Relaxed pace ride in the Santa Monica Mountains, stopped for lunch at Malibu Country Mart as they have a few chargers available and some great views.  Outside temperatures were in the low 60's.  Weather has not been cooperative lately and I had been itching to go for a ride, but have been off the bike for over a week and there had been rain in the canyons recently so we kept things nice and relaxed.  Roads ended up being very clean with only a few patches of dirt or rocks.

The video is of the Latigo Canyon portion of the ride.  I borrowed my wife's Garmin VIRB Elite so I could play with the GPS overlay.  The splice in the video toward the end is where we stopped to check on a couple of riders.  Two of them had gone down and while one of the bikes had extensive faring damage, the riders were not injured beyond a little bit of bruising.  One of the riders who had gone down was way more interested in talking about the Empulse and seemed to completely forget about his crash.

Brammo Empulse / D4 error
« on: February 19, 2016, 01:09:26 AM »
I was riding along Pacific Coast Highway last Thursday when I get a D4 error and lost power to the motor.  Restarting the bike did not help so contacted Brammo as to were to take the bike.  I initially got the OK for Hollywood Electrics to fix the bike  :) but that was short lived when I got the sad news from Harlen on Tuesday that it had to be sent to Victory for repair  :( .  About a month ago, I unsuccessfully tried to order a part through Victory and their dealers, but their parts distribution was not in place yet.  Fortunately I was able to get the part directly from Brammo at that time, but Brammo is no longer supporting the bike.

The Victory dealer was finally able to look at the bike today and realized they have no manual, training, or diagnostic tools yet.   :'(  I tried to explain to the person on the phone about getting the diagnostic files off the USB drive sent off, but I don't think I was able to convey the concept as this is likely very different from how diagnostics are done on their V twins.  Unfortunately they are 60 miles away so I cannot just stop buy and pull the log files, nor would that likely move things any faster anyway.

I will call Victory in the morning, they will ask for my serial number which was not in their system last month, and is likely not in their system this month.  I hope I am wrong, but I suspect this will be a long painful process involving many frustrating phone calls before I have a working bike again.   :'( :'( :'(

The moral of this story is don't let your bike have any problems for a few more months while Victory is still sorting things out.

Trip Reports / Long Beach and back, 165.5 miles.
« on: June 10, 2015, 05:16:26 PM »
The plan was to join a local sport bike group for a ride starting in Santa Monica, riding along the coast and ending in Long Beach.  I was then going to meet a guy in Long Beach to look at a Triumph ST to replace my aging and too small Honda VF500F.  The catch was the group was meeting Saturday morning at 9:30 and 50 miles from my home, creating some logistical considerations if I wanted to start the ride with a full battery.

Some overly conservative calculations concluded that 4 hours would provide more than sufficient time for travel and recharging back to full.  I planed to leave the house at 5 AM to make sure that I actually got out of the house by 5:30, it would be morning after all.  I was patching servers over the weekend so I ended up not getting to bed until midnight, clearly a flaw in my planning.

When 4 AM rolled around, I was awake but knew I was too tired.  My wife poked me and asked if I was awake, I said yes.  She poked me again (she is very helpful like that) and asked if I was going to get up and go on my ride.  I clearly responded "No dear, I am feeling too tired and don't think I should go on the group ride today."  According to my wife, what I actually said was closer to "gggrmmmppp knjhlksl tthpttmm Not Going mmmgt llhhhsl!" and promptly fell back asleep.  In any case, message conveyed.

This gave me a chance to get some more sleep, then spend the morning with my wife.  She needed to leave by 11 AM to get to work, so I decided to leave at the same time to head for Long Beach.  I packed up my laptop so I could do so work during my charging stops and headed out.

Since I had plenty of time to get to Long Beach, I opted for a leisurely ride through the Santa Monica mountains.  I arrived at the Malibu Country Mart (which has 3 charging stations) at 53% State of Charge (SoC) with 40 miles on the trip meter.  I plugged in my bike next to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and spend a few minutes talking to people about the bike, then the next hour enjoying my coffee while getting some work done.  One hour and 19 minutes later, I was on my way with a 91% SoC.

Next stop, Hermosa Beach Pier for lunch.  I had researched the location based on the group ride, so knew of a couple of charging stations in that area.  Traffic was pretty heavy, particularly down Lincoln Blvd.  It was really nice to be on a motorcycle allowing me to filter to the front at stop lights, then enjoy the next 2 or 3 blocks traffic free until I caught up to the next batch of cars.  The 2 charging stations on the street near the pier were occupied, but one was open a block or so away at City Hall.  Having used 26% of my battery to get the 29 miles, I would later calculate a maximum range of almost 112 miles in those conditions.  A traffic cop saw me pull in and came over to chat, having never seen or heard of an electric motorcycle before.  I had a message from the guy I was meeting about the triumph, he was ready for me to come by earlier than he expected.  I had planned on getting lunch by the pier, but 13 minutes of charging later, I was up to 72% and on my way again.  I had gotten the address, texted my wife the location, got it programmed into my phone.

