Yesterday, news reports stated that the U.S. government says that the current California vehicle license document sucks as a valid ID for flying on a commercial airliner. In order to fly from any U.S. airport after 2020, a new CA DMV license or ID card will be required. These licenses will begin to be issued by DMV offices starting January 22, 2018. In order to obtain this new "Federal-style" license or ID document, you will have to visit the DMV (plan to stand in line for hours) and present both your birth certificate and your Social Security card. However, you will still be able to fly with the old-style drivers license if you have a valid and current passport.
