Brammo Empulse FAQ / Re: 2014 Empulse $1000
« on: May 01, 2017, 05:11:09 AM »
I rarely use the clutch.  The bike responds too well to clutchless shifting techniques that I don't bother.  The only thing the clutch does in my opinion is allow you to over-rev on a shift.  The only useful thing it does is when you are maneuvering it around in a parking space and you want to prevent yourself from losing control if you accidentally goose the throttle as you pull on the bars while looking over your shoulder.

As for shifting, it is really not necessary.  As for stopping, it is completely not necessary.

To be clear, the technique I use is when I want to shift up is to apply a slight upward pressure on the shifter and then lightly let up on the throttle and it snicks cleanly into the next gear.  The reverse works well for downshifting, or sometimes you have to give a tiny bit of throttle if you are slowing on regen and want to downshift as the regen can also keep the gears from shifting and a tiny bit of throttle releases that bind.

Brammo Empulse / Re: NEMA 5-15 3.8kW charger??
« on: March 16, 2017, 01:52:07 PM »
It shows a 5-15 in the pictures, but the line claiming compatibility with multiple outlet types says "with adapters".  It's hard to tell from the pictures if the 5-15 pigtail is removable and they don't mention providing any other outlet adapters or show any in the pictures, but that would have to be how they did it.

Technically the Tesla UMC is a similar product that varies its output depending on which outlet adapter you put on the end of it.  (But, at 10kW max power.)

Sounds like a plan....  I hadn't even noticed the spool mounts on the swingarm....  The only thing that bothers me is that the manual says the swingarm should be static (unloaded) when adjusting the chain?

I don't believe that a spool lift adds any load to the suspension.  The bike is already supported by (and the suspension is between the main frame and) the rear sub-frame.  But the sub-frame is normally connected to the ground through the rear wheel/tire.  You are only changing the way that the sub-frame is connected to the ground, from the wheel to the jack.  I believe that they mean "don't sit on the bike" or "don't suspend it by the main frame" when adjusting the chain.

I'm not referring to the mirror stem, I'm referring to an adapter that goes between the mirror stem and the mount in the handlebars.  One of my mirrors had the adapter, the other did not.  It just screws on so it is removable and transferable.

The adapter is small, it's just a nut with a piece of threading welded to it.  You might not even see it if you didn't lift the rubber boot on the mirror high enough.  I took a picture of the ends of my mirror stems and the adapter (which was sheared in 2 when I dropped my bike or I'd send you mine) so you can see what I'm talking about.

One of my mirrors has a thread reversing thingamabob on it.  Did you check the old mirror to see if you can transfer it to the new mirrors?

Brammo Empulse / Re: Need advice,I bought a wrecked empulse R

The 2014 models had an updated instrument cluster (i.e. all of the gauges) that was plug compatible with the 2013 cables so you should be able to buy a new cluster and plug it in if the Victory dealer can find the part number.

If you type in Brammo/Empulse/2015 on the woodcraft site they show a Hindle Exhaust coming soon!  I've always thought the stock exhaust on these bikes was kind of quiet, I wonder how much power it's robbing us...

Brammo News And Views / Re: Brammo's 5th Patent
« on: May 19, 2016, 06:35:04 AM »
After filing a number of patents, one learns not to add any details to a patent description that aren't vital to the invention itself, otherwise a competitor can implement your invention with that one detail omitted or changed and claim that they are not infringing.  I've sat in meetings with patent attorneys poring over every detail and making sure it was required for the invention.

If the transmission is not required for the squat mechanism then they should not show it in the drawings and probably shouldn't have mentioned it in the text.  The drawings in their patents have nothing to do with their actual products, they are theoretical mechanisms used solely to demonstrate the patent.

You should have seen the diagrams of a computer included in my software patents.  Nobody would build a computer like that, but it was the least specific way to describe the computer in which it was implemented...

