New 21kwh Battery Energicas!
« on: January 22, 2020, 06:48:34 AM »
Got an email from Energica that there is an open house event at Calmoto Livermore and went there to check them out.  They had pre production models of the new 21.5kwh powered Energica bikes on display.  They let you demo ride last year's models.  Finally got my chance to ride an Ego and Eva Esse Esse 9.

Luckily there is a chargepoint station across the street that was free and unrestricted as Livermore is 30miles from San Jose I'd be cutting it close round trip.

I also attended the event last Saturday.  Here are three photos that I took that day.

Ego with the MotoE livery!  Looks pretty sweet.  I have the say the red one was catches the eye more and probably the police's eye.  This machine was built just for going fast!

I got to ride this one also!

Too many sponsor stickers for my taste.   ;)

I rode the Ego a little over a year ago.  Really a nice bike, quality build.  However, the weight of the bike and how it is distributed made it a non starter for me.  I watched the salesman trying to get it out of the showroom and when I tried to lift it off the kickstand I thought it had been superglued to the pavement!  Once upright (and as long as you didn't let it lean at all) it was manageable.  When going around a corner, you can feel that the CG is very high on the bike as you lean into the turn.  To me, it took a lot of effort to keep the bike on the track you wanted through the turn without manhandling it or using a lot of body english.  I guess the other Energica's with the higher bars and more upright seating position are easier to handle according to those who have ridden them.  The low bars on the Ego offered limited leverage to do much with the bike at low speed.  At higher speeds it was at least driveable.  I settled on a Zero SR/F instead which was nearly 100 pounds lighter with a lower CG which works out better for me and how I ride.  Still have the Victory Empulse TT in the garage so I have a good choice when I want to ride.

I notice the top-heavy feel on my 2018 Zero S with the Power Tank installed.  That additional 42 pounds located where the gas tank would be on an ICE motorcycle really becomes noticeable when pulling the bike off of the side stand and when initiating a turn into a corner or through a series of S-curves. You really have to take a hit on back road handling when opting for that additional 20% worth of range.

BTW, I weighed my bike on a digital scale and it weighed 452 pounds, with a windshield and luggage rack installed. When the 2020 Energicas were being discussed I overheard the salesman say that the bikes weighed around 630 pounds.

Wow 452lbs is pretty light.  I weigh my Empulse and it's around 475lbs.  But it's like a featherweight compared to the Energicas.  It's definitely nice to have that reverse feature on them.

I did ride the SS9 and it feels a lot easier to turn.  The weight disappears when it starts moving.  I remember I felt so tired after riding the Ego just holding on for dear life and getting it to turn.  To think it was at about 30% and it could have been faster!

Eva Esse Esse 9.  I have to say this is the one I would buy after riding it.  It felt much more easier to ride and more relaxing.  It felt like riding an Empulse but a little bigger and more powerful.

I love all the little machined bits on the bike.  You can tell it's more than a machine it's more like a work of art.

Here is the brochure for the new models

The Ego being charged.  Energica uses clippercreek EVSE similar to what the Empulse came with.  Too bad they don't have a DC Fastcharger because it took forever to charge them up for the demo rides.

Also got to demoride the SS9.  My favorite one.
