just a start...should be able to easily do a couple of posts a week as I don't plan to be anything but "photoy" and glib...and photos and glib talk is kinda easy for me.

Kick ass post Gavin! Kinda surprised no one has given you shit about plugging in... I imagine they probably appreciate the fact that you ask before plugging in. The days of available public sockets may be coming to an end though, the more EVs that hit the road. There will certainly be some assholes that will plugin wherever they please and ruin it for the rest of us...

Thanks guys....or should I say TEAM :)

EB, it's crazy...nobody seems to care...except the ones who care in a good way, as in they want to help me find a place to plug in...

yes, I imagine it will change some as more Electrics are on the road...right now it is a bit of a novelty....but I still bet any business will be happy to let me charge if I'm buying from them...especially when they hear how cheap it is...which is my next blog...:)

I view local charging, especially off of 110v, as more of a courtesy item.

It doesn't cost the company much to provide wifi access to paying customers. It's a goodwill gesture that can encourage repeat business.

Likewise, an hour of charging at 110v on an Enertia or Empulse costs the company a few pennies. But you can bet I'll be back, especially if you're on a route I frequently travel and need to charge at.

Of course, there's a concern in both cases that freeloaders could steal your precious internet / electrons. In practice the time and expense spent discouraging doing so generally ends up being more harmful than the actual freeloading.

We had a discussion here and another one at elmoto.net about guerrilla charging and it seems to be pretty much like that all over the place. I have asked around here and no one so far even thought about it twice.

Actually, Gavin's post can be a very good source to dispel a lot of range anxiety issues. Just by the narrative, you can see that charging the bike can actually be a great part of the trip. I will definitely be sending people to check Gavin's blog.

Also, that was how I started to plan the documentary I wanted to do riding the Empulse across the U.S. By charging the bike at motels, BBs, restaurants, etc. I could take the time to talk to people about local food and culture and, at the same time, show off the bike and talk about elmotos. The trip itself would work to get many people encouraged to see that, with proper planning, you can take your electric on a long trip. You just need to enjoy your food and the company a little longer...  ;)

thanks Ninja....yeah, I just view it as "relaxed" travel.

1) no worries on commutes or around town. plenty of juice for that, and if I do ride longer than I thought, well plugs are everywhere....

2) longer trips just mean a bit more prep in the beginning and a bit more and longer stops.
the prep: I tend to call ahead to make sure I can charge either at my destination or nearby...people to love to talk about the bike, both in person and over the phone.

more and longer stops is pretty self explanatory...I do take my phone with books and such on it, and surf the web some...but usually I'll have multiple people who come up and ask me about the bike....that is my third blog for next monday :)

make no mistake, I do want more range...even with the plus I will WANT more...but the Plus will be better for my slightly longer rides, even if she won't be able to do my really long and insane rides easily :)

'“Hmmmm, buy needed medication or fill the gas tank?”'
LOL, what kind of meds are we talking about Gavin?

"I love this photo as it make me think of riding the Enertia through the world of Fallout 3"
Anyone who has played this game will know exactly what you are talking about. Its a great game btw...

"And it is because electricity is so much cheaper than gas (and can be renewable and clean—Wind, solar, hydro, tidal, geothermal—Mother Nature is very giving."
That's the cool thing about EVs... they can run on ANYTHING. Also, you can put solar panels on your roof, but you cant drill and refine your own petrol out of your back yard.

Great post with good humor thrown in as usual.

eBrammoHarmony - where we go to be teased by Brammo. Sweet promises of bikes .. only when we meet them in real life (shipping this month, yes?) .. they've put on a few pounds and a few dollars.

LOLZ. We can all get along here... until someone buys a Zero. :P JK. I think most of us like Zero's too, myself included. Just like Brammo's a little more.

@Proto... they only really need to ship one! I will even take the one we saw with dynamite strapped to it.

Well I can't crunch numbers nor build better batteries...I can put words together in mildly amusing ways...

But as meatloaf sang, 1 out of 3 ain't good...or something similar.

Bicycle helmet probably would be fine for your niece if she's only riding for the parade. Not exactly a high-risk environment ... unless you're in the crowd getting beaned with candy.

