Title: Our Demographics
Post by: Brammofan on January 24, 2012, 02:49:55 PM
I just saw this over on the Tesla forum and thought it would be cool to give it a try over here.
Here's the original post from their forum:

I am curious as to what type of people the reservation holders are. Let's share some personal information while we wait for our babies to come.
I am a 48 year old internist. I have been in practice in Gurnee Il for 20 years. Married, 2 teen boys. My hobby is building wooden ship models. I drive a Chevy Volt. Now you know!
So, age, career/job, location, marital status, kids, hobbies, what you're driving/riding now.  I'll start.

I am a 50 year old federal government employee (lawyer) in Kansas City, Missouri, who's been at this job for about 25 years.  Married.  Four kids (age range: 22-10).  My hobbies are EV enthusiast?, camping, corporate stalking, and geocaching.  I am driving a Honda Pilot and riding a 2010 Brammo Enertia.

I'm 67, been riding for 50 years for almost every day. I have owned 40 motorcycles and accumulated almost 800,000 miles on two wheels.

I am retired from a city engineering department, where I worked for 35 years.

I currently have 6 motorcycles: a 2002 Yamaha FZ1, a 2005 Triumph Bonneville, a 2006 Suzuki SV650, a 2007 BMW R1200R, a 2009 BMW F650GS and a 2010 Electric Motorsport GPR-S with 24 dead and dying 50 Ah Hi Power batteries.

I own one car: a 1998 Saturn SW2 station wagon with almost 21,000 miles on the clock.

I have a married daughter and two granddaughters. She owns two motorcycles (a 1981 BMW R65LS and a 2003 Kawasaki 250 Ninja) and her husband owns two VFR's, a 1986 700 and a 2000 800.

I like to ride my motorcycles into the Santa Cruz Mountains and go hiking, as well as going on camping trips. I also like reading and learning as much as I can about motorcycles.

I am waiting for another electric motorcycle to arrive and hope that I can finally get rid of the GPR-S to someone who can make it run again.   :o

I'm 54, software engineer in the Portland OR area.  Married with two our of the house kids.  Hobbies includes motorcycles and kayaks.  (The lastest kayak uses a recumbent bicycle/prop drive).  Currently driving a '10 Prius and '07 Suzuki Vstrom 650.  Been riding motorcycles for a bit more than 25 years.  I have owned 20+ bikes over the years.  Ordered Empulse 10 in July 2010.  My work has put in a charging station and even looked up the Empulse dimensions so the bike will have its own space behind the station.

I live not too far from EmpulseBuyer.
I'm also a geek (15 years) and not too much older than EB.
Same hobbies except for the bow hunting thing. (bow hunting?  Seriously?  Can I lend you my shotgun?)
I'm the guy giving +1's to EB's posts against EV nay-sayers.
My 2-wheeled ride is a 'zuki SV six-fiddy.

Oh, and I don't have any kids of my own at home, but it looks like EB's going to be raising one of mine for me...   ;)

I keed, I keed....   ;D

I'm a 36 y/o website Performance Analyst that has been in IT since '98. I live in far west chicago suburbs.

Married with two boys.

I ride and have an strange desire to learn all trivial details of anything with 2 wheels. Love bikes and most people who ride them.

I learned the value of community forums back in '99 when I got my sv650. You learn *a lot* and make great friends. I have built and run forums since '05.

I tend to buy bikes that are a good bang for the buck or break the mold. Yes my friends pick on me for it. :D I currently ride a DRZ400s and a Hyosung GT250R. I prefer dirt.

I drive a Nissan Xterra.

I'm a 40 year old software engineer in the computer games industry. ;D
I live in Orlando, Florida. I'm currently engaged, and don't have any children.
I used to ride an old Kawasaki 750 Ninja, until it required more attention than I was prepared to give it, and so I gave it to a mechanic friend of mine to play with.
I currently drive a Chrysler Town & Country (mini van), but the poor gas mileage and ever increasing fuel costs is "encouraging" me to get something else soon. (Like a Brammo Empulse!)

28 years old living in the suburbs of Chicago.  Work primarily in Technology Transfer for the Dept. of Energy, and teach the basic rider course for the MSF.  Currently driving an '04 V70R during the winter, and also have a Mazdaspeed Miata for summer fun.  I do more miles on the bikes than the Miata annually, though.  '03 SV650 is mainly track duty, and also sport a 1098S for street (the Empulse will probably replace this one).  I spend a lot of time doing indoor go karting, and my girlfriend has me doing ballroom dancing lessons - which is more fun than it sounds.

