Off Topic / Re: Anti-theft devices pros and cons
« on: January 30, 2015, 07:19:50 PM »
I feel quite lucky that over here in Germany insuring my bike (a Honda CBF 600, used, worth about 3500) against theft, vandalism, enviromental damage (small animals, storms and floods and stuff like that) costs me 16.81 Euro *per year*. But even if I would be sentimentally attached to this hunk of metal theft would be pretty much not exist.

Im ... somewhat astonished that a simple rule like "dont steal other peoples vehicles" is that hard to enforce somewhere else.

On the other side: Insuring my bicycle (which was a bit on the expensive side with a Rohloff hub gear and a handmade steel frame, all in all about 2.5k) would cost about 400 Euros per year :|
It seems to me that everything the police doesnt bother to investigate has quite a high number of real/faked thiefery attached to it and therefore almost insance insurance premiums.

well, abs for the rear is not a tiny little bit as important as abs to the front.

another note:
they seem to have kicked out the chademo charging posibility (before: 1800$ extra, but 30m charging) ...
sadly, chademo seems kind of dead except for japan.

yet another note: the stated carrying capacity is getting ridiculous. 147kg for the 15kwh-version ... that basically makes the existence of a second seat a marketing gag.
even the 185kg of the standard version are not quite a lot. It would already restrain the possible weight of a companion if both were wearing full gear by quite a bit.

jep, and an ABS :)

As the EU-Regulation concerning mandatory ABS is only for motorcycles with more than 125ccm (as that kind of classification has made any sense ever) Im quite happy that they didnt try to use the loophole.

Still, prices are completely fucking nuts. 20000 Euros (more than 25000 $)for the Zero SR with 15kwh battery pack.

well at the speed I'm cycling the red light seems to be rather green-blue ;)

Are you still guessing about the range? This (german) article says (and doesnt give sources) 240km (1), mentions that being a number quite  a bit ahead of the game. That translates to an estimatec 12-14kwh battery pack i think.

Im quite shocked about (the general) news - I first saw the pictures of the HDE on the avengers set and was pretty sure it was just a custom build for the set (I imagine taking a movie with the sound of a fucking HD in the background quite hard on the nerves).
Well, now the first big motorcycle company that claims building a electric streetbike (KTM just experimented with dirtbikes, BMWs thing I would consider more of a scooter) is Harley Davidson. The company best known for 1950s look with 1930s tech at ridiculous prices. I would have betted on hell freezing over anytime.

About the bike: I dont like the chromy underside and the ridiculous long wheelbase. Would choose Brammo anytime :D
But I never had a thing for cruisers (look-wise - I enjoy just driving miles of straight road with air in my face as much as anyone)

yes, the windmills/minute ratio ist much to high for germany, so obviously in the netherlands :D

kinda strange, because the numberplate is from altoetting which is 20km from the austrian border (thats exactly the opposite corner of germany)

« on: June 05, 2014, 02:16:34 PM »
Ahoi,

I just had a look at the TT Zero 2014 times, and, well, WTF?
Honda/Mugen with John McGuinness won with 117.366 mph (19' 17.300) which ist more than a minute faster than last year (20' 38.461). Delta mph are almost 8 which is the biggest step in the history of the TT Zero.

Has anyone found any articles / videos longer than a 3 lines? I more or less missed the whole event, dont even know which day it was.

« on: May 13, 2014, 03:39:29 PM »
In any case -- anybody had a serious scrape with accompanying gear recommendations and/or condemnations?

Jeah, I got hit by a car from the left (a bit less than 50 km/h) while driving at about 15 km/h forward about 2 months ago. Got hit pretty hard on my left leg and foot, but nothing broken, just very hard bruises (theyre still there and only slowly going away). Flipped twice and landed on my helmet, breaking it (actually the most expensive part of the accident safe of the car which has about 7000 Euro damage :D ).

Gear was some reasonably priced kevlar trousers and jacket, both undamaged, some acceptable gloves, some Shoei helmet for 400 bucks (Shoei Multitec I believe, but I wasnt that convinced. Will buy another one this time) and very very comfortable Dayona Burdit XCR (1). Man, those boots are awesome. Can recommend. Took the hit like a champ, protected reasonable well (it was a fucking 2 ton car driving its numberplate directly into my foot) and are that comfortable I actually wear them on bad weather days, too.

The motorcycle (Honda CBF 600 S/A) has a dent in the tank (proved to be softer than my knee), broken footpegs and minor parts and a bend bar, nothing else. About 150 bucks to repair plus value drop through scratches (which hurt the most because I actually wanted to sell it this fall and replace it with a KTM Duke 390).