Feels like I should be eating oreos while reading the post ; 0

Breaking Bad season 5 starts up soon. I missed season 4, maybe I will catch up..

Works on both my computers with firefox, Chrome, and IE8.

This video reminds me of how much more I need to pay attention to traffic while riding instead of looking around or being distracted.  I kept thinking while watching this "what's going on in front down the road?"  It's amazing how much road goes by that isn't captured on video.  (not a lecture, just my own personal wake-up-call to myself.)

Ha...funny enough, I was just at your blog yesterday and reading through the posts...and I was thinking, "dang, his blog is NICE...lots of info, well done, much more "professional" than mine with much more Brammo information..." and was thinking, what do i do to keep up with EB :)

mine is more personal and photo filled...but I was thinking I should add some "brammo news"...but then I thought, nahhh, EB has that covered...I'll keep to the wackier side of brammo blogging.

I think probably having both types is good...

The blog should have some nice photos and video up on Monday....if the weather is nice...I hope.

Son-in-law and I are heading up to Silverton and Durango, Colorado. Trucking the bikes up (Enertia for me, Yamaha Zuma 125 for him) and will do some riding around.

I've been chatting with the PR people at Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and they are helping me to get a few photo ops of the Steam Locomotive and the Enertia together...so that should be nice. Old meets new and all that.

Plus a few other fun locations...again, please minimal rain (though I know Colorado needs it).

I've been pretty lucky...every place I've called has not only been open to the idea of having the Enertia hanging around and being photographed, but often they are actively helping me...perhaps they sense I'm a noobie at this...or it is my natural charm :)

If, 25 years ago, I had gone into PR vs medicine, by now I would rule the world...eh, possibly a slight exaggeration.

But it has been fun...and like Blanche Dubois, I have always counted on the kindness of strangers...which could explain those lost years I had as a child...

I will say writing the blog is pretty fun...and taking the photos is crazy fun.

I am so glad I bought the pick up truck...I never thought of myself as a pick up guy, but now I have sooooo many more places I can go with the Enertia.

Gavin:  could you link directly to the post, rather than to your blog's main page?  I.e., this post is at:
http://brammoblog.com/2012/07/10/brammo-blog-ride-an-electric-motorcycle-and-be-treated-like-a-god-part-%CE%B2/ (http://brammoblog.com/2012/07/10/brammo-blog-ride-an-electric-motorcycle-and-be-treated-like-a-god-part-%CE%B2/)
If you don't like the longish URL, you can use that "Insert Hyperlink" button.  What I usually do is copy/paste the title of the post or article, then copy the link, highlight the title, press the "Insert Hyperlink" button, and paste the URL into the box.

The best reason to do this? So that when I go back on the forum to see something you've indicated is "Number 12", it doesn't take me to your most current post (e.g. "Number 157") instead of good ol' Number 12.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming. ;)

Todays blog will be a bit late, so you can read it at home and get it the same time as everybody else...and everybody else is my MOM.

I'm in Gallup, NM at outreach clinic and won't be home till 6 or so to work on it...luckily I have all the images done, just need to dream up some witty repartie...so maybe by midnight :)

I really enjoyed reading this one.

You have an iPhone, right?  Any chance you might do some live videocasting?  Check out this page:
http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/live-broadcasting (http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/live-broadcasting)

The UStream app seems like a possibility.

I don't think the google + app for the iphone lets you do a google hangout...THAT would be very cool.

Cool.  It looks like he can JOIN a hangout already in progress, but can't necessarily initiate one. Which is fine.  Are you listening, Gavin?

We should set up a time for a Brammoforum Google Hangout and have Gavin join in from Seca.  HOWEVER, if I recall correctly, the 3g speeds were not very good last year and you had to be a VIP to get wifi access.  I could maybe get a wifi password from the TTXGP folks, if the Brammo people don't have one.

I agree, I think we will see a TTX racing at Miller : )

Better even than that would be customer bikes shipping. But a TTX racing would be very good.

Hey, Gavin. Thanks for the excellent blog. Reading it is the next best thing to going there myself. (Even better in some ways, 'cause I don't have to get cold and wet. :P)

There's something that I don't understand about your trip to Laguna Seca. For some reason, I got the idea in my head that part of the reason for your trip was to return the Enertia that Brammo had lent you. Or perhaps exchange it for a Plus once you got there.

