At least you posted in the "Off Topic" section  ;)

Zero has some powertrain solutions, pretty much based off of their current offerings, not sure how they're priced though: http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/powertrains/

Anyone know if the dealers are going to try to charge any dealer fees?

Depends entirely upon the dealer. Most motorcycle dealers here apply the FRT/PDI and a "documentation" or "administration" fee. Most, except for one, who charges no FRT/PDI, no other fees, and this dealer applies manufacturer discounts before the others get around to it.

The dealer that I bought my Zero from charged the "Zero approved" FRT/PDI fees, but then they delivered the bike 4-hour round trip at no extra charge; I assume there's more than enough profit on the bike sale and FRT/PDI that they had no problem doing that.

My Gloves: Icon Pursuit

Is this turning into a gear thread?  ???

I don't actually believe that we can purchase motorcycle related gear up here for cheaper than in the USA. Mind you, it's one set of gloves, and only $6.54 CAD cheaper, but still  ;D  Except for when they're on sale I suppose  :-[

I've got those gloves, here's my jacket:

In Canada if you take your motorcycle road test on anything that doesn't have a clutch you get an "S" restriction. Meaning that you have your motorcycle license but only on vehicles that don't have a clutch.

Simply not true. In Canada licensing is done on a provincial basis.

In Ontario we have M1, M2 and M (graduated licensing, certain restrictions on M1/M2, M is a free-for-all), and for "limited speed" motorcycles ("a motorcycle that has a maximum speed of 70 km/h") there is an additional "L" condition added onto the M designation.

In Quebec they have Class 6R, 6A, 6B and 6C for motorcycles. For mopeds, low-speed motorcycles and bikes with engines smaller than 50cc there's the 6D license.

Proto: Thanks for the info about the pack. Charging at work is not an option, I was planning to charge a bit on the ride home from work with the two chargers.

BF: You don't know how glad I am that it turned out ok!  :D I had visions of myself pushing the bike along the side of the road or sidewalk  :-[

I'm a fan of The Walking Dead. Season One was good, the first episode got me hooked. Brammofan is right, middle of Season Two is slow, then towards the end it picks up nicely. I think there were either different directors or writers for the two halves, maybe both. Wiki shows Frank Darabont as no longer being the "showrunner"...

Yet another update: I did not receive the quick charge harness with the quick charge option to allow two inputs into the battery pack from two chargers, so I've been putting off riding the XU to work. My plan was to quick charge at an intermediate location on the return portion of my commute. Zero is working out where it is and getting it shipped to me. Today I decided to do it anyways, and I was resigned to the fact that I might have to "slow charge" at the intermediate point.

When I arrived at work there was 5 bars showing on the "fuel gauge", and I thought "maybe I'll make it home"  :). The ride in was at about 13*C.

When I turned on the bike in the afternoon, temperature now 28*C, there were 6 bars showing on the gauge. I managed about 1.7 KM before the gauge dropped back down to 5 bars. Then I managed to make it home, the last 1 KM or so with the two bars flashing warning. The commute home was slower, traffic congestion is a bit higher, so I'm guessing that's a good thing  :D

Google Maps shows the round-trip as 46.6 KM, the XU odometer shows it as 48.6 KM, either way I got home  ;D  Hopefully the battery pack is okay with the two bars flashing. I also have to verify with a GPS about the distance, and see about reconfiguring the wheel diameter setting on the instrument cluster to try to get the odometer a bit more accurate (protomech posted the cluster manual, thanks!).

3. What the heck is that thing, on the right? (13:03)

The red bike looks like a CBR250R. The beige/sand coloured thing looks like a test mule dirt bike (Engage MX). The unknown white faired bike is an Empulse with a fairing (just because it looks like the same gold forks as on the next two Empulses), two Empulses and then an Enertia.

Would it make sense to start a "fuel economy thread"? Or does one already exist? I've seen three online docs so far:

Brammo Efficiency

Protomech's Zero S Energy Usage

CliC's Zero DS Ride Log

craigq's 2012 Zero XU Log

My only slight reservation are the hotel stays...will the bike be safe on the truck or should I bring it into the motel room at night.

Have fun at Laguna! If it were me I would take the bike inside.   ;)

Last update in the registration process: notified today by the MTO that I can register the bike. Got the paperwork and plates.

Went for a 33km ride around the neighbourhood. I think I have an idea of how you all feel now.

Initial impressions:

As already reported, ECO vs SPORT (or on my XU I vs II) provides quite the difference in riding experience, both in acceleration and regen braking. In ECO the regen feels a lot like engine braking on a small displacement 4T; it's barely noticeable in SPORT mode. In ECO mode if one times it correctly one can use minimal brakes to come to a stop (applying a little bit of pressure to at least get the brake light activated). The only issue is in ECO mode you really have to pay attention (more so than normal on a motorcycle) to traffic patterns and almost anticipating traffic light changes.

It gets up to 60 & 80KPH quickly enough that commuting shouldn't be a problem. The XU is light and flickable, the front brake seemed spongy/squishy at the beginning but it seems to be getting better.  Rear brake takes a while to bite, I like using it for low-speed parking lot speeds so I'll have to see if I can adjust that. The seat height is about 5.5" shorter than my WRR, so that took some time for adjustment. I only reached for the non-existant clutch and gear shifter once, while coming to a stop  ;D
