H-D wants to hardwire you
« on: February 02, 2021, 05:46:40 PM »
First they were going to Rewire and now they want to Hardwire.  ::) Here is the latest news regarding H-D's Hardwire marketing plan. As usual you will need to scroll down the page to find their EV plan, which seems to me to be given the Buell treatment so as to keep electric motorcycles at an arms-length distance from their ICE V-twin market:  https://www.motorcycle.com/mini-features/harley-davidson-reveals-the-hardwire-plan.html
current bikes: 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2007 BMW R1200R, 2005 Triumph T-100 Bonneville, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

H-D says they are supporting the future of electric motorcycles by spinning them off into a separate company. Now that is how you support a new technology.   ::)

I think what HD needs to do is create a separate company and have them build affordable motorcycles.

It appears that you won't be seeing the H-D LiveWire electric motorcycle in the established Big Twin dealerships as part of their Hardwire plan. H-D plans to establish their electric motorcycle models in new and dedicated dealerships with a new brand name. That should help kill them off and keep the environmentalists out of the Faithful's sight.  ::)  The new brand will be hitting the streets on July 8.

This is an interesting approach.  Is it better to have the new electric bikes associated with the legacy brand, or give the product line its own identity?  Time will tell.

The electric motorcycle scene is going to get interesting this year with the arrival of more affordable bikes.

I guess they want to separate the brands so they can attract like minded riders.  Or they can just end the business if it doesn't work.  Kinda like Toyota and Scion I guess.  Or Buell.  They better get workin to crank out those electric bikes then, they only got one.  The white Livewire looks nice =)

Speaking of affordable I saw a used Livewire for sale in Livermore on CL for less than $20k, not enough to get me to bite but it's better than $30k.

I plan on visiting Calmoto in Livermore tomorrow. If the LW is there I will check it out.

My concern for the H-D branding plan is that the cost of setting up a dedicated dealership from scratch is very expensive. It just won't work unless H-D bankrolls the entire operation from start to finish, including operating costs. Financially, it would be a lot better for them to set aside a specific area in established H-D dealerships to market their electric models and have dedicated salespeople, parts staff and technicians that would provide customer service for the electric bikes. Trying to develop stand-alone EV dealerships, especially when the market for electric motorcycles is so small right now, sounds like a recipe for financial failure. And you know how the H-D board hates financial failure.  ;)

Finally, a few established motorcycle manufacturers, like Yamaha with their Star cruiser brand, have tried to create separate premium or unique sub-brands and I don't believe that has ever worked out in the long-run.
