Tesla exaggerated their cars' battery ranges
« on: July 29, 2023, 04:37:49 PM »
It looks like Tesla was fibbing a bit when they specified long battery ranges for their cars.  ;)  See the attached article that was in my newspaper today.
current bikes: 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2007 BMW R1200R, 2005 Triumph T-100 Bonneville, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

Hi, I find articles like these on EV range meaningless. Whilst likely to be true, context is everything. Texas has 85mph speed limits etc. All  vehicles suffer poor economy at first start in cold weather and improve with time and distance travelled. Vehicles base their range on how they were driven on a previous journey and then update as the new journey passes. A Jaguar I owned would show 8mpg at the end of my street after a cold start and gradually improve to 25 mpg by the end of a 35 mile journey. My neighbor commutes a third of a mile each way every day to work and back in her 1.5ltr Mazda. No manufacturers or government figures for that journey.
Monro live , on YouTube show Tesla does the best job of any EV maker in managing heat in their cars to help the occupants and efficiency, with a fancy valve arrangement circulating fluid around the batteries, motors and cabin. Lithium batterys are known for poor performance in the cold, hence why cars have preheated, Mobile phones are at body temperature so are less affected, but I've had issues with cold laptops.
Do you think the readership pay much attention to these articles? Does it influence car sales?

I have owned two Tesla's in my life, a 2014 Model S and a 2018 Model 3.  Both were single motor cars with the minimum diameter wheels installed.  Operating in central Florida, both cars would meet their rated range if driven carefully.  Cold weather, rain, high speeds, etc. would impact range.  I recently drove a friends new model Y, dual motor, with 20" wheels.  In Michigan, I was hard pressed to get a reliable 200 mile range out of a car that is supposed to do over 300 miles.  When driven to the best of my ability (for range) I was able to get within a couple of miles of the rated range.  Driving it without care for acceleration and speed limits just killed the range.  Remember, all these cars were tested by the government and certified as to their range---and that is what is advertised.  Look at our Empulse's and you can meet the rated range---but that's no fun.