I'm a 29 year old software developer. I worked as a contractor for a county in Norcal, but now work as a software consultant for a fortune 100 healthcare company in Scottsdale, AZ
I ordered 'my' Empulse 10 pretty much as soon as pre-booking opened and my number is in single digits :)
Hopefully I'll get it before my 30th birthday...
I'm single, no kids as far as I know :D
My hobbies include - adventure sports such as rock climbing, hiking, camping, snowboarding ( Just started this January), working on my house, woodwork, staying abreast with the latest in technology, gadgets, cooking, etc etc
I presently don't have a motorcycle, I rode a scooter in college...
I drive a 2006 Acura Tl, it's decent on gas when I treat it right 19 city 29 freeway. But since I drive fairly aggressively I tend to get 21 ish...
I've been tempted multiple times these past few months by the ducati monster 696/796, but I'm holding on...

I'm 43 years old, working as a developer in a multimedia agency making web games for kids and educational tools. Married, 2 children: a boy of 4 and a girl (she lived to be 4 but died 3 years ago - she had a heart defect from birth) and living in Amsterdam (Netherlands).
Messing around with computers and mobile devices is my job but also my main hobby.
I drive a '92 Suzuki Intruder 750 to work in the city, about 7 miles one way, slowly passing the constant stream of cars trying to get into the city too.
I feel increasingly embarrassed about the smell and noise it makes when waiting at traffic lights so that's why I preordered a black Enertia+ in november 2010. Waiting patiently... (not)

Take a look at my future parking spot: If you look carefully, you can see the EA logo on the "EV Only" parking sign. :)

50. Liberal.

Pediatric Sonographer (I actually do all types of ultrasounds, but for the last 16 years I have focused on congenital heart disease from in utero through adult).

Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Married 26 2/3 years. Two wonderful daughters, 23 and 22. One amazing grand daughter, 9 months.

Riding, hanging with the family, camping, more riding.

I currently have 3 rides, 2 I own, one I am "loaned/testing" :)   Big Scooter is a MP3-500. Cage is a Fiat 500 Prima Edizione . Loaned/Testing vehicle is an Enertia.

Once the Plus comes out I will have that. Once either the Volvo C30 EV or the Fiat 500 EV comes out I will be trading in my current gas Fiat for an all electric cage. If either is delayed too long I will get another EV...maybe a Honda Fit EV or similar.

Hobbies include health and fitness.
I'm a real newbie, I haven't rode a motorbike since childhood but where I live and work it makes lots of sense. The weather year round is great and everything is within 10 miles of home. Besides cruising A1A to South Beach on an Empulse sounds like fun!

Not on the list yet, but Empulse 10 is my top choice at this point to make use of the new 10.5 kW solar array we're installing.

42, married 14 years - Programmer -
Started riding a '79 XS650 in '95, graduated to '96 Katana 600 and clocked 33k before it was nicked in 2000.  Fast forward to 2008 and I picked up a leftover '08 Triumph Daytona 675(39mpg avg).  My wife has an '08 Ninja 650R(52) and a '73 GT550 stinkwheel(30) that I built into a cafe racer.

Big motorhead, current collection: '48 Chevy 1/2 ton (14mpg avg), '56 MGA(~27), '72 BMW 2002(22 it's breathed on), '00 Z3(27), '07 MINI Cooper S(33.5), '09 Elise(29) (most of them even run)

Current hobbies include cars/bikes, wrenching, koi pond, reef aquariums, sim racing.  I've considered building my own EV for several years, but the battery tech is still too pricey to dump into a project that might never go.  So I'm hoping I can swing an Empulse and have the gas savings pay for it over time.  I commute 51 miles a day.  Some day I might build our MG into an EV, when LiPo batteries are ubiquitous.  One sucky part of the EV revolution may be that cars/bikes won't fare well if not used daily or within that week.

I don't think weekly use is necessary, but you definitely can't throw a tarp over it and come back 5 years later and dust it off.

Zero says 3000 cycles on their new batteries (to 80%, at 25C and low discharge rates, in a lab). I'm getting 70 miles per charge, I definitely do not expect the bike to last 200k miles. I'd be happy with 10 years of use - but you definitely have to enjoy riding it to justify it.

