Brammo Empulse / IT LIVES
« on: June 27, 2015, 11:31:50 PM »
Hello everybody --

Welp, this post marks:
  • the continuation of the teaser in this thread,
  • my third annual Shaming Of You All For Not Showing Up To Refuel, and
  • the celebration of Empulse R #35 returning to life amongst us once again, with barnstorming panache and style

Note that for what follows, I can claim very little credit.  My good friend and housemate Conan is far more experienced in the ways of hacking apart and putting back together motorcycles than I am.  For the most part, my participation in this project was limited to photography, labeling and cataloguing the various zillion disassembled parts into ziploc bags, purchasing and obtaining replacement parts, cleaning 20,000 miles' worth of grime from the original parts, and providing a lot of beer.  And the obstinate will to get this thing back together.

The shape in which it was returned to me.  Note the hilarious mud all over everything -- there was a boatload of additional damage inflicted by the tow company.  Also note that the bike is sort of being held together by a ratchet strap.

Taking things apart.

Taking more things apart.  Here you can start to get a good idea of how in nearly two pieces the frame is.

"Never dropped, always garaged"

And now we go from this . . .

To THIS.  In my mind it would have been a sin to possess a bare frame of something and not powdercoat it some absurd color.  It is hard to capture properly, but it is an idiotically sparkly pearl white.

Putting the batteries back in.

With the OEM black swingarm and subframe back on, I think the contrast with the white frame is quite striking!

I may or may not have cackled like a mad scientist when it actually turned on for the first time in reassembled (reanimated?) form.

AND THE PAYOFF.  Also note that because I'm probably not going to be commuting on it anymore (see my previous posts re: ABS), figured I'd set it up for more track-ish duty.  So a set of clip-ons and some hilarious rearsets hewn from some giant blocks of aluminum.  Thought about getting those Woodcraft ones, but they're way too expensive, and I wanted to keep the kickstand.

PAYOFF PART II: Conan had a set of Honda RC211V replica track fairings sitting around, so some hacksaw butchery later . . . we have a faired Empulse R!  This was taken yesterday, at Laguna Seca, where I was the only Empulse customer to show up.  In fact I was one of only two Brammos there -- the Brammo team proper was apparently spread apart at Pikes Peak and/or still in Europe, so the entire Brammo race team this time around was the very famous and exotic Brian, riding his personal project Empulse TTX.  There was an absolute sea of Zeros (at least a dozen of them), and a totally disappointing lack of any ridiculous home-built bike contraptions this year.

And to thank my buddy for his intrepid help with this over the last few months, I decided it would be only appropriate for him to be the one to take it out and put it through its paces at Refuel -- and plus he'd never ridden Laguna before, so was even more excited about it.  I did miss actually participating, but it was fun to watch, and totally glorious to see the bike reborn and getting thrown around the track.  He ended up 5th overall with a 1:59 or so -- not bad for a first outing!  For reference: I was a 2:10, and Shelina on the TTX was about a 1:51.  In fact . . . now that I look at the times from the past couple years, I am pretty sure that's the fastest an Empulse R has gone around that track.

And there it is.  The bike has returned to life, albeit still in a sort of registration limbo.  I have a salvage title, but still need to get it re-certified as road legal.  The RC211V fairings actually do have an upper portion with a headlight kit, so perhaps we might see a road-going faired Empulse?  I have ridden it, and the clip-ons and rearsets are surprisingly comfortable.

Now Polaris just needs to get off their ass and sell me a new ABS model, and I will be the ultimate electric motorcycling gentleman of leisure, with an Empulse for the track and an Empulse for the street.

Nonetheless . . . I am back!!

Off Topic / Breaks my heart to write this, but

Well the good news is: Bill, you will catch up and claim the mileage crown.

The bad news is: Empulse R #35 has ceased to be of this world.

A taxi made an . . . interesting U-turn in front of me in downtown SF.  Right when he did, and right when I started braking, I was right on top of a mess of metal plates and cable car tracks.  Front locked up, I managed (barely) to avoid the taxi, but front tucked itself and the bike slid directly into a curb and cracked its frame.

I am 100% fine (hooooraaaaay Aerostich), but my valiant friend is no more.

I desperately miss the TIE fighter whine, but that accident honestly freaked me out enough with regard to having ABS on my daily war chariot commuter that I will be waiting (with bated breath) for an Empulse ABS model.  Which will likely be coming fairly soon, what with Europe and 2016 and whatnot.  The minute I can buy one of those, I will be rejoining you all.  In the meantime, I'll be watching from the sidelines and cheering you on.  And likely still showing up to track events to harass the race team!

