Rust on Battery Brackets
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:36:33 PM »
I hate rust on a motorcycle.

The first two (at the front) of the upper tier of battery support brackets are showing tiny spots. My magnet tells me they're ferrous. My eyes tell me they're not stainless steel. They appear to be powder-coated or some other process that leaves a matte finish.

My Empulse has been on the road every day for the last 10 months (8K miles) and I live near the ocean.

I went over the areas with fine steel wool and didn't see much improvement, as I would, for example on a chrome muffler, so I decided to try to hold things where they are now.

Using 7 double-ended Q-tips, I applied a coat of EEZOX synthetic gun care solution, which got high marks on internet forums. I chose it because it dries without leaving an oily film. I figure I'll do this at each transmission oil change.

After using a fresh Q-tip for each bracket, I wiped the used ends on various plated fasteners around the bike as a small measure to keep the sea from swallowing my bike.