I signed up for the Empulse 10.0 because my commute to work is 30 miles on 90% highway and wanted to make sure that I had range to spare a long time down the road, so to speak.

Name: Travis
Age: 32
Location: Portland area
Work: Electrical Engineer/Applications engineer
owner of Electro Motive Force, LLC (EV Parts and consulting)

While I don't own a Brammo (yet), I went down a couple years back and hung out with Brian Wissman and toured the shop. Great setup they've got. Haven't been down lately, but I do keep tabs on the industry.

A few years ago I converted a Honda VFR700F to electric and in the past year or so, I've been upgrading to AC and Lithium. Got into selling batteries and motors and controllers and started my own business last year. Met Brammofan at some of the TTXGP races a couple years back and know quite a few people in the industry and even spent some time working with some of the race teams.

Would like to own a Brammo someday, but my conversion will do for now.

Hello everyone! I am 22 years old, becoming 23 this summer! I am almost done with finishing my Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology. I am hoping to apply to pharmacy school next year. I live in Denver, Colorado and was born in Brazil. I have a girlfriend that I have been with for the past three years. I love her a lot and I got her addicted to the electric car concept :)    She loves the new Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf. I hope that we can get a electric car when we are done with graduate schools. No kids at the time. I have had a lot of hobbies in the past involving coin collecting, building model rocket ships, card collecting, motorcycle riding, and traveling! I had a 2003 Honda CBR600RR and it was a blast! I had it for two years and now I want to go to a different path. I would like to stop polluting our environment and start helping it!

Oh yeah, I would like to get the Brammo Empulse and I was on waiting list since February. I hope the bike comes out to be affordable for us younger people so I can ride to campus and show off the beautiful bike :)

Thought I better add my details as I've put up a few posts:

Age: 38
Job: Heli pilot
Location: Holland but varied
Vehicles: Mercedes C200. Dax Rush(self build). Had a Triumph Triple engined bike for 6 years but sold it during a 'cost cutting excercise'! Wish I hadn't - loved it, miss it.
Hobbies: Music, Boating, Woodwork.
Family: Engaged, dog
Want to do my bit to prevent us using up the world's resources and offset my JET A1 usage but frustrated by actual government and popular support despite the media coverage. Try putting up a solar panel or wind turbine in Europe, for instance. Believe the only solution is through low personal effort solutions like buying a Brammo bike or a house with panels already installed.

I am a 29 y/o (turning 30 this year) male
A proud enlisted member of our fine United States Navy.
I used to ride a 2005 Harley Sportster but had to sell it when I enlisted.
I am very into green technology and jumping onto a new/emerging thing that I feel is going in a very cool direction, such as Brammo. That fact that it is a home grown all American company is even better.

46, Electrical engineer in the process industries, single.

Owned a Harley Road King and a Suzuki GN400 in the past. Wanted a bike again 6 months after I sold the Harley, because I wasn't getting the chance to ride it often :)

Maybe being a EE is the reason I'm interested in EVs, despite being generally conservative/libertarian. Then again, I'd like to reduce our dependence on oil (foreign or domestic, doesn't matter, it's going to the highest bidder anyway).

Intrigued by the Empulse, but didn't know when it would actually be available, so got a Zero DS and am really enjoying it. I probably wouldn't frequent the Brammo forum, even though I like their products and wish them well, but for the fact that my lame ride log got mentioned in a thread here :)

32 year old Electrical Engineer
I work in the Energy Management sector (mostly lighting controls and sub-metering). I converted a 1986 VFR700 to electric, and has been in perpetual upgrade. During that time I started a side business Electro Motive Force, LLC selling motors/controllers/batteries/bms/chargers etc as well as doing consulting for other OEMs/customers on the side (battery testing, system design). Finally decided to call it quits on my conversion and am parting things out and considering a Brammo or Zero. Shopping around right now.

[edit]
Parted out my eVFR project and decided to buy a Brammo. Got Brammo Empulse R #24 in white. Love it!

41 year old with a BSEE
I work as a Test Engineer for a company that provides internet connectivity to airplanes.  While going to college in Florida, during the last two years, I commuted with a Suzuki Katana 600.  I liked the bike a lot.  After I graduated I got a job with a telecom company in Chicago; however, I was so broke at the time I had to sell the bike in order to get a plane ticket and show up for the first day of work.  Funny I never had an interest in getting another one until Brammo announced the Empulse.  Its a good thing I kept my license.

