Fire sale!
« on: August 17, 2022, 10:14:06 PM »
Well, my Empulse is no more! While I was out of town, my bike "caught fire" and a neighbor was able to roll my bike out and dump it on my front lawn. Technically it was just smoking, but enough to alert the neighbor kids on a Sunday morning.

Keep in mind it was left off, unplugged, inside a cool and dry garage.

Not sure what will happen with my insurance but it may be up for grabs, hopefully as a whole unit real cheap.

Had 18,500 miles.

That was a problem with the 2012 Zero S and DS models. In 2017 Zero recalled their entire 2012 production of bikes because a few caught fire while being charged. At the time my daughter had my old 2012 S model and Zero came over to her home, picked up her bike (likely heading for the crusher) and gave her a check for $6,300. Zero claimed that the problem was caused by the battery manufacturer EIG and they claimed that the fires were caused by Zero's design or assembly. I don't know who ended up with the recall bill, but the following year Zero switched to a different battery manufacturer and completely redesigned their bikes. Since then I haven't heard anything about any more fires.

And of course the Chevy Bolt had a much more serious problem with random battery fires that were apparently caused by a defect in its battery pack. All of the affected cars were recalled and new batteries were installed at the battery manufacturer's cost. So these things can happen, but fortunately not very often.
current bikes: 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2007 BMW R1200R, 2005 Triumph T-100 Bonneville, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

Very sad news  :'(

Fortunately, no one was hurt, neither Victory nor the whole house burned down.

Can you write if the battery was charged to 100% before?

Do you have any photos?

I know of only one Victory that caught fire from the engine:

Some parts are now available on ebay:

I seem to be having trouble posting, so I'll try this. An ex Brammo employee said it sounded like a cell imbalance/defect, or, less likely, the bike got so discharged that something happened. It's also possible it could be something else too, but certainly it sounds like charging and/or temps are not an issue. Wonder if the USB recorded anything. Not sure who could analyze that.

Hi Fishfearme172,
may I ask what is the condition of your Victory Empulse that caught fire?
Do you have any spare parts for sale?
Greetings
Karel

Would like to part with them all for a very reasonable amount.