It appears that you came back with the same bike that you got there with.

So what's the deal that you have with Brammo? Have they extended the "3rd party testing" with you? Do you hold on to the Enertia Classic until the Plus is ready and then swap? Are you allowed talk about it?
Title: Re: My BrammoBlog....
Post by: Gavin on August 04, 2012, 02:29:01 PM
Well I'm not a Brammo employee and I haven't signed any NDA...so I feel I can talk about anything...

Of course it would be silly to piss off Brammo :)

I went to Laguna Seca hoping to either bring back my Plus...or maybe an Empulse IF I was the BrammoEvangelista...figure I have a 30 percent chance of that...(edit: i thought I had zero chance as I figured BrammoFan would win it again for all his work...but they don't want repeat winners...so my chances grew somewhat)

But: a) Brammo did not have my plus and B) Brammo did not announce the Evangelista at Seca (likely Miller? And if revealed at Miller, well my chances go way down and a certain somebody who will be at Miller, well I imagine his chances go way up :) ).

So...nobody asked for the loaner back (edit. Adrian made a comment about putting the Green Enertia on the Truck before they left, but nobody went to do it...so I'm keeping it a while longer....leaving it with them actually makes lots of sense...at the same time, they were leaving from Seca and I had no way back to my Motel in Salinas if they took the Enertia with them), and I still had some photos and video I wanted to do (edit: and I'm glad I kept it as Vegas at Dusk and the Hoover Dam the next day are some of my favortie photos...and I would have missed those had I left the E with them)...so the loaner came back to New Mexico with me.

It I had been smarter, I would have asked if Brammo would take back the Green Classic and let me ride the black engineering bike (a true plus) until the Pluses come in...

But smart ain't my strong point.

I did let Brammo know that I would be happy to be a Beta Tester for any and all of their bikes.

They know I: will put many miles on them in all weather and conditions, will take tons of photos and such, will talk endless to people about them and will write and post a lot. (edit: the downside for Brammo is that I would be a Beta Tester many many many miles away from Ashland.)

We will see where it all goes from here.

I just learned layers (can you believe it) and this was my first try at it.

my niece was here for a couple of weeks this summer (she was the one who went on the Pride Parade ride on the back of the Enertia) and she showed me how to when she saw me "working" on a photoshop one time...she was, "what are you doing? Why aren't you using layers?" "I only use erase and clone and cut and paste," I admitted with great shame. I really need to take a class or two one day.

I am horrid at layers still, but it helps to "curve" bits here and there.

Very nice. Especially Rebirth ; )

Actually I do not like the Enertia name. Inertia is what the existing gas motorcycle industry has. Little new or different. Coasting along largely on 20 year old designs with fresh lipstick. Of course all moving things have some amount of inertia but large ponderous objects with little control over their direction are dominated by their inertia.

Perhaps Enertia = Ending Inertia.

With a lot of extrapolation, I saw energy consumption consistent with a 150-160 mile (47 Wh/mile) range on the ZF9 at 20 mph. 5000 mile ascent will use around (http://www.google.com/search?q=520+pounds+*+5000+feet+%2F+0.75+in+kWh) 1.3 kWh (assuming 75% total powertrain efficiency), leaving you with 49 Wh/mile to cover the 100 miles.

Truth be told, I have never been too partial toward the name, "Enertia," for the very reasons you stated, protomech.  "Encite" is another dud, as far as I'm concerned.  Sounds too close to a certain fake male enhancement product.  :-\

Yeah, Empulse and Engage are my favorites... I kinda like Enertia, though I havent really looked into the meaning of the word from which it was derived that much. Encite, not as much, but I dont dislike the name.

I hate to admit how much I ride with one hand...too often with no hands.

I didn't realize just how much I did it till I watched the videos...every video has me riding at least some with one hand.

On the other hand...in the last 7 years (i was late to the motorcycle life) and 30k miles on motorcycles, zero....well I won't finish that sentence as I am weird like that...

Try and contain your grief: There will be NO Blognesday this week.

