I like the one scene where the office workers are walking by in the distance like these robots building one of the world's most sophisticated cars are no more notable than a typical atrium water fountain :)

The 2012 E1PC bikes are 14+ kWh. Rumor and speculation pegs the Mugen bike at ~20 kWh .. as large of a pack as the Honda Fit EV. Even if it's not quite that large, certainly it is massive and the bike is significantly larger than the MotoCzysz.

I recall one of the posted videos had a short pre-race interview with Michael Miller (Mugen rider). After bluntly correcting the announcer's glib comment that the race would be "great fun" :), he expressed concern about the race, saying that to win he had to carry a lot of speed through the corners (because of battery capacity limitations), and doing so on a heavy bike in wet conditions was giving him some concern.

I think this is an education and awareness issue more than anything. People know that when they smell gasoline leaking out of their cars, that there is some fire risk. I don't think the same thought immediately occurs to most people when it comes to EVs with physically damaged batteries.

I read that the National Fire Protection Agency in the US is offering classes for first responders on how to deal with EV issues in auto accidents (high voltage, fire risk). Other organizations may be doing the same.

I'm skeptical of the 200 mile range claims. I don't see that much room for batteries. With a full-body fairing, it's probably more aerodynamic than a standard bike, but you're running those gyros all the time, too. And speaking of gyros, I wonder how the various regulatory bodies will view this (helmet or m/c license required?).

But it's a cool idea, and I wish them the best.

You hear something like this in electric-car design, except it's in the form of trailers, not onboard energy. And it's in the form of a genset, not extra batteries.  Basically, imagine a Chevy Volt, except with the piston engine in a detachable trailer instead of under the hood.  For daily use, you leave the trailer at home, so no dead weight.  For long trips, you hitch it up, and presto, no range anxiety.

I'd be surprised if this would work in the general case, at least if you want to run continuously as long as you have petrol fuel. I got about 40-45 miles on my Zero at 70mph. Assuming a 9 kWh pack, that's about 14-16kW continuous power draw (and of course it will be more with a trailer). Generators that size weigh far more than 200 lbs. If you just want a range extender, say an extra 50 or 100 miles (and then you are stopping to charge regardless) then you can use a smaller genny, but it's only a partial solution at best; might as well tow extra batteries instead in this case.

I'd think cars would have the same problem. Perhaps some of the more sophisticated tech that has gone into e-vehicles could be employed in the genset*, but you'd need it on the ICE side as well for significant weight reduction. Also, you're paying a premium twice; once for the vehicle, and again for its auxiliary powerplant. Probably cheaper to put that tech into a better ICE for the car/bike itself.

(* For an example of the state of the art of the portable generator industry, they are just now using AC>DC>AC inverter designs that allow more efficient motor fuel usage, rather than running them at synchronous speed all the time.)

I'm not a follower of electric motorcycle racing (yet), so maybe someone can explain this all to me.

You have the eSuperStock class that includes stock (? mostly stock? what are the restrictions?) bikes. I  don't know if there are any homologation requirements -- surely Zero sells a lot more bikes than Lightning, and Brammo would have had to get a pass this year since the Empulse is brand-new.

In this class is a $14k bike with 9kWh and ~25hp (Zero S), a $19k bike with a 10-11kWh pack, ???hp and a transmission (Brammo Empulse, though I read somewhere that their race bikes shun the tranny in favor of higher-voltage motors), and a $39k bike with a 14kWh pack and 160hp (Lightning).

I know there aren't a lot of elmotos out there to race, but this hardly seems like fair competition (though, as someone commented, reliability can sometimes carry the day). It's like Joe Pesci vs. LeBron James in a little 1-on-1.

The problem with letting the monthly motorcycle magazines test the bike is that they like to take new models to the race track and then crash them. Brammo may not have enough Empulse R's right now for that kind of foolishness. 

Considering they crash at the track with experienced racers on board, I can understand Brammo's reluctance ;)

flar, thanks for the pics. Looks like that Lytro did a good job in what couldn't have been great lighting.

They do look cool, and maybe are a few ticks faster to 60, but I don't think I'll be trading my Zero for one. For cool looks or raw speed I could buy a ZX-14R or maybe even a BMW S1000RR for less than the Brammo. I'd happily test ride one though :)

I hope they do well, though, as I do Zero, to show the world that e-bikes are a viable market, and therefore encourage further development. I just hope their loyal fans and waiting list members finally get some satisfaction.

This article and some of the comments had me laughing. First, CA lawmakers get taught (note that I didn't say "learn") that legislating carmakers to make vehicles that apparently aren't making money for them doesn't work. Then, in the comments, I read that Nissan Leaf dealers are marking them up from MSRP. Way to soften that electric price premuim for consumers. Jeez.

I'm like you, Gavin. I was able to walk into a dealership and buy an electric bike off the showroom floor. I paid a premium over an equivalent ICE bike, but not an unreasonable one (and I didn't need subsidies to convince me). And it's actually fun to ride. No wonder Zero's doing well this year. I suspect Brammo will too with the new Empulse.

I'd expect it to last a good while, as it has only one moving part, no brushes, etc. If it's totally-enclosed (i.e., liquid-cooled), that should help even more. The fact that the motor on my Zero is air-cooled and somewhat open to the elements is the only thing I think would shorten its life.

On the other hand, its appearance allows me to almost get away with telling people I pirated it from my washing machine :)