Its not certain yet which fault it is - both sides could have prevented it if they were more careful, but both sides had the right to be there - very faulty shilds in a very very complicated place (3 meters away from Hitlers Reichsparteitagsgelaende actually). The insurances are fighting that one out.

while this is a nice bike and might hit an acceptable price very soon and is acceptable near to me (im in nuremberg, germany) im currently too broke - just had a crash last month which, well, crashed my motorcycle related budget too :D

I wish you best of luck selling. I would like to hear which price it got when you sold it, would that be ok?

Brammo Empulse / Re: size of solar cell
« on: April 15, 2014, 02:06:14 PM »
Last year a Dutch university team participated in (and won) the solar challenge "cruiser" category with a car that seated 4 persons and was powered by sunlight obviously.
Top speed with 4 passengers was around 120km/h (75mph) if I remember correctly.
Average speed during the 3000km challenge was 72km/h!
That car (named Stella) was made road legal in the Netherlands which is not easy...

Here is the link to the website: www.solarteameindhoven.nl/en/pages/car

Once you go EV, gas is history!

Wow, very cool! I didnt know there was still some active research in that area with that impressive results (well, Australian desert sounds a bit flatter and sunnier than the alps, but 70km/h crusing speed is quite nice indeed.).
I forgot to mention that my fathers efforts were late 80ies, early 90ies and therefore was restricted to lower-eff-solar-panels from that time (I think norm efficiency was about 14-16% at that time?).

Brammo Empulse / Re: size of solar cell

well, lower limit would be (perfect solar cells, on the equator at noon, perfect loading efficiency):  1.14 square meters.
http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%289.31kwh+%2F+6h%29+%2F+solar+constant

i dont really know what youre after:
a) a quick estimation based on power ? then about 10-15 m^2 which should be a reasonable sized roof (a rought estimation would be lower limit * 5 (cause of nonperfect panels with efficiency about 20%) * 1.3 (youre not living near the equator, are you?) * 1.4 (its not always noon) * 1.3 (loading / other electrical inefficiencies))

b) or a over-a-year-average-estimation based on energy (look at VYs post for that)?

a) gives you the sad insight that it would be very, very hard to achieve nice cruising speeds on a car by solar input alone, even with perfect conditions :|
my father once build an experimental leightweight aerodynamic vehicle for a contest going from munich to northern italy, but the average travel speed achieved by the winner was no higher than 40-50 km/h.

Off Topic / Re: GVWR explained
« on: March 01, 2014, 05:10:27 PM »
Lucklily this problems doesnt exist here, every vehicle has a precise leaflet with all the technical details with must be with the vehicle at all times (I assume in order to make the excuse "I didnt know I was overloading" invalid).
Therefore I know that my Honda CBF 600 has a 197kg (~435 lb) carrying capacity, about the same for the KTM Duke 390 I currently fancy.
While obviously higher than the capacity of the Zero or the Brammo it is still not a lot, I e.g. weight about 115kg with boots, helmet etc, which gives only 82kg for a fully protected passenger - not an awful lot, it keeps most of my male friends away and sometimes serves as a excuse to avoid carrying someone ;) . Keep in mind this is an explicit touring vehicle!
One wonders why the limit is so low. Is it the frame? The tires (which would explain the low general level on all known bikes)? The suspension (maybe fixable/modable)? The very conservative estimation by the manufacturer in order to avoid any problems and/or legal responsibility?

I would like to hear from Brian how they got their numbers for the GVWR of the Empulse. Is it a conservative educated guess? Were you limited by some bought subcomponent? I cant possibly imagine one would design a frame with such low carrying capacity in mind.

well, I sold mine at about 350% ... I couldnt stand the voices screaming "ooooooverpriced" in my head :D

now im (desperatly?) trying to get some shares again (at a decent price of course, not more than 100$), so I encourage you to hold them :)
the worst that could happen would be *less* profit, but still profit.

Hi Adan,

im currently working out how much importing and shipping (to germany) might cost me. It may be that I dont have to pay 19% Einfuhrumsatzsteuer (import sales tax?) due to the purely private nature of the sale. Im also unsure about the custom fees, quotes go from 0% (cause EV) to 8%(cause motorcycle with engine size <250ccm).

In the most positive case I might be very interested :)

Its not very probable though, therefore I wish the best of luck elsewhere. Price seems very reasonable to me.

EDIT: Typo

Brammo Empulse / Re: Endlich !!!! only german!

I can confirm the rumors... we're excited to get the Empulse to Europe, finally!

May I ask for some details? The Empule was afaik scheduled for May 2013, there were plenty of listed dealers.
Were there legal problems like getting certification/admission or lies the fault more in the supply chain / european assembly lines?

Although not entirely in Brammos interest I hope this step motivates ZeroMC to finally get their shit together for the european market and start selling them at more reasonable prices (not up to 1.4 times the US-price).
