems. I found the melted connector, but it didn't look too bad. It was definitely melted, but still intact. I looked for a dead cooling fan, too. Nothing obvious.

I asked the local dealer if they could order me the new connector. They said Polaris wouldn't sell them one, so I am on my own.

So I ordered some common wire splices. Be careful working on this connector. I thought the connectors ran between the plug and the charger based on the color of the wires. Nope. 95 volts DC running through mine. It's between the charger and the battery. Disconnect the main plug, and it's safe to work on. I spliced the wires together. But still no current being drawn when connected to an EVSE.

I am guessing I am having this problem:

At this point the motorcycle is getting too demanding, so I may just give up. If anyone else has any ideas, hit me up.

Mine just stopped charging, too. I just recently started charging more often at level II, so my habits fit the description of the problem.

It has been sporadic on displaying charging amperage for a few weeks (although still charging), so I suspect that was a precursor.

I'll post up what I find.

Brammo Empulse / Re: B55 Error, SOC Mismatch >30%

The battery is still under warranty, no question there.

Unfortunately the dealer couldn't get Victory to budge on replacing the module causing the errors. Victory told them to do a full discharge and recharge, and said the problem would go away. They did, and sure enough, all the cells were balanced according to the BMS. The dealer wasn't impressed with Victory's response, but there isn't anything else they can do.

I'll be picking the bike up sometime next week. I hope I can make it the 42 miles home now that it's colder. Especially considering I couldn't make it there...

Wow, that's crazy that the packs seem to be struggling as they age. Mine has just over 20k miles, and was delivered to me in February 2013. I'd have more miles, but two fully riding seasons were cut out thanks to injury, and then the bike sitting at the dealer for a summer.

I am pretty aware of battery maintenance fundamentals. I used to work in the Navy's battery program (I got to terminate the contract for the ASDS battery after that Li Ion burned down the $3B sub) and now I work at Argonne National Lab, DOE's lead battery lab (home of Michael Thackeray and Khalil Amine, among others). I'm no scientist or engineer, but I have gotten to interact with some of the world's smartest minds in batteries in both research and applied settings. I currently authorize work for private companies who want to use Argonne to solve their problems which means I see the problems battery companies are having. In other words, I'm not abusing the batteries beyond riding in normal conditions for Chicago.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the Chinese cells used in our packs did not have the most consistent build quality. I wonder if Polaris even knows how to check for good cells? I hope the bad module gets replaced, in any case!

Update time since I forwarded this chain to the new dealer working on my bike on this issue...

I road the bike all year this year. Maybe 4,000 miles. I got the error early in the year, but have not seen it since April or so. I have actually been getting Motor and Motor Controller over voltage errors more often now, which is a bigger pain because those errors cut power...and only happen during WOT, like when merging or pulling out in to traffic.

This year the bike felt down on power compared to what I remember. Especially at higher speeds. I would get "recharge battery" warnings with the SOC as high as 55% while cruising at 75 mph if it was under 60*f. Then, on the ride to the dealer this weekend, at 39*f, cruising at 60 mph with the SOC somewhere around 25% (40 miles in, and 2 to go), the bike dropped to 0% and died. I cycled the ignition, made it another mile before it died again. Cycled the ignition again, and coasted the rest of the way in. I'm glad I did not take the interstate to get there - I would have never made it. I wish I could have looked at that drive log!

Being in Chicago, I don't know if I would make the 35 mile round trip during the cold months with the bike in its current state. That would be a bummer because commuting is really the only time I ride the bike now that I have a baby. If the bike won't work when it's under 50*f, that takes away half the year.

The dealer that has it now is a Zero dealer, too, so hopefully they have a bit more incentive to keep early adopters like me happy since we are driving that business. My fingers are crossed!

I had heard it is ok to keep it charged to 100% even for long periods of time.

That is not true. Batteries are essentially a big chemical reaction. When the battery is fully charged, it has a lot of energy stored. Think of it like a balloon with air that is constantly trying to escape. When the battery is sitting with a lot of energy, some of it is going to find places to escape, and in a battery that is usually reacting with things that weren't meant to have a reaction - usually the electrolyte or the structure of one of the electrodes. These mistaken chemical reactions are almost always irreversible. The reason it is better to store the battery at a partial charge is that these freak reactions happen exponentially less. As Siai said, the actual proper SOC to store at is up for debate.

On the other hand, the absolute worst thing you can do to a Li Ion battery is run it completely dead. In that case the copper in the anode gets exposed and actually becomes active material. (it becomes a "copper ion" battery, sort of.) Once enough copper is reacted, the internal resistance increases and the ability for the cell to produce current decreases. That is also irreversible. This happening once is enough to brick the battery.

So, if you have an option between storing at full charge or empty, full charge is better. In the winter I bring mine down to 80% and then check it every month or two.

Paul - sorry for your luck. You're in Chicagoland, correct? Which dealer did you go to? Mine sat at a dealer that has since closed for four months last year, and the problem was never resolved. My battery warranty is up in Feb, and I'm going to bring it someplace this fall to get it finally sorted out, once the weather turns cold.

It sounds like you got great service from the dealer, at least relative to what I got from the other. Did you go to Gina's or Randy's? I tried going through Gina's for sprockets, but they never returned my calls, and when I called the back they told me that they were essentially not interested in the business because it was too hard. I'm leaning towards Randy's in Marengo now. But if Gina's has already been through the ringer with Polaris with your bike, I may go there instead.

I lost all of last riding season with the bike sitting at a dealer. I took it back after four months, unfixed. Dealer said it would be covered under warranty, but could not ever get the support from Polaris to do the repair. The problem still pops up, but the bike is rideable, so I keep riding. I figure I'll bring it back to the dealer this fall since the warranty expires in February.

Good luck fixing your problem, CAT.

Brammo Empulse / Re: 2013 Empulse Sprockets
« on: May 22, 2017, 09:35:23 AM »
I saw that, but my mechanic isn't confident.

We are going to ship out the OE sprocket to Sprocket Specialists, and they are going to scan it and make one based off the OE piece. Once we confirm it works, they will be able to reproduce for anyone else. Any dealer with a relationship with Sprocket Specialists should be able to order from then on.

Or, you can go through my guy - Ken Krebs at Chicago Performance. He does extended swing arms and ridiculous stuff like that mostly, but we race bicycles for the same team and I trust him to do good work.

I'm needing to replace my chain and sprockets. Has anyone had any luck sourcing a front sprocket?

If not, I may look in to having a machine shop make a batch...

My bike did something similar when one of the battery modules wasn't working. Pull the logs and see if one of the modules is causing the SOC readout to be funky.

If it is the same problem I had, eventually you will get a SOC mismatch error.

Good luck.

Check all your connections around the headlight. I seem to remember something similar happen to mine, and it was just a loose connection at a plug. Now I am experiencing intermittent front turn signal function...the 12v connections are not particularly good on the Empulses.

If the 225-450 VDC is output, then it would not be compatible. Empulse is rated at only like 105 volts, so would charge at a slightly higher voltage than that. It would not charge at 225 volts.

The problem was Harley branded the box as a "street performance tuner," so it's hard to argue that it is only for off-road use. Plus they kept the full factory warranty after the box was installed.

That is a pretty big fine. Their stock price hasn't been affected yet...
