I think there are a lot of IC auto manufacturers and Big Oil companies who would like to see Tesla fail for one reason or another - all having to do with money.  They have the influence required to make sure that every problem that Tesla encounters (and especially something dramatic like a fire) get reported in a big way.   ::)

Someone did the math on another site.  1 in 1000 gas cars catch fire each year.  While 1 in every 7000 Tesla's have caught fire.  That is a good safety record and will only get better over time.
