A friend that I ride with, who lived in Germany at the time, just sent me this photo of him in 1957 mowing his parents lawn with a 1940's-era electric lawnmower. I thought it was kind of neat and looked like it would keep cutting for many more years. :)

MUST KEEP TRACK OF THE POSITION OF THE CORD!
(And this was before you could get orange extension cords).

First time I've seen a reel-type mower run by electric motor.
By the look on the young lad's face, it obvious that either a) he was forced to mow the lawn or b) he was determined to mow the lawn in a way that would almost certainly lead to his becoming a motorcycle rider later in life. :D

My friend said that he hated mowing the lawn. However, I would have loved to have a power mower to mow my parent's lawn. I used a push-mower to mow our lawn and I also had a little business mowing my neighbors' lawns for 25 cents each. My friend says that he never had a problem cutting the electrical cord. He said that the elevated location of the cord reel kept it away from the mower blades. :)

Also, Ryobi makes a battery-powered mower today. Uses, I think, a pair of their larger cells, not the 18v ones most of their handtools use.
