Title: New fluoride battery design
Post by: Richard230 on February 09, 2019, 09:31:20 AM
Honda, Caltech and NASA are trying to develop another "world-beating" battery, this one based upon fluorine. (Not everyone's favorite chemical on the periodic table, but they are tossing in a little copper and lanthanum, too - whatever the heck that is.) If they can get it to work, the claim is that it could have 10 times the power density of a lithium battery.   :o

You can read a few words about it here:  https://cleantechnica.com/2018/12/08/honda-nasa-caltech-claim-fluoride-battery-breakthrough/

But doesn't EVERY new chemistry provide 10X density and will be ready in 3 to 5 years??

As for me, I don't think I'll be holding my breath. ::)

As to lanthanum:

Lanthanum oxide was priced at 7,810 U.S. dollars per metric ton in 2017.

Although classified as a "rare earth element", it's actually more abundant than lead, but costly to produce.