36 yr old Physics teacher near NYC (in Northern NJ).  I rode across the country on my 2012 Zero S with the Ride the Future Tour.  I also drive a 2012 Mitsubishi iMiEV (electric car) or take the train into the city.  I perform, teach and compete in swing dancing with a specialization in aerials (throwing a girl over my head).  Love to hike, camp and be outdoors in general.  Also serve as Sustainability Coordinator where I work (ie - helping our community and buildings go green).

Have attached 4.5kW of chargers to my Zero S and plan to take some road trips down to DC and up to Boston on it soon!

Rode a Brammo Empulse R while attending the EV Summit at Google Headquarters in Mountain View and had a great time hanging out with the Brammo guys all day.

Healthcare administrator/leader - was in IT for awhile, have a Master's in Computer Science.
Indianapolis, Indiana
Been riding motos for 26 years, started on a 75 Honda CB200T. I've enjoyed cars, but find motos more engaging. I commute daily on my motos during all seasons...snow/ice is the only thing that keeps me off them. Throughout the years I've gone through a number of bikes. About 5 years ago I got my first sport bike and fell in love with its capabilities - started tracking. Wife started riding and tracking about  years ago.

Current hobbies include moto tracking/racing, working out, traveling abroad, and bicycle riding.

Vehicles include what is in my siggy below + R53 Mini Cooper S, R56 Mini Cooper S, and Honda S2000.

Network security engineer, no schooling or letters attached the end of my name.  Originally from SoCal, recent-ish transplant to Austin.  Just picked up a 2013 Enertia Plus on Saturday.  Garage also contains; BMW R1100s, K100, Suzuki DRZ400sm, and VW R32 (read that as: single, no kids :) ).  Hobbies span from camping and offroading, shooting (cameras, firearms), reading, sudokus, and coffee.  Lots and lots of coffee.

Been skimming the forums the last week, I'll be popping up here and there with possibly old questions and maybe some new ones.

41 year-old software tester near Redmond, WA
Married, no children
Wife got me into riding 8 years ago; her father's a H-D veteran

Our road to EVs started with simply watching our budget to get out of college debt and vehicle loans.  When it came time to replace a vehicle, hybrids seemed to be a reasonable choice for fuel economy, so we replaced two ICE cars with one hybrid and rode our ICE bikes when we could (there were no cheap EV bikes with useful range at the time).

Didn't consider the Nissan LEAF when it first came out, but circumstances changed, making it necessary to have a 2nd car again.  To improve upon a hybrid, a plug-in EV seemed to be the logical choice, so after test driving the LEAF, Volt, and Mitsubishi i, we fell in love with the LEAF.

After the LEAF got me hooked on EVs, I started seriously looking into electric motorcycles that might similarly replace my ICE motorcycle.  Encouraged by the claim of 100-mile highway range of the Zero S with Power Tank and after learning the convenience of charging the LEAF to full in 30-45 minutes with CHAdeMO, started saving up for the Zero with CHAdeMO adapter.  Brammo's Empulse was 2nd on the list because it only had 50-60 miles of highway range and Level 2 charging, which at 3.5 hours empty to full was much slower.  Then I learned that Zero's CHAdeMO compatibility was highly dependent upon the EVSE equipment supporting the lower voltage of its battery pack relative to EV car battery packs.  Not being able to rely on CHAdeMO, Zero's advantage of greater range was thus defeated by it's abysmally slow 11-hour Level 1 (120V) charging speed.  While that isn't much of a problem for daily commuting, having 100 miles of range tempts me into thinking it's ready for touring, but making overnight stops to charge after only 100 miles of travel kills the idea of the 200-300 mile day trips my ICE bike does comfortably.

So while I was agonizing over the decision between Zero and Brammo, this opportunity (http://brammoforum.com/index.php?topic=2550.msg19131#msg19131) appeared, and I finally snapped.  Between reading all of the favorable posts about Brammo reliability and customer service on this forum, and reading the heroics that Terry Hershner and others have to go through to kit their bikes out with fairings and bulky external chargers, plus recent horror stories about Zero malfunctions and unhappy customers and potential customers, AND based on a surprise announcement that Brammo had just appointed its first authorized dealer in Washington State (http://www.electricbikeseattle.com), it became clear that it would be futile to expect this generation of electric motorcycles to be ready for touring, and made it more attractive to go with Brammo.

