Gear Question
« on: August 22, 2012, 11:23:07 PM »
While reading over at the Empulse treads, people start talking about what gear they use.

Me being new to motorcycle riding, I have been browsing helmets, jackets, and gloves.
I read some reviews on Hell for Leather and have been looking at these items.

Icon Alliance Rat Helmet
http://www.rideicon.com/product_details.jsp?category=3427&id=12508

Icon One Thousand Chapter Jacket
http://www.rideicon.com/product_details.jsp?category=3428&id=13465

Icon One Thousand Rimfire Gloves
http://www.rideicon.com/product_details.jsp?category=3431&id=13473

I don't plan on doing anything crazy, but living in the Houston area where people can't see me in a dark color car during the day or in a white car at night..... you get it.

So, are these okay? Too little? Too much?

Edit: I liked the Rat, till I saw the back... I liked the two tone with red pinstriping, just not the skull and crossbones on the back.

I always go buy a sheet of reflectors (http://www.rei.com/product/680649/nathan-cycling-stick-ons) to add to a new helmet.  I add them so at least one is visible from all angles, including the very top of it.  I want to be visible even if I get separated from the bike at night.

Always ride like people cant see or hear you, because trust me, they arent looking or listening anyway... People will always try to make the lamest excuses if they hit you... oh the stories I have heard.

Anyway, that's some sweet gear Sorian! It all matches nicely too... especially with a red Empulse. i think the skull n crossbones is pretty much Icon's thing and much of their gear will have similar graphics. I can see the lighter colored gloves getting dirty quickly though.

The reflective stick-ons are a damn good idea. I may get those or something like this myself: http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Reflective-Safety-Tape-Adhesive/dp/B000NPNXP6

I think you might want some boots too, I really and wholeheartedly recommed "Daytona Burdit" - really great boots. And if you plan to get your knee to the ground, a nice pair of trousers may come in handy, too. I got myself some from vanucci, acceptable stuff for a great price.
And I personally think shopping online for stuff you have to try on isnt the best idea, go in a real shop and try it out :) (i found my boots after 4 hours of trying and swearing my ass off)

Thanks Skuzzle, I will make that a priority.

Thanks EB, I saw most of the clothing from HfL. Yea, I am leaning to getting red empulse. They have a black pair, I just posted the main page for the gear. I'm just not a fan for the skull and crossbones on the helmet. I am waiting on when it becomes my time to hear the excuses when it happens to me, I am also thinking of adding a Contour or GoPro camera as evidence collection for just that reason.

Thanks for the suggestions oml, I forgot about boots and I don't know if I will be comfortable getting a knee down.

This is cool stuff too...
I plan on using the MagicBlack reflective rim shots and a MagicBlack flame kit on the underside of the bike. You can also get several designs in the MagicBlack reflective. I have the MagicBlack Flames helmet kit on my black HJC IS-Max bluetooth helmet, it looks great 'cause its not very noticeable until light hits it then it can be seen for almost a mile.
