Title: Companion bike
Post by: roma258 on April 24, 2015, 10:31:06 AM
So just curious what everyone's companion bike is. I mean, the bike you take for stuff your Brammo can't do. Long trips, dirt, 2-up, etc.. My current gas bike is a 2001 Yamaha FZ1, but I'm thinking of swapping it for an SV650. Also wouldn't mind a dual-sport, but had a bad experience with a DRZ400, so now a bit gun shy.

I currently have an '86 VF500F which I have had for 20 years, but I am looking at replacing this with a newer sport touring bike.  I want something with luggage that I can ride 2 up for 400 miles in a day in reasonable comfort that is still fun in the canyons.

BMW R1200RT that's great at collecting dust since I never get around to taking those weekend touring trips that I keep thinking about... ;)

Here is the latest companion to my Zero.  I figure it makes a good contrast.   ::)

My second bike is...    nada.

I kept a 500cc machine with a top box around for longer trips, but, like flar, after about a year, I had used it twice. Also, I hated all that engine trying to shake itself apart! Sold it.

Every once in a while, I look at some sport-touring bikes (FJR looks nice) (had a R1200R and loved it), but after 2 years, nothing jumps out at me enough to want to pull the trigger.

We just need better batteries and faster charging!!

I think if you live near twisties and multiple fast charging options, this arrangement could work. For some of us, it's next to impossible to go on a pleasure ride without committing the entire day. Not complaining, I knew this coming in, but it kind of makes a second bike necessary.

Mine is a Stealth Bomber.  I've told Brian about it the last time he was in Denver doing a techtalk, but it does not sound like Brammo has any interest to build something like it.  He also wouldn't sell me a single BPM-15/90 battery either, lol.  Love the fact that I can pedal and get to exercise with it.

I rent a bike for longer trips / vacation. That way I can choose the right bike for that trip.

Interesting solution, how often to you do that? Wouldn't that get expensive pretty quick?

When I still had my Vectrix it was 4 to 5 times per year

Now only 1 or 2.

Price is between 250 to 500 Euro depending on the bike for a full week.

Please note that I have no space to keep a second bike.

Buell xb12r, I will register it from June to August for those long ride. For sure, i'm not missing the vibration, noise & poor cold idle...
