I also have the "Get Service V78" message, which is annoying because I'm trying to sell my Empulse and having that message on constant display isn't a selling point (even if it's just a clock failure).

I'm selling because my office moved over near the ferry building and my employer subsidizes the ferry ride.  As much as I've enjoyed commuting on the Empulse, the ferry from Larkspur is a better way to go.

PR 4's have been great for me.  I can't remember exactly when I replaced them but both tires have at least 7,000 miles and are not done yet.

Arlen Ness fixed my Empulse when it stopped charging.  It was the first Empulse they had worked on, and my impression was that Adam from Brammo lent them the diagnostic equipment they needed and held their hand step by step through the process.  So no, they did not seem at all ready, but on the positive side, it seems like a great shop full with an excellent service department, and just about a quarter mile from a BART station.

The Victory has a bit more range, doesn't it?

Almost all my charging has been at my work, which is Level II.  I was told this was a "known problem" and that the replacement connectors will not fail in this way.

I would be remiss if I did not add to the accolades for Adam Lukoic.  He kept in touch with me throughout the entire process, and I always felt that he was personally invested in solving this problem as soon as possible.  It took a long time to get resolved, but that's not Adam's fault, it was just the unfortunate situation of developing a problem during this Brammo-to-Victory transition.

I don't know how Adam will keep this up if the Empulse starts selling in real numbers.  Hopefully his minions will be as good as he is.

I'm happy to report that I'm charging again and back on the road.  It was a long process because Brammo, mainly in the person of Adam Lukoic, basically had to establish a new service center for the Bay Area.  Scuderia will no longer do Empulse-specific work, such as a failed charging system.  From what I can gather, Adam talked to Polaris and a decision was made to make Arlen Ness Motorcycles in Dublin the new service center.  This of course would have happened anyway when Victory began selling the Empulse, my problem was just the catalyst for it happening a bit sooner.

Arlen Ness is a big place.  I guess Arlen is a well known name in custom cruisers, which is why I'd never heard of him.  But it's a classy operation, squeaky clean, and looks like they make money hand over fist.  Cruisers galore.  So it's strange to go there for matters related to an electric sport bike.  But Jon, the service manager, seems to be quite happy to be in the Empulse business now.

The problem, I was told, was the connectors to the charger.  They melted.  I was told this is a "known problem," the solution to which is to install more robust connectors.

So I missed about two months on the Empulse, but I have fun riding my new-ish Beemer Nine T in it's place.  And Brammo paid for everything, including the tow to Arlen Ness.

The bummer, for the future, is that Arlen Ness is about 50 miles from either my work or my house.  Scuderia was 20 miles from my house but only 2 miles from my office.  Arlen Ness is close to a BART station -- just 2 blocks.  For ordering parts or any help I might need with tires, brakes, chains, etc., I'll still go to Scuderia.

Awesome pic.  I really regret selling my Enertia+.  That was a mistake and I wish I could undo it.

Adam contacted me and so we're talking.  My charge logs seem to have huge gaps, most of my charging events don't even show up.  Either that or I'm reading them wrong.  I'm going to send the drive to Adam to look at.

Anyway, it's reassuring to know that someone is paying attention and seems to care.

Ted Dillard is definitely not an a*****e, but I have to say, I am also not sure why he's here.  I guess he sees this as another forum to articulate and refine his views on the industry as a whole.  That's fine and well, but I don't think that's why most of us hang out here, and I usually come away from threads like this feeling like I could have spent the time in better ways.  I'll try to make better choices in the future.

But I do like the rhetorical question: what is the opposite of "preaching to the choir"?  Buggering the choirboys?  Too crude, perhaps.  I'll try to come up with something better.

I did read the article and it struck me as mostly opinion based on speculation.   Approaching journalism, but not quite journalism.  It would have been an interesting read if I hadn't already read most of it before.

I think I can answer my own question about testing the fuses -- use a multimeter.

Which I will do tonight.  But I have a bad feeling about this . . .

11
Dash lights up but does not draw current, according to the readout.  This happened at my work, where there are several Level II chargers in the garage, so I tried a few of them, and then tried to charge at home off Level I, always with the same result.

So my first question is an extremely basic one.  When I go to check the fuses, I notice they're not like other fuses I've seen that are transparent so that a blown fuse is visually evident.  These are opaque.  How do you know if it's blown?  I just haven't encountered this before.  The 3 charging fuses all appear the same visually.

If it's not a fuse, then I've got a big problem, because Scuderia no longer does Empulse-specific work and I doubt there's anyone else in the Bay Area now that does.  I suppose I can get on the phone with Polaris and try to talk to someone who will look at the data.   But this could turn into a huge inconvenience.

On the positive side, I'll get more riding time on my Nine T.

Unfortunately Scuderia in San Francisco will no longer be doing work on the Brammo-est parts of the Empulse.  They'll do tires, brakes, chains, etc. . ., but not anything that requires Empulse expertise.  The people at Scuderia didn't know to whom the torch would be passing.

I can still order parts from them, and did so a week ago.  The part isn't here yet, which already signifies a change from the old order, as Brammo used to get parts to Scuderia in two days, three at the most.

I didn't take away the same negativity from the review.  I thought it was useful and fair.  But Jeff's point, though it may have been framed a little to stridently, is a good one.  Range matters as it relates to your daily use, not how you might push the envelope if you really tried.

I don't think I've ever come really close to running out of electrons, simply because I plan my rides with battery capacity in mind.  If I wanted to chase burritos across the city (and I would!), I'd probably take the gas bike, just because I'd want to be free to bust spontaneous moves.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Empulse Vs Empulse R
« on: August 25, 2015, 12:41:12 PM »
I've been on my E1 for almost two years, and never once wished I had more torque or acceleration.  It's more than adequate for real world conditions, which for me is commuting (including freeway) and occasional runs through the Southern Marin twisties.  I do leave it in sport mode.

But there's no denying the torque difference between the E1 and the R.  It's big.  If I was buying today at these fire sale prices, it would be hard for me to pass up the R.  We're motorcyclists, that means we want more power, not less!

At 165 lbs I'm probably right in the wheelhouse for how factory suspensions are set up.  Someone who weighed more or less might find more value in fully adjustable suspension.  But I don't really know what I'm talking about, more just repeating the common wisdom on this topic.
