Title: Bar end mirrors
Post by: FreepZ on February 24, 2013, 09:55:58 AM
I've decided that I should put some bar end mirrors on my Empulse, but realized that they don't work like I thought they would. I though that when I removed the screw from the end of the handlebar, the plastic end cap would side off and I could insert something in there. That didn't work.

Shinysideup added bar end mirrors.

I have a few questions about them.

Pricey but they are very well machined, and function perfectly. Eliminates blind spot, but I still use headchecks. Fold for lane-splitting (filtering), and return exactly where you want them.

On this bike, they require an CRG adaptor that mounts inside the bar.

Hey Freepz,

that plastic piece is just a plug.  I switched mine out to the same one as shinysideup.

I just took a good wrench and gave a light pull and the plastic insert comes out.  Then you just get left with the metal tube for the handlebars.

Those mirrors are the one you want.  Just need to purchase the CRG adapters that fit in it.

What 7Racer said.

You'll definitely need the adapters, as listed at the bottom of your link:

"Optional Billet internal Bar End Mirror Adapter Kit will allow internal mounting on virtually any handlebar/clip-on"

I've been using the mirrors for about 1200 miles and like them. I have them adjusted so about 1/2 of the lane behind me is visible in the inner portion of the glass. This eliminates blind spots in the lanes next to me, though, of course, I still do headchecks. The folding feature works perfectly: they return to exactly where I set them, every time.

You might see some savings if you buy a complete set.

There are a pair with inserts on the Cycle Gear ad for like $25 each and another for $35. I can pick some up if people want em. There's one in Portland (or you can order online, either way).

There's these:

Those cyclegear mirrors look like a good deal. One thing to keep in mind about the CRG mirrors are that the mirror elements are replaceable. I've broken two before by smacking them on things really hard. :(

that is a great deal!  Are those the foldable ones though?

The CG ones are. There's two types.

Got mine installed today. Took off the stock mirrors. I had done the same on the Enertia. Now I can see behind me again.

nice!  I also used those car plastic push plugs and placed those in the holes from the mirrors.  The ones I found had a smaller head that made it look stock

Rhino Moto also makes some really nice bar end sliders that also have a groove to mount CRG mirrors:  http://www.rhinomoto.com/bar-end-sliders.html (http://www.rhinomoto.com/bar-end-sliders.html)

I put a set of the Rizoma bar end mirrors on my bike, but they are a little too small.  The CRG Lane Split mirrors give much better visibility and the folding feature is nice.  In hindsight, I would have stuck with those and not experimented with the Rizomas (more style over function).

Do you know which bar ends for the Empulse bars?

The interior dimension of the bars on the Empulse is 18mm, so the .675"-.725" Mirror Mounts should probably work.

Hey #47, I'm not sure if you've ever run those mirrors before, so disregard the advice if you have. You might consider rotating your mounts 180 degrees. When you have them set up from the front like that, it leaves the glass vulnerabile if you ever hit one on something. They'll flick back hard enough to break the glass against the end of the bar. Of course this makes them even harder to see, so rotating them only 90 so that they point up is a nice compromise.

I always see them mounted like that, and so that's how I used to run mine. After breaking two, I changed. I think it's all a plan for them to sell more replacement glass. :)

Good point. This was how I had them on the Enertia. I will check your idea out.

Thx Ain for helping me to spend more money :)

Ok...ordered the Rhino bar ends and a left lane split mirror...

In New Mexico you only need one mirror...

But I'm rethinking it and will likely get the right mirror too...I like the look of one mirror, but I'm not cool enough to pull it off...

I like the look of one mirror too...and you're totally cool enough to pull it off.

Well, hey, there's lookin' cool and there's stayin' alive. Despite Hollywood,  Madison Ave., those Italians, there are limits to style.

Yeah, the staying alive is the reason I'll probably get the right side mirror...

In New Mexico I swear the cage drivers are actively trying to kill you...it's not that they don't see you on a motorcycle....it's that they see you and want to harm you

These probably wouldn't work with bar end mirrors, but could still be a very cool mod

I watched his kickstarter video and indeed it does work with bar-end mirrors. It's definitely a cool idea. Not for me though. I prefer the visibility of a traditional turn signal with a lens. I feel tiny LED signals are too specular and easy to miss, whereas an illuminated lens provides a more diffuse light source.
