Apparently using an electric motor for propulsion gives a designer a lot more flexibility in the design of the vehicle, plus they don't have to use another manufacturer's IC engine, which might not be approved by the company. Whereas off-the-shelf electric motors and batteries pretty much don't come with strings attached. (Zero power trains likely excepted, of course. But they seem pretty flexible when supplying some small startup companies with their equipment.)
