Motorcycle License granted to Brammo Owner in MA
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:33:25 AM »
I just took my riding test for my motorcycle license and I passed the test using my Enertia!

The registry official (Registry of Motor Vehicles) was impressed by the Enertia and he was amazed at the lack of sound. We talked a lot about the Enertia's specifications and the Brammo company before and after the test. It was the first electric motorcycle he had seen in person. I talked to a bunch of other people who were waiting with me at the Registry this morning.

I had to do two sets of circles in both directions, two sets of figure eights in both directions, U turns, hand signals while riding, and a safety check on the Enertia. There were a few other minor tests, but I have already forgotten about them.

I took one day of a two-day MSF course this summer, so I needed to pass the riding test in my state.

Good luck to those of you who will be taking the motorcycle riding test soon.

Congratulations!  I guess they didn't count your inability to identify the clutch lever as an error.

I need to take my test in the next couple of months.

Good to hear. Still wondering how the California DMV will react.

Thanks. It would not suprise me if the lack of a clutch lever would cause some controversy, but as luck would have it, it did not matter.

The license test requirements are somewhat vague in my state of what needs to be done. I practiced based on the CA standard for the DMV test; which seems more difficult.

I hope the CA DMV does a better job with electric motorcycles on riding tests than some of the registration issues I have heard about.

The only CA DMV issues I know of are due to the Best Buy side...basically they have to learn how to do the paperwork right. In my case it was the first one they had done, so somewhat understandable. The main issue with CA DMV is that once you have errors things can get a little lost, but that might mostly be the Best Buy side as well.

I guess it doesn't really matter that the electric bikes
don't have gears and a clutch, because you can take your
test on a scooter and you will still  get the same motorcycle
license. They see any two wheeled vehicle as a motorcycle,at least
that is what I have been told.

I'm not so certain that this is correct. The California DMV handbook on motorcycles says on page three, "NOTE: A motorized scooter may not be used to take a Class M1 or M2 skills test."

I actually spoke to one of the examiners at the Santa Monica DMV and he did not see an issue as it is a M1 required Licence to ride it.
