Off Topic / Re: Battery cooling
« on: August 13, 2012, 08:40:57 PM »
Air cooling will not suffice at the moment which is shown by the problems the Nissan Leaf has in hot areas.
Maybe when batteries can operate at higher temperatures it can become interesting.
For bikes this is even more true because they have less 'skin' around the batteries than cars and when parked in the sun will heat up even more.
That is why such a black box as used on the Zero S is dangerous in my opinion when parked in the sun.

This is a joke, right?  Cars trap their low, wide packs inside a shell, between a greenhouse and a pavement surface.  A shell as airtight as possible, above a pavement surface as close as possible, to reduce drag.  Motorcycles, as empirically demonstrated, place their packs above the skin height (air layer  against the ground), with a generally-vertical layout that coincidentally supports convection.  As for color, you're telling me you see in the infrared?

Also the way social media is being used by the EV leaders (nissan leaf for example) is game changing.
motoring 2.0 and Zero is starting to pick that up now too. Although they should improve on the social media front.
Vectrix totally missed the boat on these fronts and that is probably why they are not very successful.
EV's must be marketed as iPhones and Brammo seems to do well in that.

Yes, one of the things that convinced me that I could go electric was a "social" app for my smartphone.  I could not only see that there were charging locations pretty much where I needed them, but there were also plenty of EV commenters who could vouch for (or put in service requests) on those chargers.  Because when you risk getting stranded, you hesitate to trust that the charger will actually work when you get there... if it is, in fact, actually there.  Call it "strange EVSE anxiety."

Now that is what I call doing your due diligence homework before taking on the task of running a small electric motorcycle start-up company, after being in an organization like HP. I guess he heard some positive comments.

...or maybe he learned his lesson, from being in an organization like HP!

I'm told that, as news of Carly Fiorina's booting got posted and read, you could hear a wave of cheering and yelling sweep across the place.  Maybe that's a Silicon-Valley legend, maybe not.  Then her successor seems to have done as badly.

I should also point out that the motorcycle business is not that big, compared to either computers or cars.  You can't hide behind layers and layers; visiting a dealership and chatting with the boss on hand should be done by even more people than just Richard Walker.

Musk is already heavily invested in Tesla. I recall that at one point earlier he was claiming to be nearing bankruptcy .. though that could have been a ploy for the divorce trial, who knows.

I should clarify: those familiar with Musk's personality and style know he's not the type to let Tesla wither.  In particular, the backstory of the divorce shows he doesn't let things happen, he makes things happen, for better or for worse.  Also, his dealings with the rocket industry show he doesn't accept the hand he's given, he will stack the deck if given the opportunity.  Hence, "huge wad" is both an economic and social description.

SpaceX should be out of the woods, not because their profits are massive (they are profitable, though by how much is hard to put in context).  What's massive is their order backlog, which is of course illiquid, but big enough to ride out the fallout from a bad launch or two without taking the place down.  It's as if Brammo had achieved that Empulse goal (1000 preorders) right off the bat: not a true revenue stream, but an undeniable sign to boost investor confidence.

If they are going to introduce the scooter to the U.S. this fall, it can't be a prototype. It typically takes BMW a long time to get new models to the U.S. My F650GS was manufactured in June 2008 and didn't arrive at my dealer's showroom until September. They must have the factory set up to produce the model now in order to get it here by the "fall".

BMW's motorcycle production is done in batches- their single motorcycle operation is set up for a run of, say, tourers.  After they've built up an inventory of that model, they switch it to another model.  Meanwhile, that stock of tourers has to last months and months.  Don't know if the scooter setup is similar, or if it's a separate system.  Possibly even a contractor facility, given that scooters move in much higher volumes overall.

The only way they could run out of cash is if they somehow miss their 2012 production targets by 90% or more.  Not too likely at this point.

Also, that would require Elon Musk to sit back and let his huge wad sit idle.

(BTW, those familiar with Musk know that it's an apt description.)

Ehhh, Soichiro Honda started out in mopeds, not sedans or generators.  Seems to have worked out for him, though of course postwar Japan is kind of an unusual market.

