Hero Moto Corp iON Concept
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:20:44 PM »
An article on page 10 of the May issue of Motorcycle Consumer News reports that the (Indian) Hero MotoCorp has introduced an electric motorcycle concept.  They seem to have taken everything in the electric propulsion and futuristic-vehicle news and thrown it at the bike to see if it sticks.  (From a look at the computer-generated picture I would say it doesn't have enough room on the bike for all of this stuff to stick to.   ::)  ). Here is what the article has to say:

Hero has been developing motorcycles fueled by both gasoline and diesel, but electricity has certainly not been overlooked, as the prototype iON reveals. Very futuristic, the concept is meant to be powered by Lithium-Air batteries with a Hydrogen-Fuel Cell range extender and will utilize super capacitors for acceleration and braking.  The hubless, see-through wheels are driven by electric traction motors that double as brakes, and active suspension controls the ride. Control is by finger-tip pressure sent from the handlebar grips for power, braking and steering, and electronic traffic sensors provide collision avoidance, while computers manage active suspension damping.
current bikes: 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2007 BMW R1200R, 2005 Triumph T-100 Bonneville, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

Here you go:

From Cycle World:
Quote
Now for some far-out future stuff –iON. Just about all the buzzwords apply: The bike has dramatic hubless wheels pioneered by Franco Sbarro, two-wheel steering, Vehicle Situational Awareness. Do I hear laughter? Stop! Things we considered incredible just a short time ago are now routine. So chances are, if you can dream it, someone, somewhere, is making pilot chips for it. Just two years ago, Leap was a prototype, too.
Hmm, the claimed power source—a lightweight lithium-air battery—was described a year ago by IBM as requiring seven more years of basic science before it can translate into engineering prototype form. Traffic sensors? Definitely. Read the auto magazines; they’re happening. And because it’s all going on chips, it will be small enough that every pair of roller skates will cry out for it. Fuel-cell range extender? It’s no weirder than the Honda Buck Rogers bike of a few years ago, which was to have a superconducting drive motor. iON is a thought experiment.

More details here, including a 100 mph top speed and a 186 mile range. (I won't hold my breath.):
