BrammoBrian posts an Instagram pic to Lockerz :(
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:50:42 PM »

Just in case you're reading, Brian, here's why I put the sad face in the post title:
1. Lockerz does not let me save the images, even when I dig deep in the html to find it.  So, to post the image here on the forum, I have to:
a. take a screenshot
b. save the screenshot to my computer
c. upload the image to my brammofan.com wordpress site
d. embed the image into the forum.
The very unfortunate side effect of this is that the image is extremely low resolution.
2. Instagram.  Just...yuck.  You call yourself a designer and yet you're using Instagram? I was going to tell you why, but then I googled "instagram sucks" and this guy said it better than me: http://www.elephantjournal.com/2012/07/why-instagram-sucks-ryan-pinkard/

So... what is the preferable method of posting your photos? Here's my Best to worst list (assuming that you're sharing these directly from your smartphone):
1. Email the full resolution, un-filtered image to me.  (Figured I'd shoot for the stars).
2. Share the photo using your twitter client (or hootsuite - which is what I use).  It keeps the full res image online for easy linking.
3. Share the photo using flickr, googleplus, picasa, or Facebook.

I'll still probably save most of the images to my brammofan wordpress, but that's my safe repository of images that won't be deleted (I hope) or that the URL won't change.

Anyway - nice photo of the Empulse and yes, we're all jealous.
 ;D

Try this:

Code: [Select]

I don't know if a higher resolution version is available.

That is not a valid .jpg or .png image file.  It downloads a gobbledygook file to your computer.

gnu filetool says:

[florian@frankenstein Downloads]$ file x2_f00fe65
x2_f00fe65: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01

I guess firefoxy gets the mime-type wrong. Stupid fox :)

sidenote: instagramm is shit, I agree.

+1 for file

The fileextension is missing, but the downloaded file is in fact a jpeg image.

Ahhh. So if you manually add the .jpg to the filename, it works.

Okay - I was wrong about digging into the html.
HOWEVER, I still contend that it's difficult to extract the image (especially on a mobile device) and still, ugh, Instagram.

Hunh... The funny thing is that that's not an instagram photo and I did originally share it through my twitter service (I use Echofon on the iPhone 4).  Maybe I should use a different service?  I had no idea I was causing so much frustration, but glad to see that people actually pay attention to what I post! ;)

I assume the instagram comment is related to the filters applied. I use Photo+ to do a bit of post to the photo and then apply one of the standard filters.  I thought it made the photo a bit more interesting, but I can tell there's a backlash brewing against this type of thing.  I'll try to keep the photos a bit more true to the original in the future.  Thanks for the feedback!

One day, soon, I'll be able to take my own photographs with my own camera of my own Empulse. Then all that debate about image filters and what not will be moot! (At least for me :P)

That looks very similar to the filter I use for photographing in the evening and morning "golden light" when I take pictures of my cars that are bright red.  It does a good job of color correcting the red back to what it should look like if the light weren't golden light.  Without the filter, my camera tries to auto-color correct all the colors to compensate for the golden light, and reds come out sort of orange.

There really isn't any option for shooting shots of red vehicles at dawn or dusk besides using some kind of filter.