Yes, pricing structures are a black art.  One company (ChargePoint, I think?) is giving away its memberships as a teaser, with the price increase coming sometime soon.  Thus, the company is losing money now, in the hope of gaining market share.  It happens in almost every industry.  Another (Blink? Ecotality?) is demanding high charging fees right off the bat.  If ChargePoint survives (via deep pockets or solid financing or such), they'll be proven right.  If they go out of business, then it would appear that (unsubsidized) charging stations require these fees.

More likely, as you mention, it varies case by case- some areas have multiple chargers nearby, while some have one "last chance station."  I'm fortunate to have competing chargers in many of the places I go... still not as many as I'd like, of course.

Yes, pretty much J1772 or other Level 2.  I've never seen a Level 1 in this country that had lockout/payment/membership capabilities- anyone else?

There must be a middle ground here somewhere.

I'm guessing the middle ground is having experienced, on-the-ball people.  Yeah, there's the occasional oopsie, or simple bad luck.  But that just pushes back the problem: you then need experienced, on-the-ball people in testing and quality control.

Not to excuse or rationalize it, but... $2.49/hr pays for the electronics, housing, installation time, etc.  If you see free charging (of any level), that means someone deliberately or coincidentally took the hit on installation.  I have some municipal charging locations around me that are free, but only due to various subsidies.  There are other accessible building outlets where 120V charging is free by default (for now), since I called up their staff. They said there is no official policy on plugging into accessible outlets.  So as long as I'm not being a d*ck about it, I fully intend to draw maybe 70 cents of juice.  Still, those unofficial outlets exist because the maintenance staff needed them, so the building owner took the hit on installation for me.

Handy rule in general: don't be a d*ck.  If someone objects to you plugging in, be courteous.  Even if that someone is just a bystander, calmly explain how little the electricity costs, etc.  Don't get upset, don't be confrontational.  As long as the EV community is small, every one of us becomes a de facto spokesman for the rest of us, like it or not.

Also, I can grumble and gripe about $2.49 charging, but I'd rather have it around for emergencies than nothing at all.  I look at it like Starbucks: Starbucks prices make a lot more sense once you realize the drinks are basically milkshakes, and the store a modern-day soda fountain or candy shop.  So I buy the occasional milkshake as a treat to myself; I would never go to Starbucks if I was fixing a daily coffee habit.

Anyone who's a member of this board is not representative of the public at large... even among motorcyclists, you're asking a lot.  As long as more than a few people (besides true hard-luck types, or those with terrible credit) are still leasing automobiles, I won't hold my breath.  As long as Chrysler ads (if I have to single out just one) look like they do, I won't hold my breath.  Heck, I once had a coworker brag about how awesome the extended warranty he got from an electronics retailer was.

We are talking about riders, not accountants.

Any biodiesel vehicles, or SVO?  Biodiesel requires methanol, but even the cheap stuff is made from natural gas, not oil.

I'm not going to ask you to be any more or less hopeful, but the mainstream press request might be a previous agreement they made with a reporter for an "exclusive" to guarantee that the story is even picked up by the (or any) publication.
If someone else reports it before their publication does, it becomes an old story and not a "scoop." So, I think they would love for you to publish it after the mainstream press. That would count as "repercussion" of the story, which is a good thing for both the reporter and the company.

Yes, google "embargo" together with publication or journalism or PR or whatever.  You don't become a successful mass-market company by letting leaks and rumors and buzz and such slip out uncontrolled.  Nor do successful magazines and sites and such stay successful by getting scooped.

The gap between electric and gassers is really closing fast... soon we will see them hanging with liter bikes. The only limiting factor now is the batteries really.

Well, sure, if you have a sponsor.  Like computers before them, the issue is not what they can do, but what YOU can do with the one that you can actually afford.  Right now, no one has built the equivalent of the Apple IIC, though plenty of people have built their Apple I.  Meanwhile MotoCzysz has demonstrated to the world their Unix monster.
