Title: NEMA 5-15 3.8kW charger??
Post by: shayan on March 10, 2017, 07:32:38 PM
Whats the deal with this charger?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7L1L8T?psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7L1L8T?psc=1)

It advertises 110-220v and 3.8kW (16A) output power from a standard 5-15 plug. How is that possible? isnt 5-15 always a 110v outlet?

The two Amazon reviews say that it works great with their "Toyota Leaf".  I would avoid this product!

It shows a 5-15 in the pictures, but the line claiming compatibility with multiple outlet types says "with adapters".  It's hard to tell from the pictures if the 5-15 pigtail is removable and they don't mention providing any other outlet adapters or show any in the pictures, but that would have to be how they did it.

Technically the Tesla UMC is a similar product that varies its output depending on which outlet adapter you put on the end of it.  (But, at 10kW max power.)

I ordered that and returned it back since it did not have any 240v adapters and no connectors that i could change.

I got this instead:

This is such a great charger! it has 3 modes 8A, 12A, 16A modes and all 3 work great!
Its lightweight and comes with nema 5-15 and nema 14-30 adapter(i guess, because its a 3 pin plug which fits into either a 14-30 or a 14-50 plug). The default connector is a L6-20. I got a dryer adapter and tried and saw that the 16A mode works well too.

Overall a good multi-voltage charger. It works good and i dont have to carry multiple chargers in my backpack  8)
