Title: Steve's scraped helmet?
Post by: Brammofan on May 04, 2012, 09:03:26 PM
Brian just posted this on twitter with a "This just happened":
[smg id=338 width=600]

Nothing besides that.  I inquired further and will update.

Just heard this:
> Steve has crashed okay but in hospital - bike battered…
Title: Re: Steve's scraped helmet?
Post by: Gavin on May 04, 2012, 10:22:03 PM
Ouch....

Hope SteveO is ok with just scraps and bruises.

Looks like Brammo won't be racing at Infineon...

That will make it tough to repeat as champs.

Especially with Lightning running two bikes.

Racing is a cruel bitch...

Yeah... I hope he's out of the hospital soon.

Racing.  What're going to do?

Well.. damn : (

I'll choose to interpret BrammoBrian's tweet as light-hearted meaning that any injuries sustained were minor.

They can rebuild the bike.. make it better.. stronger..

How ironic. 3 hours ago (~6 pm PST), Brammo posted this on Facebook:

Team Icon Brammo all set up at Infineon for the TTXGP..... (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150710630355443&set=a.442402705442.239501.108820970442&type=1&ref=nf)

What a bummer. I hope that Steve is okay.

Latest tweet:
"Thanks for the concern. Steve high sided during practice and crashed pretty hard, but is ok. Bike is another story...:("

Looks like Brian Wismann is carrying the story.

http://twitter.com/#!/brammodesigner (http://twitter.com/#!/brammodesigner)

Brian Wismann:
Thanks for the concern. Steve high sided during practice and crashed pretty hard, but is ok. Bike is another story...:(

Asphalt & Rubber:
@brammodesigner Ouch! It's the curse of the new livery. Hope Steve's alright with his hand, & that you can get it back together for tomorrow

Brian Wismann:
@Asphalt_Rubber As it turns out, the finger isn't so bad compared to 6 fractured vertebrae... He'll be ok, but not racing this weekend.

Asphalt & Rubber:
@brammodesigner Damn. I hear @Shelina93 is in town though...

"6 fractured vertebrae" sounds pretty serious to me. :( So does "Bike is another story...:("

Damn, yeah that sucks. Im not sure those injuries fall under the OK category. Could have been worse though I guess... high sides are nasty as hell.
Title: Re: Steve's scraped helmet?
Post by: Deadly Silent Ninja on May 05, 2012, 09:50:41 AM
He is not going to be racing for months if the 6 vertebrae are truly fractured and not just fissured or bruised. :-\

Unless they have a second bike and Shelina is ready to take over, Brammo's chances to win the championship again are minimum.  :'(

@Gavin: I know, right? He just wrote about it and suddenly he's in the hospital. I'm not superstitious, but SteveO will probably think about it from now on.

I hope he is better than the info leads to believe.
Title: Re: Steve's scraped helmet?
Post by: Gavin on May 05, 2012, 10:24:14 AM
There is quite a range on spine fractures, depending on if the fractures are in the body of the vertebrae vs the transverse or spiny processes. And compression fracture vs fracture fracture etc etc...

Not to minimize it at all...even in the best case Steve O is hurting.

How fast he can come back will be highly variable.

And it sucks on a lot of levels...for Steve, Brammo, TTXGP and the fans....

But is just part of the nature of the beast call racing.

The Empulse RR may be repairable in time to race.... the team are pulling out all the stops....
Guessing Shelina would be the rider.
Title: Re: Steve's scraped helmet?

I hope that they can pull something together. Shelina, or whoever the rider is, may not have had as much time on the bike as Steve, but any finish is better than no finish.

I'm guessing that the Brammo Team are going to have a very busy night tonight (or perhaps they are all getting drunk!)

Latest tweet:

"@ttxgp: #Brammo expected back for Q1 later today. W/new rider. Steve Atlas is OK will be back after a few weeks break for a reboot. #TTXGP"

Wow. That's some fast repair work. Let's hope Steve recovers with a swiftness, and wish Shelina good luck as she's rushed into the rider seat..

Good Luck Shelina
And Brammo

And get well Steve O

Ha! You're all assuming that Shelina is going to be the rider, but are you sure? Perhaps she was busy and someone else is going to be the rider.

Richard (a.k.a. TTXGP Fan)? Gavin (mild mannered Pediatric Sonographer by day, Super Bike racer by night)?  It could be anybody!

:D

Yeah, I'm going to guess it's going to be Shelina too. :P

Good luck to everybody!

Brian just tweeted that they are headed back to the track for qualifying.

Brian just tweeted that they are headed back to the track for qualifying.

Can you confirm who the rider is?  ???

