Brammo Empulse / Re: Charger shows 0 Amps
« on: September 05, 2017, 02:26:25 AM »
I had the same problem once and solved it by reversing the AC mains plug in the wall outlet. Apparently it is also picky on which side the live wire sits. After that I simply put an indication mark on which way I had to plug into the wall.

Does it charge at a public charge station?

Excellent!
This makes us a little less dependent on Polaris

I was riding into work today on the freeway, about 60 mph in the left lane, when my Empulse just quit. First time that's happened at a decent SOC (80%). I was able to pull off onto the shoulder, recycle my power switch and startup, and proceed under power before rolling to a stop.

This experience sure made me ponder how I'm gonna get my bike fixed if something major goes out. I could always junk it (for those that want parts), and get a Zero. But I wonder if that outfit is going to be around for the long haul. Any opinions, Richards?

What is your charging behaviour, do you give the bike plenty of time to balance the battery?
If yes, then you may have a bad cell somewhere and that means it will probably get worse fast.
If not, leave the bike on charge for a few days and hopefully it will take care of an imbalance.

If you don't trust the bike anymore you could consider trading it in on the Energica Eva...

Where did you get the front sprocket?

For me Tapatalk is not working anymore on this forum.
Does anybody else have the same issue?

Good points!

I have wondered for a long time why there is no commute focused electric bike. Something like an electric Honda Deauville.

Because that's clearly the best application by far at this moment. The good sales of the electric BMW scooter in Europe proves it too. Pure commuter application clearly works. Don't forget that even Vectrix sold quite a lot of bikes in their short existence.

Reasons for my thoughts:
Who cares most about (avoiding) maintenance?
Who can live without slipping the clutch?
Who knows their range requirements best?
Who cares least about looks?
Who will love the perfect balance in narrow (city lane splitting) situations?
Who benefits most from time saving by avoiding the gas station?
Who will appreciate the full tank each morning (and evening when charging at work)?
Who doesn't want to wake up neighbours early in the morning.
Etc. Etc.

I'm convinced that if Honda would launch the E-Deauville it would quickly gain a lot of commuting fans.

Not so convinced that would work for an unknown brand like Zero but at this point in time Zero should start thinking about making a name in this niche market before the big boys do.

Victory Empulse / "RELEASE START" problem!?
« on: February 27, 2017, 01:50:07 PM »
I think only the Victory branded Empulses have these polite messages in the dashboard.

And yes, it will be moisture in the switch. But the 2014 and later bikes were already better protected with the new wiring than the older bikes. So only the switch and the dashboard are the weak spots of the bike related to water.

I used to ride in the rain daily without problems for over 2 years when I lived in the Netherlands.
I did occasionally have the start button problem but by blowing hard into the switch and pressing it quickly for a while always got me going.

I never took the switch apart or did anything to protect it either. (too lazy)

Did you use a pressure washer maybe? These are deadly for electric motorcycles so be warned...

Brammo Empulse / Sudden drop in State of Charge.
« on: February 25, 2017, 02:57:30 AM »
My guess is that your pack already has quite some cycles. The internal resistance will be a bit higher now. Combine this with the cold temperature of the pack and you will see significant voltage drop during WOT.
The BMS kicks in when a certain threshold is crossed and you are just reaching it earlier now.

I expect that the actual remaining SOC after such an event will still be around what was shown just before the drop. So my advice is to to memorise your average mileage per % of charge and use that to calculate roughly how far you can still travel.

The only thing I am not sure about is how Brammo programmed the battery degradation into the software; will a full charge stay 100% but with less mileage per charge or will your bottom charge %'s will become useless...

Brammo News And Views / Brian Wismann with Zero Motorcycles

But seriously this is good news for both Zero and Brian.
I wish them lots of success!

Brian was not afraid to go high voltage. I guess this topic will be part of a few discussions...
