Bikes For Sale Or Auction / '13 Brammo Empulse R, $3,000 (sold)
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:28:33 PM »
21,468 miles. Single owner. Title in hand.

Does not charge. I am pretty sure it is just the well-known wiring harness issue as it happened after I got a new job and started level II charging at work, but I tried hard-wiring around the offending harness and it still would not charge. Could be that I'm not a mechanic and the bike doesn't like my bodged fix, or it could be something else is more broken. None of the local shops will touch it. I replaced it with a Zero and now I just want the space in my garage back.

It stopped charging in April 2018, and the bike has been sitting ever since. I limped it home from work, and parked it with ~25% SOC. It does turn on. I am confident it would move if you wanted to ride it. That said, it shows 0% SOC, and the battery is likely far out of balance.

Front tire has very few miles, as do the chain and sprockets. I have a second set of new, never installed, sprockets that will go with the bike. One of the fairing bolts is cross-threaded in the frame, and one of the front turn signals has a broken outer lens (from me being careless in the garage). I did tip it over once in a parking lot when I lost my footing getting on, otherwise it has never been down. The front fender has holes where I had extra LED lights mounted (they have been transferred to the Zero). Also has heated grips installed.

I bought the bike to ride, and I did in almost all weather conditions for ~10 mo/year in Chicagoland. It's dirty and well loved. I am disappointed I didn't get more use out of it.

Local pickup only. The bike is somewhat taken apart, and I assume anyone interested would prefer it that way for inspection, etc.

Brammo Empulse / B55 Error, SOC Mismatch >30%
« on: March 20, 2016, 02:07:35 PM »
This error popped up on my ride today. Module 6 does not appear to be discharging. I had two 10 mile trips today (out and back), and it looks like it stopped about half way during the first ride as I pulled onto the interstate (20kw power output for about 5 minutes or so), with about 90%. By the time I got home, it had dropped to about 85%, while the rest of the pack was down to about 60%.

It looks like the battery started acting up on my ride home from work on Friday, but not enough to trigger the error. I pulled a couple other logs, and it otherwise appears to be normal, so this is a new problem.

Here's the log from Friday:

Here's the log going out today:

Here's the log coming home today:

To add some more context, I didn't ride the bike at all from early May last year until the end of February (broken back, then broken arm...). It was stored the hole time with SOC over 90%, and I did do a couple of top-off charges throughout the storage period, but generally it was left unplugged. Since I started riding I have ran it down to 5% and then let it it balance for about 36 hours, and have brought it down below 20% a about three times.

Has this happened to anyone else? What was the cause and the solution?

Off Topic / Interview with Argonne's Jeff Chamberlain
« on: March 14, 2016, 08:43:26 AM »
This is probably one of the simplest but most to the point interviews I've seen on battery technology.

http://www.anl.gov/articles/ask-scientist-ask-battery-scientist

But the real question is would a bomb dog smell bomb material in a clean room, or would the air be too clean?

FWIW, Argonne and 3M each created the "NMC" chemistry which is becoming the go-to tech for EV batteries. I'm pretty sure Brammo uses the 3M stuff since Argonne hasn't licenses their tech to any Chinese companies, but pretty much every auto manufacturer is using Argonne's tech (save Tesla, who is using a relatively old, but more energy dense and more volatile chemistry). However, there is a really big legal battle bubbling up between the two NMC parents since one of Argonne's licensees is complaining there are companies importing Argonne technology claiming they have the right since they have a license from 3M.

Off Topic / Crashed my Bicycle...Should Have Stuck with Track Days
« on: June 02, 2015, 10:57:37 AM »
This past weekend was the Illinois State Criterium Championship. It's actually the first real race I've done this year since I have been planning a wedding that went off without a hitch in the middle of last month. So I am untrained, and not as fit as I was last year. I had a slow start to the 40 minute race, but was feeling good so started moving up. By the half way point I was probably top 10 or so, which is just about perfect. According to a buddy, the leaders slowed down a lot leading into turn one, and they caught me off guard. I slammed on the front brake and did an end-o that I landed in a nice face plant. From there two or three riders behind me ran over me and ended up on the ground. Fortunately I don't remember any of this because I knocked myself out cold from the first hit, and stayed that way for a good 30 to 45 seconds. I woke up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital (or that's my first memory, bystanders report that I was asking if I had won). Turns out I have multiple fractures to my face. The helmet took two big hits, but still transferred enough energy to give me a concussion. The local hospital didn't have the expertise to do the plastic surgery needed, so i got transferred to a Level 1 hospital on the south side of Chicago. My face wasn't hurting much, but my back and chest were killing me. They took more CTs and X-rays and determined my T8 vertebrae is fractured and compressed. So despite the head injury, no sitting up for the last two days. Today I get a ninja-turtle shell which I'll be wearing for the next six to eight weeks. So no work, no motorcycle, and no driving for me until I can sit up without the brace on - probably 6 to 8 weeks. I'll be in the hospital for at least another two days until the plastic surgery on my face is done. I do have road rash all over, too, but I am not worried about that. They black flagged the race and ran a 20 minute sprint after I was cleared off the course.

I've crashed motorcycles pretty badly in my riding career, but nothing compares to this 25mph bicycle wreck. Just goes to show how much good gear matters. Be safe out there everyone.

Brammo Empulse / V78 - Real Time Clock Not Working
« on: May 12, 2015, 11:34:56 AM »
Anyone get this before? It came on yesterday and hasn't turned off since. The clock on the dash isn't working any longer (seems to revert to about 6:15am every time the bike is turned off). Is this something I should be worried about?