Unless maaaaybe I can manage to find a broken Empulse somewhere to fix up and fling around a track . . . . ?!?

Trip Reports / Thunderhill WEST
« on: August 05, 2014, 03:47:14 PM »
I realized I forgot to post up here my experience at the brand spanking new Thunderhill section!  I went out for a 4theriders charity track day.  This was the first time that motorcycles had ever been run on just the west course by itself as a circuit.

Getting more comfortable leaning the bike over!  Haha gotta get some rearsets or I am probably going to lose another shifter peg.

Also the new track is AWESOME.  It's way tighter and more technical than the other Thunderhill (east? old-school? classic?).  Lots of hairpins, not a huge straight -- perfect for the Empulse!  I heard a lot of riders wishing they'd brought a 250 or some smaller/lighter bike.

The shining expanse of brand new untouched blacktop was beautiful.  Only downside was it was HOT.  It was 105 or higher the whole day.  I don't think I had regen at any point after the first couple laps.  At one point I thought I'd melted my Clipper Creek LCS-25 because it was flashing double-red fault lights and wouldn't charge the bike.  I put it under some shade for awhile and it eventually recovered though.

Anyway, tons of fun.  Also it has been interesting seeing the effects that the Brammo race team has had on electric acceptance.  When I started doing trackdays last year, everybody was bamboozled and didn't know what to make of it when I showed up with the Empulse.  Now that the team has been mixing it up in AFM gasbike races though, everybody was pretty much like 'oh yeah Brammo! they're cool.'  People still definitely come over to talk to me about the bike, but it has been more and more out of a sense of curiosity about what it's like to own and/or ride one, as opposed to "WTF is that???" or suspicion or dismissal or whatever.

Granted, it's not as though the average track rat/AFM racer is exactly the target market Brammo is looking for -- but there's gotta be some ripple effect there eventually.

Off Topic / Welp, I officially dislike the BMW i3
« on: August 05, 2014, 11:45:24 AM »
I park in a very busy garage in downtown SF next to my office -- the charging spots are nearly always full up (there are at least a dozen Teslas that park there regularly).  I can usually grab juice if I need to, because invariably somebody will be parked in a spot and has finished charging.  This is a problem for car owners, because now the spot is blocked, but haha as everybody here knows: not a problem for a bike!  I usually just slot myself between the wall and the parking spot and unplug them.

However, enter the i3.  See that little metal nubbin?

Apparently, the BMW i3 has a permanent lock on the J1772 connector while charging, even once charging is complete.  And so of course now there is somebody in an i3 who has been parked in a charging spot overnight, finished charging about 16 hours ago, and is now preventing anybody (bike or car) from using the station.

This is actually a thing?  Who in the hell at BMW thought that would be a good idea?

Congratulations Chevy Volt, setting off your alarm at charger unplug has been dethroned as the emperor of Most Annoying EV Charging Implementation Decisions.

Off Topic / Have we had a gear thread yet?
« on: May 11, 2014, 09:25:44 PM »
Well, I had my first actual real motorcycle accident on Friday!  NOT on the Empulse (thank goodness; I would've had to start my mileage all over!) but on my GSXR.  A dude merged left into me on the freeway (slow traffic, ~30 mph), knocked my handlebar and front brake, and sent me tankslapping into the back of a car in front of me.  I basically did a somersault off the bike and into the car, hitting it upside down, and then falling onto the pavement.  Aaaand other than a tender shoulder, I am no worse for wear!  I even went to the hospital as a precaution, and they gave me an all-clear.

So after a day of reflection and celebration of still being fully-functional, I've been thinking about choices in riding, gear, etc quite a bit.  If anybody wants gear recommendations, here's what I was wearing at the time and thus endorse 100%.  I got up and walked away, and I can't think of higher praise for a set of gear.

  • Shoei RF1100
  • Aerostich.  The one and only.  I have the optional hip armor, which likely helped as I landed on my side.
  • Forcefield Pro Sub 4 -- based on the fact that I hit a car with my back and feel fine, this thing did a damn good job.
  • Helimot B11s.  Best gloves I've ever worn.
  • Dainese TRQ Tours: they actually have external armor and manage to not look like moon-boots.  Also waterproof!

The only thing that looks like it will need replacing is the helmet; there's a decent-size ding on the back of it.  Probably go to the RF1200, as it's been getting great reviews and I know the Shoei shape fits my head.  Covered by insurance, too!