So thanks to Aqualung1, I am grateful to be able to experience the current generation of e-motorcycles and help promote them in an area dominated by wealthy tech employees who litter the streets with their Teslas and LEAFs, but where an e-motorcycle sighting is still a blue-moon event.

Glad to be here and thank you all for the information you're sharing to help us all learn about these exciting motorcycles!  I look forward to learning and sharing with you.

Welcome MichaelJ and thanks for sharing your story.

I've found that once I fully took in that I wasn't going to be touring on the Empulse, it fully met 99.5% of my needs with GREAT elan. Actually, I did ride mine from San Francisco to Ventura round trip, but each way took about 2 1/2 days.

It was actually a much more enjoyable trip than blasting down the superslab staring at the bumper in front of me. Just needs a change in perspective from a guy that used to get impatient when the microwave took more than a minute to heat my coffee!

52 years old, married 22 years with one child.
I live in NW New Jersey, working for an exhibition design and fabrication company specializing in display solutions for museum collections and private clients.
A newbie rider, having researched both Brammo and Zero motorcycles for several months before pulling the trigger on an Enertia Plus.  I have a very short daily commute of 10 miles roundtrip to my office and I was tired of driving in a vehicle; the gas, the maintenance, etc.  However, my Subaru is still a necessity given the harsh winters and the occasional trip with the family.  Rather than sell or trade-in a perfectly good vehicle and start payments on a new car, I thought, "why not extend the life-span of my current car by buying a less expensive mode of transportation for the daily commute?".  The way I figure it, I just bought a new vehicle (the Enertia Plus) that is better than half the price of most new cars and it will delay the inevitable replacement of my current vehicle for many years.  Besides the savings from going electric and being nearly maintenance free, it is a blast to ride.  I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase the Brammo Enertia Plus!
Regards,
Theoplus

So, age, career/job, location, marital status, kids, hobbies, what you're driving/riding now......

34 year old Married Insurance Agent / Business Manager at Euro Cycles of Tampa.

I have always been interested in electric motorcycles and after riding one I fell in love.  I have had multiple bikes the past... Katana 600 & 750, R6, GSXR750,  Ninja 650 and another R6 as well as a Honda CR250 dirtbike.   I was honestly amazed by how much fun I had on the Brammo and couldn't pass it up!

I don't have any kids, but have a Chevy Silverado, Bayliner 185 boat, and the wife has a Mazda 3.

I like to boat, mountain bike, kayak, go camping and ride motorcycles.

I commute to work (70 miles a day round trip) on the Brammo....  It saves me a ton vs the Silverado and is way more fun!

Hi from the Netherlands!

I'm a car mechanic and I was hooked to the Brammo Empulse R as soon as I read about the performance and specs. This would be the ideal vehicle for me.
So I went to the dealers, test ride, bought one...  in red.

I am a 45 year old car mechanic, married, 2 kids.
commute 40 miles to my job with my ZX9R or Ford Focus diesel.
So from now on: commute with the Brammo Empulse
In fact: go anywhere with the Brammo, just love to take it for a ride.

Welcome Jeff! If you are a car mechanic, you will be SO frustrated with the Empulse... nothing much to make you want to get your wrenches out of their cabinet!

Hi, I'm from Belgium, Antwerp region.
40 years old and happily married, 2 children
After a Bandit 600, FJR, Guzzi 1200 sport, I'm now commuting and traveling on an Aprilia Tuono 4VR.
January 2016 will be the time I'm swapping the bike and since I'm looking at electric bikes for "ages" already, I hope these bikes will be mature enough to take the step by then.
I commute 55km (one way every day) so for commuting there are no cons anymore but I also like to travel a lot (about 350 km/day) and then the mileage devil appears.

Welcome Blue Thunder. Yes, sounds like you'll need to keep the ICE bike for longer distance work, but as a commuter, I find the Empulse a perfect fit: fast off the line, nimble, great brakes, no tuneups, clean, and cheap fuel.

Welcome on this forum Blue Thunder. Same Blue Thunder as in MAG and Emiel I guess ?
Indeed, the world is a very small place, isn't it?
I just calculated the TCO of a Brammo empulse R over a 3 year span and hell... this bike is much cheaper than the Tuono I own now. So, plans are to buy the Brammo as soon as my depreciation rate comes at the level I better buy a new bike and that will be early 2016. Meanwhile, I hope range will get better for the 2016 models :-) so I'm not forced to buy a cheapass touring bike for my weekly rideouts and my motorcycle holidays.