Brammo Empulse / Wheel Bearing Falling Out
« on: May 05, 2015, 05:59:40 PM »
I'm starting a new thread on this, even though it's related to my last post. I just had my rear wheel bearings replaced after one of them failed. I suspect the new ones are going to fail, too.

I asked my dealer, and they recommended loctite for bearings. I'm not convinced, but I'll give it a shot. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Brammo Empulse / Brake Parts
« on: March 16, 2015, 11:03:17 AM »
I need to replace my rear brake pads and front rotors. Can anyone give me the appropriate Brembo part numbers, or equivalent bikes that I can use to search for parts? The info isn't in the manual, and Brammo isn't listed on Brembo's website.

My rear caliper is rubbing on the disc. I've never had to replace the rear pads on any of my other bikes, but I do ride the rear brake a lot more on the Empulse.

And I've dropped the front end off the stand once or twice leading to bent front rotors. They're not dangerous, but the pulsing is annoying. I had the same problem with my Duc. Having a stem-lift option would be great!

I'll be pulling it all apart tonight, but any help ahead of time would be great!

Brammo Empulse / It's COLD! (and associated challenges)
« on: December 17, 2014, 04:45:30 PM »
I'm pushing my luck up here in Chicago. Monday was a pretty nice day, so I road to work. And by nice I mean 40 degrees and raining. I chickened out yesterday as the forecast was calling for falling temperatures throughout the day, and snow on the commute home. It didn't snow. O-well.

But today it was nice again, as in not snowing and 20 degrees. So out comes the Empulse, and heated gear and snowmobile suit. I get to work after 17 miles, but my key won't come out. After about a minute of turning and pulling, I finally force it. I set my calendar to remind me to to turn on the parking lights to get the battery warming up a half an hour before I plan on leaving. That reminder hit about 15 minutes ago. To my surprise, the key goes in, but does not turn. Back up to the cube farm to ponder. None of my coworkers have WD-40 or rubbing alcohol, but I get a couple dabs of hand sanitizer on the key and head back down. After a minute, I finally get the key to turn. I'm not sure if it was the hand sanitizer, or the fact I was working my way through Brammo's phone tree, but it looks like I'll make it home under my own power. Hopefully there's no damage to the ignition switch!

I'll have to remember to shoot some WD-40 into the ignition if I ride in the rain immediately before the temps will drop below freezing. And maybe I'll get a few more weeks of riding!

Happy Holiday riding everyone!

Off Topic / Diamond Based Semiconductor for Smaller Chargers
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:20:58 AM »
http://www.anl.gov/articles/argonne-announces-new-licensing-agreement-akhan-semiconductor?utm_source=Argonne+Today&utm_campaign=e2e684005e-AT+11%2F21%2F14&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_91cdd2aa04-e2e684005e-237425181

I've been tangently working on this for a couple of months in a non-technical capacity, and it is one of the more exciting technologies I have seen come across my desk in the last couple of years. Basically if you were to make a whole 3KW charger out of this stuff, it would be about the size of an IPhone with no need for cooling. Same thing with motor controllers or anything that moves a lot of current and is heat-limited. The immediate path forward is to start swapping out silicon parts from high power electronics, and not make the whole compenent out of the expensive diamond material. But who knows how the technology will improve (or get worse) as it is scaled up for manufacturing. As more of this stuff is incorporated, components will get smaller and smaller.

Unfortunately I get the impression they are more interested in super computers than EV components, but the technology will trickle down. And since research super computers are spending a signficant amount of their processing power doing battery material modeling, we won't be completely left out!

Diamond based semiconductors can make high power electronics an order of magnitude smaller than the Silicon Carbide that will be in the next generation of high power electronics we'll see in EVs. I think there was a video on the forum somewhere that showed a 3wk Silcon Carbide charger for the Leaf next to the Leaf's stock charger, if you remember that.

Exciting times!

Off Topic / When is a Car is Fully Charged?
« on: August 07, 2014, 06:16:29 PM »
The i3 thread got me thinking that it would be nice to have a thread for how one would know when an EV is done charging and can be unplugged by someone else needing a charge. I've come across this a few times, and would really like to know. ChargePoint makes it obvious at the EVSE, but there are quite a few charging locations around me that do not give clear indications on whether power is flowing.

So post up type of vehicle, and how you know when it's fully charged.

Just became eligible  8)

I know I'm not the first, but with how brutal our winter was last year here in Chicago, I bet I won't be seeing any others for a while.

Absolutely no regrets so far.

Given Brammo's heritage, I thought I'd post this up.

Picture the Ariel Atom in your head. Not difficult, is it? The car's skeletal structure is its defining feature, and that work of engineering art unsurprisingly finds its way onto the company's new motorcycle, the Ariel Ace.

Quote
(CNN) -- A silent, nimble, two-wheeled killing machine.

That's what Pentagon researchers envision, now that they've greenlighted developing a hybrid motorcycle powered by two sources: an engine that burns several types of fuel and a stealthy, super-quiet electric motor.

Imagine an elite U.S. fighting force deployed in a mountainous region of Afghanistan, riding motorbikes that are nearly silent. The loudest sound is tires on dirt as they twist and turn down dried river beds and up narrow goat trails. When they launch their assault on a Taliban stronghold, the enemy is taken by surprise.

The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has tapped defense contractor Logos Technologies and motorcycle maker BRD to design the motorbike.

As a platform for the project, Logos is talking about BRD's 250-pound RedShift MX. Although the RedShift MX is totally electric, Logos wants to combine that with an engine that burns regular gasoline, as well as jet fuel and diesel. It's expected to have a range of 100 miles and make very little noise, even when the conventional engine is running.

A few technologies I've never heard of mentioned in here. No one claiming they've solved the energy storage problem, but it is fun to look at where we might be going in 5 to 10 years.