I am still getting used to using my phone as a GPS, so it keep wanting to take me on the freeway, I finally gave in as I really did not know where the GPS was taking me.  I should have spent more time getting an overview of where I was going.  I was thinking of down town Long Beach, but the GPS was going a different way and really wanted me to use the freeway.  I saw the Triumph and liked the bike so I made an offer, there are some details to work out so I don't know if my offer will be accepted or not yet.  I had 46% SoC so decided I could make it to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica for dinner and a bit of charging before I went home.

When I got the the parking structure, there was an attendant pulling tickets for people to get them through faster as it was backed up into the street.  He waived me into the motorcycle parking area, but did not give me a ticket.  I got off the bike and told him I needed to charge, he said there were some on the other side of the wall.  I found an open one on the next level up.  The bike was now showing 17% SoC with 115 miles on the trip meter for the day.  I checked on the bike after I had dinner at it was at 50% SoC after 70 minutes of charging, then went to find coffee and a WiFi signal.

I had gotten a bit distracted doing some work so by the time I got back the the bike, it had been charging for 3 hours and 16 minutes and was now fully charged.  I had not been in a hurry as my wife was at work and I was not expecting to be charged for parking.  Surprise, parking for motorcycles was NOT free.  When I did not get a ticket from the attendant, I expected to pull around the arm as is done at LAX.  This arm would have been difficult to get around so I pushed the tell the attendant I was on a motorcycle.  Apparently this did not matter.  I explained the situation and told him what time I entered so $4 popped up on the display, I put in my credit card and went away slightly more educated.

Traffic was pretty calm by this time 9:30 so I just went the speed limit which was 45 for a bit, then 50, and finally 55 for the majority of the trip home.  It was largely uneventful and I arrived home with 165.5 miles on the trip meter with a 34% SoC.

I had not utilized 2 of the 3 charging locations before, but had a backup plan in case things did not work out.  I did not find the actual trip stressful at all which was largely due to not having many time constraints.  I was surprised at how much interest others had in the bike that day, few seem to take much notice in the area I live, but I had people asking me about the bike every time I stopped as well as a couple of people stopped next to me at lights.

In conclusion, I had gone 165.5 miles and used the equivalent of 200% of my batteries capacity.  I had spent a total of 4 hours 48 minutes charging, though I would have been comfortable heading for home with an hour less charging at my last stop.  The range I calculated seems pretty consistent with the numbers published by Brammo.  Temperature was in the high 60's when I left, mid 70's during the day, and 60 degree's when I arrived at home.  It seems the Brammo is pretty well balanced charging wise.  The slower you go, the more time you spend on the bike and less time charging, but it still takes the about the same amount of time overall.  This is assuming that L2 charge stations are plentiful and easily accessible.  A more powerful on board charger would tip the balance towards riding faster.

Brammo Empulse Mods / Stash tube for registration and insurance
« on: April 08, 2015, 04:08:17 PM »
After a bit of searching to find a place to store a copy of my registration and insurance on the motorcycle, I ran across this stash tube that mounts to the license plate bracket. http://www.ebay.com/itm/registration-holder-stash-tube-Harley-Honda-Kawasaki-all-motorcycles-/161298893179?hash=item258e29c97b  I ordered the one with the black tube and red reflectors and when mounted it behind the license plate, it is pretty discrete and blends in well with the bike.  I don't think it would be noticed if you were not specifically looking for it.

The reflector bolts should be at least 1/4" longer, as is, I needed to eliminate the included washers to get it to fit.  I may replace them with standard bolts that match the others holding the license plate on.  In any case, it lets me keep an extra copy of my paperwork on the bike that I can still get too when needed.  There is not a lot of room in the tube, but it does what I needed and was under $10 shipped.

Brammo Empulse / Can the speedometer be calibrated?
« on: March 31, 2015, 03:02:14 PM »
Is there a way to calibrate the speedometer?  Mine seems to read about 5% higher than my speed according to all of the radar based indicators I have passed through.  While this is not the end of the world, if I can make it more accurate, I would like too.

I see that the speed sensor reads off the rear wheel, and while installing a larger rear tire might be an option once my current one wears out, I have to think the tires that came on the bike were chosen for a reason.

Trip Reports / California State Route 150 on a Empulse R.
« on: March 29, 2015, 12:25:50 AM »
I had a great ride on my Empluse today.  Started  my meeting my wife for lunch as she was working, then onto Ventura to meet a friend I have not seen for about 6 months and go for a ride.  I planed to arrive a bit early and top of my charge.  I arrived at one of the public chargers off Main Street with 73%  SoC having traveled just over 21 miles.  Display indicated 0:56 to full charge which was perfect as it was 1 hour before our scheduled meeting time.