Also, it's great to know that SteveO is not in such a bad shape and will be back sooner than I thought (although a few weeks may be more than a couple of months...)   :(

On Brammo's FB page:

Steve Rapp steps in to ride #1 Empulse RR for Team Icon Brammo. Steve is familiar with electric racing and is known for his aggressive riding style.......
Title: Re: Steve's scraped helmet?
Post by: Deadly Silent Ninja on May 05, 2012, 07:34:40 PM
Well, let's see if his aggressiveness will keep the bike on track. Apparently, the extra power kicks like a horse...  8)
Although Rapp did ride that Mission rocket last year...

I head that Rapp just High Sided??

Any info?

From Facebook:
"More bad news from Infineon I'm afraid...... Steve Rapp has crashed and broken his wrist. Team Icon Brammo are now closing down and coming home. This leaves just one team - Lightning - left in the TTXGP group."

Bad news for Brammo.. big morale hit I'm sure.

Now, it's officially a curse...  :-\

This is not good for the unveiling of the Empulse on the 8th either. It should be all fun and games, maybe even a victory. Now it became kind of a let down. I hope both Steves will recover soon.

Maybe they can use it to sell the Empulse, though. "So powerful even professional race pilots can't handle it." Then, they could have Selina walking in, saying: "Boys..." Shakes her head, mounts, and ride the Empulse towards the sunset...  8)

It would get some points with the female public, especially if she wins the next race.

DSN -that's actually kind of funny (the Shelina part). I'm sure spirits will be high for the official launch. Sucks about the bike and the Steves, though.

These are the latest pieces of news I found:
http://www.examiner.com/article/steve-rapp-rides-and-wrecks-for-brammo-ttxgp-qualifying-round-at-infineon?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter (http://www.examiner.com/article/steve-rapp-rides-and-wrecks-for-brammo-ttxgp-qualifying-round-at-infineon?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter)

http://www.electricracenews.com/2012/05/brammo-with-steve-rapp-riding-crashes.html (http://www.electricracenews.com/2012/05/brammo-with-steve-rapp-riding-crashes.html)

Nothing really new, but it seems that both Steves had their accidents on the same spot. According to one of the posts, Rapp's accident was probably caused by a malfunction, which could have been a result of the first accident:

Quote
Brian Wisman said it definitely was not rider error. There was cooling fluid on the rear tire which is believed to have been a factor. Wisman expressed his most sincere apology to the other teams for which Atlas and Rapp were riding.

Other interest note is, even with the accidents, Brammo had the 3rd best time.
Quote
Other than this incident the qualifying round went off similarly to this mornings practice round.  Both Lightning bikes were tearing up the track, while the four Zero bikes had their own race among themselves.

Results:

Michael Barnes, #80, Lightning Motorcycles, best lap 1:47.553 (manual)
Tim Hunt, #89, Lightning Motorcycles, best lap 1:54.730
Steve Rapp, #1, Team Icon Brammo, best lap 1:57.133 (wrecked, will not race)
Martin Szwarc, #5, Zero Motorcycles, best lap 2:10.342
Kenyon Kluge, #96, Zero Motorcycles, best lap 2:13.893
Jason Lauritzen, #7, Zero Motorcycles, best lap 2:14.161
Jennifer Lauritzen, #619, Zero Motorcycles, best lap 2:18.858

The difference between the 3 brands seem pretty big, though. I don't know how much faster Brammo could have gone, but 10 seconds is really a lot of ground to cover. And Brammo had a 13 seconds lead on the Zeros. It will be a weird race now. The two Lightnings will probably be making full laps around the Zeros. Just based on the times above, Barnes could catch Lauritzen in less than 4 laps.

Cooling fluid = water at a race track, with race bikes.  Glycol coolant is slick and therefore forbidden traditionally. It'd be hard to spot that on only the rear tire after a crash.  I wonder if Brammo doesn't run just water and they just have a flaw in their new RR design where motor coolant is wetting the rear.

Steve Atlas just posted on FB:

Just a quick update: feeling better every day. Still feels like I got hit by a bus, only now it's the short bus and no longer a greyhound ;) Good news is I see a spine specialist later today to make sure nothing else is wrong. Will keep you guys updated with the prognosis. Thanks!
He also posted to someone "See ya tom night right? Rumor has the video is looking pretty amazing! Can't wait to see it!"  I'm guessing that may have something to do with the Empulse launch - so it sounds like he's still planning to be there.

Perhaps he's talking about watching "Cabin in the Woods (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259521/)" with some buddies... ;)

Thank goodness Steve is feeling better and is back on his feet. :D The launch wouldn't be the same without him.
