Wow.  I almost rode it today.  Now I wish I had just to get 2 data points.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Firmware update notice
« on: April 08, 2013, 12:24:22 AM »
I'm 120 miles away. Called the dealer today asking if they could send me a thumb drive, but it sounds like the install is a little more complicated. They wanted to install it on their demo first, too. If I can't make it up there this Saturday, it will likely be the end of May before I get a free weekend. This would be an all day trip for me since I would need about 6 hours of level II charging to make it there and back based on the range I've been getting, not to mention the 3 hours of riding each way since I'll be on backroads and the hour to do the service. (I do own a motorcycle trailer, but it's only used for track days, and when I screw up. If they bike is working and has lights, it's being riden!) The dealer considering coming down and doing my bike and Travelin's together since we only live a few miles apart.

The worst part is that it sounds like this upgrade will be really good for me, so I really want it installed soon. It's been cold up here, and I would love for the bike to be more cold-weather friendly. Plus one of the local high power chargers (at Two Brother's brewery - great atmosphere and delicious food!) only charges at 15 amps, so I'm hoping the upgrade would allow me to charge at full capacity while I'm there

Thanks for taking with Suburban I thought I was going to have to negotiate meeting them at a halfway point.  Maybe at Zion or North Chicago near a Train stop just in case something went wrong.  BC me to let me know what day you were thinking about having them come down.  My schedule is pretty flexible.

Just had mine done at 3000 miles. Plan on the process taking about two hours. They have to change the firmware for each battery separately.

I'll let you know if I notice any changes but so far it seems to be running about the same. I do notice that the range indicator does not jump all over the place quite as much.

One change I didn't like: they reduced several fuse sizes due to electrical changes in the overall system. The accessory port's fuse is now 5 amps instead of 10.  :'( Good thing winter is about over.

This actually makes sense now.  I test drove a demo unit before signing the contract for the bike at the IMS in Chicago.  Powerlet had a demo bike with a pretty cool setup with a 12v outlet mounted above the center of the handlebars.  I asked if it could get a quote for the setup and some headed gear.  The Powerlet rep told me that heated gear really couldn't be used because the wiring for the accessory port was gauged too high to support it.  They felt a 10 amp fuse was a mistake for the circuit.  Seems like they were right.

Thanks for the clarification.

You may be right.  The concerns I have would be the potential build up of dirt that could develop between the cables and the sheath.  Also I didn't have a chance to check this yet but, if the other end of the sheath isn't secured it could side up the cable and leave an area that is subject to rubbing exposed.  At the same time there could be a reason for exposing the cable that I'm not aware of yet.

Does anyone know if the sheaths that cover the wiring to the motor are supposed to completely cover them or should some orange be exposed near the motor itself?

SopFu, let us know how that ride goes tomorrow.  My commute happens to be just under 35 miles.  I was only going to consider getting cold weather gear at the end of the upcoming season.  However, with gas prices on the rise I might be able to justify an early purchase if your experience is good.

Thanks guys.  That wiki came up pretty quick.  I hope others get some use out of it.  If reduces at least one extra trip to the DMV it will be worth it.

Sopfu, I did go to 75th street.  After my third visit they began to recognize me.  At least that whole ordeal is over now I just have to wait for better weather.  What did that groundhog do? :D

Brammo Empulse / Out of State Registration
« on: February 26, 2013, 10:59:16 AM »
Since there are more states then dealerships at this point, more of us will have to make a trip to the DMV to get plates for our bikes.  In Illinois I ran into a problem which turn out to really be a need to educate the folks in the particular office I went to.

I had given them the make and model of the vehicle and it did not come up in their database so more detailed questions were asked.  When the question of how many CC's came up I had answered that the bike was electric but was equivalent to more than 150cc, knowing that this would place it in the MCY class and not moped.

This had caused several folks in the office to scratch their heads.  Then more questions related to battery capacity, range, and top speed.  Based on the documentation they felt it should be classified as a EV car!
They couldn't be sure until they contacted Diana McSee at the Secretary of States office.  Unfortunately, that office was closed on Saturday and the DMV was closed on Monday.

I spoke to her yesterday and sure enough she agreed with my original assumption.  I'm headed to the DMV today if this snow storm will allow it.

So the lesson here is in IL make sure you register your bike during Secretary of State Office hours so that you can reach Diana McSee @ 217-782-2284.  Her office hours are M-F 8:00am to 4:30pm.  I'm also going to find out what it will take to get a vehicle placed in the database.

Yes Congrats Sopfu!  They delivered mine today too.  I got to see yours on the Sprinter.  Red seems to be a popular color.  I chose that too.  Next step, get it registered and wait for better weather.

I noticed you have yours inside, are you concerned with cold weather storage?  The dealer charged mine fully and I'm going to have to drive it down to 70% but the owner's manual doesn't directly mention optimal storage temps.

Sorry to hear that.  Sometimes I think it would be best not to contact us until the bikes are actually in.  If information is going to be given about the process it should be complete.  From the time it is on the assembly line to delivery not this maybe it will be in on Monday stuff.

That's weird. Mark had your VIN like a week before he had mine. I heard you got to ride the pre-production demo at the IMS. We'll have to get together sometime! I'm in Wheaton, BTW.

You're right I was originally told that my bike came in with the demo unit for the dealership and I did have a great opportunity of an indoor test drive at the IMS in Rosemont.  It might have been the setting but the bike seems quieter than what I've seen from the videos.  Nevertheless, you will be please.

When I spoke to Mark last Thursday he told me the bike was on it's way and arriving on Monday. ???  I didn't push the issue since I figured he was confused.  Plus I'm not in too much of a rush to take possession of the bike until the weather gets a little better.  One day we'll have to swap buying experience stories over a brew. ::)

I live in Naperville BTW.  Congratulations and good luck on Monday.

Hi SopFu,
It looks like our bikes are on the same shipment, #45 for me.  I also live in the western burbs of Chi town.  Unfortunately, I have to watch my kids on Monday.  Would have loved to have made it a group ride though.

41 year old with a BSEE
I work as a Test Engineer for a company that provides internet connectivity to airplanes.  While going to college in Florida, during the last two years, I commuted with a Suzuki Katana 600.  I liked the bike a lot.  After I graduated I got a job with a telecom company in Chicago; however, I was so broke at the time I had to sell the bike in order to get a plane ticket and show up for the first day of work.  Funny I never had an interest in getting another one until Brammo announced the Empulse.  Its a good thing I kept my license.