The GSXR, however, was not so lucky.  The frame is basically cracked in half.  Now to find another gas bike!

In any case -- anybody had a serious scrape with accompanying gear recommendations and/or condemnations?

Off Topic / Swivit Gopro mount
« on: April 11, 2014, 06:39:39 PM »
So I just learned of a kickstarter campaign currently going on for what looks like a neat little swivelly mount thing for Gopro cameras.  I backed the project as I actually would like something like that; the stock Gopro mounts certainly leave something to be desired.

In any case, what I found almost more interesting was a couple minutes into the video!

Anybody here?  (PS if so haha you should get your tail section swap done . . . . )

Trip Reports / Overnight trip . . .

 . . . complete with *gasp* LUGGAGE!

Braving the piercing California March weather for a lightweight overnight trip.  I decided I liked my big Kriega US30 so much that I picked up its little brother the US10.  I actually got it with the tank bag adapter for use on my gas bike for trips, but I thought in this case "hey, it holds a toothbrush, a change of clothes, and a tire patch kit . . . why not?"

Birthdammo?
EmpulseaƱera?

I've had this ridiculous thing for an entire year now.  I can confirm: after 13,000+ miles, it still makes me grin like a total idiot.

In celebration (and also as an excuse to go out and ride aimlessly around) we took some pictures!

Brammo Empulse / 21st century motorcycle maintenance problems
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:54:23 PM »
Protip: while removing your USB log drive, don't choose that particular moment to get butterfingers.

Last night right before going to bed I was like "hey oh yeah I had some errors today, I should get those logs and send them Brammo's way."  I pull off the rubber cover and take the drive out, at which point it proceeds to immediately squirt out of my fingers, perform a couple perfect pachinko-like bounces, and plummet down a tiny crack into the deepest unknown bowels of the bike.

It's . . . . somewhere in THERE.  My only hope is that it fell all the way through to the bottom; I'm going to take the belly pan off tonight and find out.  If not, I'm going to have to start taking more exciting-looking things apart.

Brammo Empulse / Empulse accident(?) on the bay bridge this morning?
« on: January 06, 2014, 04:05:17 PM »
This morning on the commute in there was a small traffic snarl in the rightmost lane of the bridge, with a couple tow trucks and a CHP.  Imagine my surprise when I look over and see a black Empulse R sitting between the tow trucks!

I wish I could've stopped . . . rider and bike both looked ok though, thankfully.  Didn't entirely look like an accident -- technical difficulties, maybe?  Was it anyone here?

Trip Reports / more track time!
« on: November 25, 2013, 05:32:05 PM »
This past weekend I got to spend both days up at the glorious Thunderhill, in a track excursion with a couple friends.  As I was unloading the Empulse from the truck, who rolls in but the full battle-dressed Brammo race team with a small flotilla of bikes!  They were doing some testing and happened to be there; I'm pretty sure at this point they're probably convinced that I am stalking them at trackdays.

Two days of throwing the Empulse and my housemate's Triumph around the track.  The brutal northern California winter was about 65 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.  Absolutely awesome.  I moved up to B group for this one, and while I was still hilariously ever so slow, I actually managed to pass a couple of people.  I am getting a lot more comfortable on the bike, and can reliably move my body around in the correct directions now going into corners.  Also, did not crash!  The bike did super well -- even though it definitely gets its doors blown off on the straights by the bigger bikes, I'm definitely not good enough yet to take advantage of all its speed and handling in corners.  It's a really good learning tool, as well.  Riding gas bikes as a comparison is just hilarious because you have all these ridiculous explosions and vibration getting in the way of surface feedback.  Although also fun, because explosions.

Also, watching mssrs. Bostrom and Turpin gracefully tear apart the field was very entertaining.  There were a bunch of other fast guys (AFM racers, etc) there, and it made for an excellent show.

I don't have any video as the Gopro seems to have given up the ghost (time for a new Hero3 on holiday sale I suppose!), but there was a track photographer there and there are a bunch of fun shots that you can get the gist of through the watermark:

http://gotbluemilk.com/web131123/BRAMMO/index.html
http://gotbluemilk.com/web131124/BRAMMO/index.html

Also haha a bunch of shots of Eric on a random Ninja, as he was also teaching a class that weekend.  I am of course in the ever-lovely combination of yellow helmet and salmon/black/sparkly sparkly silver leathers.

Seriously, you guys should sign up for Refuel next year.  It leads to all kinds of wonderfully terrible life decisions.

Well, looks like a successful commute!  Plus I got to stop by Scuderia and harass them, so always a good time.