Work = Crazytown...12 hour days all week.

I might get a short Blogursday in tomorrow...but no promises.

Friday is date night (The Lion King at Popejoy Theater)...so nada then either.

but I have a fun weekend of travel coming up...hoping to have some great photo ops that I can share with you all. It will be a geeky/nerd weekend for sure.

Nice...

the fun part was my paranoia....Brammo let me know they wanted the Plus back the same week EB was named Brammo Evangelist...So a very very small part of me wondered if I had done something wrong...vs Brammo just needing the bike back.

Of course, that coupled with the fact that Adrian won't return my emails....kidding...Mr Stewart is still kind to me for some unknown reason....

This surprises me. No word on another test bike though? Was thinking a test Empulse, but deliveries are just about to start... maybe an Engage? They really need to get you on another Brammo dude.
Title: Re: My BrammoBlog....
Post by: Gavin on October 31, 2012, 05:13:29 PM
Thanks :)

I would LOVE a test Empulse...especially as it is the bike Brammo is pushing for the US market...

But A) I don't think I would/should get one before the Evangelist...and B) Brammo has none to spare...

understandable...they want to get them to dealers and early pre order people...and maybe a celebrity or two...

An Engage would rock also...but I would love to ride and show off Brammo's Halo bike, the Empulse.

I think I will see T'Challa back instead...and that is great as I love her...but wouldn't mind trying Brammo's other offerings too...

Or Brammo could just cut off all communication with me...after watching my dancing panda I wouldn't blame them at all...

Perhaps this marks the transition to where they're starting to sell the bikes .. and you'll have an Empulse or an Enertia Plus of your very own to ride around on soon.

Have you decided which? Obviously you have a very good feel for the Enertia Plus .. would you spend an extra $6000 for the Empulse? What would lead you to choose one vs the other?
Title: Re: My BrammoBlog....
Post by: Gavin on October 31, 2012, 05:43:22 PM
Well....

I love the Plus and she works great for me as a daily rider.

I do think the Empulse would also work great for me as a daily rider. One upside of the Empulse is the 2 seats...I don't ride a lot with my wife, but some...If I get a Plus (not a loaner) I will probably redo the whole seat into a bench seat. It will take a bit of work, but I think I can pull it off.

Partly I just don't know as I have never driven the Empulse....I did sit on one and she had a great feel...but until you take it down the road at 65 mph you just don't know.

But I know and love the ride of the Enertia. So....

In conclusion...I don't know. 6k is a lot of money. At the same time, riding with the wife is nice.

We will see...I "think" Brammo will lend me T'Challa again...or sell me something (probably a better business plan :) )

Since they are not "giving" away two bikes this year, I could buy a Plus and hope for a R next year...but I think TTXGPfan, and his great site, might jump ahead of me on the Evangelist scale....I keep hoping they give him a job so he is no longer any competition :)

WARNING TO GAVIN -

If you truly value the money in your bank account, under no circumstances should you test ride the Empulse!

Having recently done so, I can tell you it has a lot more going on than being able to ride with your wife, or even my wife for that matter. It truly is more than the sum of its parts, and its parts are pretty darned fine.

This machine is a gentle, refined, beast of a real motorcycle, one that even Hunter Thompson would have swooned over, a machine that has already forced my wallet to succumb to a serious diet plan.

Who needs food anyway?

You have been warned...
Title: Re: My BrammoBlog....
Post by: Gavin on November 01, 2012, 10:14:07 AM
Yes :)

Some points:

1) I love the Enertia Plus. I think it is an amazing city commuter. I have said over and over that the Enertia Plus will sell tons in Europe and Asia. Europe is perfect for the Plus...and vice-versa.

2) Everybody thinks of me as the Enertia guy...and in many ways I am. I really like the style compared to the other electrics out there...simple and clean. It rides great. Looks great. Works great. And I don't usually like the sports bike look.

3) I liked the original Empulse, but didn't love its look. The newer Empulse is a great improvement to me (wonderful job Greg...especially that beautiful backside). And seeing it in person...dang that thing is tight. Adrian taunted me that I was flirting with the Empulse all weekend at SECA and that the Enertia would be jealous. He wasn't wrong. :)

4) Basically Brammo did a GREAT job on the Enertia. It was and is a great machine. Saying that, Brammo took the knowledge from building the Enertia and also the knowledge from racing and made the Empulse. It too is a great machine and really is Brammo's top machine, using all their expertise learned to date. It is their HALO machine. I would be negligent not giving it a ride before making my decision.