My friend arrived a bit late as he was not familiar with this part of Ventura and got a bit lost.  I had brought some paperwork to read so this was not a big deal. Got to the bike which was now fully charged and $0.73 charged to my ChargePoint card.  I figured that I could probably make it to Ojia then take the 150 to Santa Paula and still make it home.  Anyway after a brief discussion, we decided to take Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) to where the 150 starts then stop for coffee in Ojia for at least an hour so I could charge.

I was hoping to go a bit slower on PCH to conserve my battery a bit, but 70 mph seemed to be the speed he wanted to go so I tried my best to keep my head out of the wind and watched my battery drain to 75% in those 15 mile.  I had never ridden this part of the 150 so wanted to take it pretty easy as I just had my front tire replaced yesterday (Continental Recall).  He let me pass after we turned onto the 150 and I set a nice relaxed pace of 45-50 mph.  The Sun was shining, the road was is good shape with only 1 spot where some small rocks had fallen onto the road.  The scenery was fantastic  finishing up with the section that goes along the lake.

Arrived at the Park-N-Ride in Ojia with 50% SoC.  Neither charging station was being used but there was a Chevy picking ICEing one of the spots.  I was expecting these to both be occupied so I was happy I did not have to fall back to the ones at City Hall which have always been open on the weekends.  Display indicated 1:56 until full charge.

We had a nice chat over coffee and my Empulse was at 98% when we go back after an indeterminate amount of time.  I thought this was a good time to let my friend try out the Empluse.  After a quick briefing including not needing the clutch to start, he took a quick spin around the parking lot then I showed him how to toggle Sport mode on and off and sent him off for a short ride.  Yep, he used the clutch when he started off from the first stoplight.  Wow does that sound horrible when the clutch is being slipped.  As an observer, I could also here the chain which I can't when I am riding the bike.

I was at 95% SoC when we left the Park and Ride and I would have been happy at anything over 75%.  Having broken in my new tire a bit, with plenty of battery left, and on a road I have at least driven before, we picked up the pace a little bit and continued on the 150 to Santa Paula completing its entire length.  We then took South Mountain Road towards Fillmore for some nice gentle sweeping curves.  When we got the Highway 23, we said goodbye and my friend turned North towards Fillmore and I when South up Grimes Canyon for some more twisties.

I had plenty of battery left so I took the more scenic route utilizing Broadway, Stockton, Balcom Canyon Road, and Bradley on my way to Somis before heading for home.

I arrived home with 28% SoC and 116.3 miles on the trip meter, the Kings game recording on the TiVo, and my hound dog super happy to have me home.  Overall, a pretty fantastic day!  Go Kings Go!

Things I learned today: California State Route 150 is why I love motorcycles and dead bugs show up really well on white leather.

Brammo Empulse / Minor glitch
« on: March 20, 2015, 03:11:07 PM »
Today when I started my Empulse R, the tack needle did its thing but the green lights indicating it was live never started to flash.  I made sure the bike was stationary, but still nothing.  I held the start button for a few seconds expecting maybe it did not "start" or that it would change modes, but still nothing.  After a couple attempts at the start button, I toggled the red kill switch then tried to restart which worked as expected.  The bike performed as expected on my ride into work.

Firmware 2.07 was installed last week.  Hopefully an isolated issue, but I wanted to make sure it got documented.

Brammo Empulse / My longest trip and deepest discharge so far.
« on: March 14, 2015, 03:11:51 PM »
Yesterday I put 116.4 miles on the Brammo according to the trip meter.  I encountered a very strong headwind for my last 25 miles on a road that I did not feel comfortable at less that 50 mph on.  I learned that the battery icon starts flashing at 20%, then the green lights above the dash start flashing at 10%.  I was still about 5 miles from home when I got down to 7% so I stopped at a public charging station for about 20 minutes before continuing home.  I noticed the charger was only showing +2.3 kw, possibly due to the temperature of the batteries which were in the low 90's Fahrenheit and it was a unseasonably warm day.

Laying down on the "tank" make a huge improvement in power usage, but I was still drawing over 7 kw to maintain 50 in the windy section.  This also made it harder to read my gauges and check my mirrors.  I may have to look into getting a windscreen in the future.

Brammo Empulse / Firmware 2.07
« on: March 14, 2015, 02:44:14 PM »
I had my bike at Hollywood Electrics yesterday to have the recall fix implemented.  While I was there, Harlan said a new firmware was just released and asked if I wanted it installed now so I did not have to make another trip later.

I am not sure of the differences but the version on the dash now shows 2.07.  Harlan said this was to address the throttle glitch, which I have fortunately never noticed.