Off Topic / Re: Wobble and Weave video
« on: May 16, 2016, 02:25:26 PM »
From the Wikipedia article, it looks like several design factors of tires and frames can improve the situation so modern tire technology and modern stiff frames probably help a lot:

Quote
Since shimmy frequency is independent of bike speed, gyroscopic effects "are clearly not essential to the phenomenon."[2] The top five influences on wobble have been found to be lateral stiffness of the front tire, steering damper, height of bike center of mass, distance of bike center of mass from rear wheel, and cornering stiffness of the front tire.[3][6]

An academic paper that investigated wobble through physical experimentation and computer modeling concludes: "the influence on wobble mode of front tire characteristics, front frame inertia and chassis stiffness were shown. In particular, it shows that [by] increasing front tire inflation, chassis stiffness, and front frame inertia about steering axis and decreasing sideslip stiffness of front tire, wobble mode damping is improved, promoting vehicle stability."[7]

And, to add to Ashveratu's comment - I get just as much utility from my Schuberth SRC and an automation app on my phone.  And it follows me from bike to bike...

Brammo Empulse / Re: Victory dealer feedback?
« on: February 28, 2016, 05:48:13 PM »
For my own experience, I need to find a dealer for two purposes and I'll update this thread with my experiences as I go.

First, I need a transmission oil change (which I could probably do on my own, but it will be a good chance to check out the local dealers).

Second, I've discovered that my handlebars are a little wonky after my spill last summer so I'll need to get the front suspension checked and replace the handlebar.  This will be a little tricky because the handlebar is one of those parts that was modified during the Brammo Empulse life cycle so it will be interesting to see if their new parts supply channel can keep up with these model differences.

I've contacted Spirit Motorcycles in San Jose because they aren't too far from where I visit my team for work in Santa Clara.  Their home page says that "Spirit Motorcycles is the core dealer in the country for Victory Empulse TT - Victory (sic) 1st electric bike".  OK, sounds promising, and they are open on Sundays (sales only) so I was able to talk to a salesman who mentioned that they've seen a couple of Brammos already and he seemed eager to provide good service for this new venture (being positive, but honest about what they've been able to accomplish so far).  He wants to get me on the phone with the owner and the Empulse mechanic to discuss the parts issue and scheduling for when they can get the parts and I can drop it off for service.  Sounds like we're off to a good start...

Brammo Empulse / Victory dealer feedback?
« on: February 28, 2016, 05:39:46 PM »
I wasn't sure where to start a thread like this, but I think it would be helpful if we started a feedback/advice thread on which Victory dealerships are up to speed and knowledgeable about maintaining Brammo bikes.  Feel free to move this thread to a better location if one exists.

The snopes article pretty much confirms what the article is saying with a lot more detail.  The issue is over whether race-only vehicles were ever exempt from emissions legislation and whether there is going to be any enforcement.

An interesting excerpt from the snopes article:
Quote
The EPA considers “emission control devices” to include the engine, the computer that runs the engine, the intake and the exhaust, so any changes to these components would be prohibited. The fact that the EPA says that they don’t plan on enforcing it does not change the fact that they are adding it to the regulations. SEMA also disagrees with the EPA’s position that this was already the law because the Clean Air Act, as written and amended by Congress, was never intended to extend to racing vehicles.

Pretty interesting that it includes the full engine and exhaust.  Noting that aftermarket exhausts on street vehicles is a big market, this interpretation has a lot larger scope than just race conversions.  Race conversions are at least not likely to see a lot of enforcement, but it could make any aftermarket exhaust illegal to sell...?

I don't race either, and I don't imagine that they only touch the chassis.

But, what I'm not clear on is if any of those engine modifications that aren't strictly related to removing or disabling the emissions controls would run afoul of the regulations.

Even street bikes do some of the things you mention without disabling the emissions controls.  The question is how far you can go and what is off the table when you can't get rid of the emission controls.

Also, I'll note that I haven't read the 600+ page document from the EPA, I'm just going on the summary in the article...