5) There is a good chance I will give it a ride and never look back :). At the same time, I may find that I prefer the weight, the balance, the ride of the Enertia Plus. I do know one person who has ridden both and prefers the ride of the Enertia.

6) Money is a bit of a factor, but not overwhelming. I did just buy new windows for my daughter's house (such an amazing improvement) and I bought a pickup truck just for the Brammo bike. So I am a bit tapped out at the moment. But money always finds a way (my wife HATES when I say that...but it has played out ok for me so far...especially with how life was as a kid...food stamps for sure, maybe welfare? Not sure about welfare as I was a kid and didn't handle the checks coming in, but I remember the food stamps...Mother would give me some to go shopping or get food and I would pretend to buy stuff with them and throw them out and use my work money as I was embarrassed to be poor...I was a stupid kid...but I started working to make money very early...shining shoes at 7 years old...newspaper route after that...lied about my age to take the lifeguard test at 14 years old...lied again to get a job as a lifeguard at 15 (you had to be at least 16 or older). I've worked just about everyday of my life since 7 years old...of course I am horrible with money...I believe it is to be spent freely...but enough of that....)

7) now if the rumors are true that Brammo might be giving the 2013 Evangelist an Empulse RR replica next year (basically an R with fairing) I will likely tattoo Brammo on my ever expanding forehead in bright neon green ink and do really excessive "whoring-out" of myself...shame will come later...but dang what an amazing prize that would be...

8) There is no 8

I've never ridden an Enertia, so I cannot compare, but with the Empulse, be prepared to get a kick in the pants when you twist that throttle! However, after that spanking you're probably going to hear yourself saying:

"Thank you sir, may I have another."  ;D

I think that I've felt about the same acceleration as with one of those horizontal take off roller-coasters, and I wasn't even in Sport mode!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the bike.

So:

1) lane split mirrors and new bar ends (heck I could go all MOD and keep the original mirrors and the bar end mirrors too :) )

2) will be tail tidy.

3) will be??? Maybe the seat mod to make it like the TTX...

Looks like the high temps really helped your range.

On the trip down, my calculations show that you achieved 81.8% of a mile per 1% of battery charge used. (I.e. predicted range of 81.8 miles using 100% of the battery)

On the way back, starting with 55% SOC and ending with 4% SOC, you achieved 88.2% of a mile per 1% of battery charge used.

These figures match the BEST I've ever achieved, and that's running below 40 mph, in town, careful accelerations and stops, in Normal mode. My temps are usually around 60F.

My median over 50 trips involving high speeds daily, is 64.3% of a mile per 1% of charge, or a 64 mile range.

My wife wants to move to ABQ, so maybe I too can enjoy more range! But then I'd have to sweat :P

Well the week it was over 100 degrees all week (and doing it again this week) I was getting almost 120 miles of city riding to a charge. Same route, same speeds, same driver.

I figure in Phoenix I could go 130-140 miles on a charge...but who would want to ride when it's 115 degrees?

Gavin

doing my high temp testing for Brammo...they owe me big time for the stroke I had last week :)

obviously I didn't make the self imposed deadline of 4 in a week.

Sigh, I am a slacker. Though I was busy with a birth of a grandson and little things like that.

Hold this spot. BrammoBlog is writing some breaking news at this very moment. Being a pest and constantly snooping had uncovered something new and exciting.

Will take a few days to write up, but the next blog is about Ride The Future Tour's trip to Albuquerque.

Sadly I didn't take a lot of photos as I was too busy being filmed riding up and down Sandia Mountain. Also spent time being filmed talking to Ben about Electric Motorcyles while sitting at 10,639 feet and over looking Albuquerque. I bet the video is beautiful...again, too busy for my own photos :(

Being filmed isn't quite as fun as it seems. "We need to do that again because a kid was screaming in the background." "We need to do that again because your mic wasn't working." "We need to film you walking this direction." "We need to film you walking that direction."

