Brammo Empulse / Re: Empulse vs. Encite
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:14:48 AM »
Not too sure where you're coming from with that ???, but I would expect the Empulse to have a much better range on pavement. 60/80/100 mile range on the Empulse. Encite will probably be set up with around 30 mile range to keep weight from the battery and motor down for dirt track purposes. It will, of course, depend on how hard you ride, too.

I loved being able to hear Steve's knee plate scrape against the pavement as he was leaning into his left turns. Can't hear anything like that on a gassy!

Brammo Empulse / Re: Cargo? Attachment Points?

Ultimately, if someone wants to steal your stuff, there's little you can really do about it. The best we can usually do is keep the honest people honest. Stolen riding gear has been an issue for many years and we just take a certain amount of risk if we leave anything attached to the bike when we leave it parked. Much as we do with our cars in parking garages and leave anything in them. But I saw some pretty good ideas on this thread for makeshift systems that would work fairly well.

As far as cargo, there are tank bags as well that you can get that ride in front of you. They also give some cushion when you lean into it. Add on some properly made saddlebags and you have a decent setup. I'm pretty sure Brammo will come out with some sort of cargo equipment on their site. The plus would be that it is adapted to fit properly.

Take Angry Sam, add the Brammo girls, throw them all into a roller derby rink with Domesticated Violence on an Enertia as the trainer. We could have a winning team!

I'm thinking ATV. Rear brakes are hardly used most of the time on them but when you need it to drag down a steep slope you need it. More spring in the back would make sense too of you've ever played on tough trails.

I'd love to see what they could come up with on them.

Ah well, thanks for the info. It was pretty quick from inception to race. I can see changes that will make it a more competitive bike with greater power and experiance in practice with the bike.

Brammo released some new information here http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/05/brammo-six-speed-tranmission

In case the link doesn't come through well, here's some of what's in the story. Planned range, 60 - 80 miles on the street, 20 - 30 minutes of hard dirt track. Swappable battery, which will be bigger than the prototypes. Price on extra battery unknown but they want to keep it low enough to not make it too scary to buy. Recharge time of 2 - 3 hours on 110 volts. Approximate release is 2012. Although nothing definite there.

More information available in the report, so I hope you can at least cut and paste it.

Brammo Empulse / Re: Possible 6 speed for the Empulse!
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:23:53 PM »
I'd rather do the shifting myself, but an efficiency indicator is a great idea. Most people are accustomed to the powercurve of an I.C.E. along with sound to know when to shift. An electric does taper of in power at the top end and at this time you're in reduced efficiency. Keeping the motor at the optimum 4800 rpm (or whatever it turns out is best) would probably take at least an indicator to gear up.

To me, the act of shifting is part of the experiance on the bike, but that isn't saying that you have to do it that way. Car's converted with manual transmissions often only use 2nd and 3rd gear for most of the driving, including 3rd gear off the line. That's the advantage of the 100% torque at 0 rpm.

:oThat thing's crazy off the line! I need to research this one and see what went into building it. Time to google.

No doubt it has some good points, namely seating for 2. An $18,000 price tag is more than a bit high. I agree Brammo needs to get the lead out and get to market. They have a better priced product as near as we can tell ready to sell and are just waiting on something to begin large scale production. If they aren't careful Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha will beat them to market with a usable product, and they already have the dealship network in place.

Brammo's doing some great things with R & D but they need to get to market while it's hot! Gas at $4.00 per gallon is a good time to go.

Figure a release date of summer 2013 or so, just by how long its taking to get the Plus and the Empulse out. Legitimatly

Another example of twin motors is the White Zombie street legal electric drag car. It uses 2 8 inch motors coupled one behind the other with a series/parallel switch over that changes how the motors recieve their voltage. Ends up with a 1970 or 72 Datsun doing a <12 second quarter mile. Pretty impressive watching it clean the clock of corvettes, bmw's, and nearly everything else out there. He's really open about how it works. Another is a Pinto out of Alaska called Crazy Horse. Ultimately running 2 motors or more produces twice the torque but does use a lot more battery. Great for getting speed, lousy for range.

Brammo Engage / Re: Engage.....Can pre-order now....but....
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:05:10 AM »
I imagine it will depend on the durability of the transmission. The Engage and Entice are good test bikes for it but are definitely less torquey than the Empulse. The increased torque of the Empulse could be too much for the current technology available. Then again, having gears may give more options for a smaller motor on the Empulse which may in turn reduce costs or increase range further. Increasing range is most likely a goal to enter into the cruiser market. It takes a good 300-400 mile range at 80 mph to have a shot at being taken seriously with the cruisers. That's a long way off today, but the improvements I've seen in the last 2 years say it could be sooner than I think.

I can definitely see the 2 seater in the Enertia Plus as an option. It would probably have to be the plus with added battery for the added weight of not only the passenger but also the heavier frame and added foot pegs. It could be an option for the Empulse with it's heavier batteries and racing frame. I can see the 6 speed going into the Empulse as well.

The video of the Engage I just watched showed it able to pop off the line. With the option of 6 gears to adjust your power you can do much better.
