Title: Electric is gaining on ICE...
Post by: FreepZ on August 15, 2012, 01:29:32 PM
Autoblog has an article about Monster Tajima raceing up Pikes Peak in an EV (http://green.autoblog.com/2012/08/15/watch-monster-tajimas-new-electric-race-car-whir-up-pikes-peak/).

Looking at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikes_Peak_International_Hill_Climb#Current_records), the current overall record fastest climb is 9:46.164 in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Tajima was trying to beat his record of 9:51.278 in an all electric hill climb car (pictured at the top). Unfortunately, technical issues prevented him from doing that this year. The fastest electric ended up being Fumio Nutahara with a time of 10:15.380 in a Toyota P002 EV racer.

I predict that, eventually, the fastest machine up to the top of Pikes Peak will be an all electric vehicle. And one day there will be a special category for "fastest Internal Combustion Engine climb", just to give ICE's a chance to win something. ;) (Okay, perhaps I'm reaching a bit there, but I think that it will eventually happen!)

Electric has an advantage over ICE in this hill climb and that is that it is not affected by the lower oxygen level as it reaches higher.
The ICE will loose power but the electric car will stay at the same performance!