The film crew seemed to be having fun...and there was some crazy stuff while filming Ben and I riding on the twisties. I just wish a real rider was doing these corners and not some old man who hasn't dragged a knee since he proposed to his wife...

But it was fun...though much longer than I thought the day would go. "Honey, should be home around 2:30." Gavin walks in at 7:30 to a few dirty looks...

And I totally missed Ride The Future Tour's party downtown at the convention center...but then so do the film crew and Ben and his Zero motorcycle.

I'd be careful, Gavin... it looks as though that helmet might draw lightning out of those thunderheads! :o

Ha...there is soooooo much lightning up there this time of year with the summer monsoons in full effect. I easily saw 100 lightning bolts in the two days i was up there. I was doing some riding at over 8000 feet on some flat mesa sections and was often the tallest object around and thought a few times, "I wonder if this big electric motor and mass of batteries will attract or repel lightning?"

I'm pretty sure it won't repel the lightning so I did limit some of my riding when the storms moved overhead.

Gavin,

Why not put the Empulse in the truck bed? I recall the Enertia Plus did pretty well in the bed..

As an aside: I moved up to Nashville recently. I put the Zero in the moving van and tied it down to the side rails. Not sure how much the U-Haul people would have liked that if they had known : P

My wife asked the same thing.

Truthfully, the Empulse is just a bit heavy for me to move in and out of the truck by myself. A younger, more confident man can do it...or maybe if I had a longer and wider ramp...

But the extra hundred pounds over the Enertia gives me "pause".

Thinking about it, I should look into a longer and wider ramp. My current ramp is nice as it doubles as a bed extender, but it is short and narrow.

Off to the intrawebs...though I still like the idea of a small motorcycle trailer made for the Empulse.

my ramp
(http://www.discountramps.com/mcImages/ready-ramp-bed-extender-21.jpg)
but the angle up is steep...and coming down is a bit of work...I worried I might drop the Empulse...which would be bad...I might drop the empulse on me...which would be worse.

dang...they do fill width ramps...why didn't i get one of these?

oh well...maybe...funny, i added the hitch for the truck for the Empulse...and now I could get the wide ramp and not need a hitch...i am all over the place on this...

one thing I know. the short, narrow ramp is no longer what I need. Either a trailer or the wide ramp.

I borrowed a truck and ramp from a friend to load the bike up. I believe it's this ramp, or one very much like it.

http://www.harborfreight.com/super-wide-tri-fold-loading-ramp-90018.html (http://www.harborfreight.com/super-wide-tri-fold-loading-ramp-90018.html)

The rung gap gave me a little bit of pause - you REALLY don't want to get a foot stuck while walking the bike down. However, in practice it worked out just fine.

Price is right, but those gaps ARE scary looking.

Maybe a piece of 3/8" ply with some cross strips screwed to it and secured to the ramp with a couple of u-bolts and wing nuts?

I vote for the trailer.  I have a feeling you are going to be riding Brammos for a very long time.  A low small trailer is so much easier to deal with.  And it has many more uses than just motorcycles.  Much more useful than just a ramp.  Just my thoughts.

+1 on the sunset reflection.

NM is so full of beauty and wonderful light, that I vote you always haul a DSLR on your rides! Though iPhone's do pretty well for a phone, even a Canon PowerShot that fits in your pocket is better and offers more control.

Ken Rockwell like this one here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/s100.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/s100.htm)

Gavin, you might like Ken's sample images on Route 66 here:

So, your wife rolls her eyes and shakes her head? Mine just gives me "the look." I captured it once on my camera, but if I were to ever post it online, I'd wake up dead.

Should have a blog post up in a couple of days...took a ride for the cure out to Madrid, NM...one of my favorite rides and the weather was perfect. Thousands of bikes and so thousands of questions about my electric ride.

One photo...I park where I want...even if that is beneath some large red chili peppers....

I thought they were lobster claws at first...

Because New Mexico is famous for its lobsters :)

I'm not really sure what the history is of these giant chili peppers...they are old and weathered and not "in" town, but semi hidden behind the mine shaft tavern. This is not a parking area, but you know "I park where I want."
