BMW's forever chain
« on: August 28, 2020, 09:14:01 AM »
BMW has come up with a maintenance-free chain that is supposed to last forever. However, they don't mention what the life of drive sprockets will be.  ::) No word yet what a replacement chain will cost if you have to replace it, though. My guess is that it will cost as much as an engagement ring.  :o Here is the story:  https://www.mcnews.com.au/bmw-making-big-claims-for-new-maintenance-free-chain/
current bikes: 2018 16.6 kWh Zero S, 2011 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Classic, 2009 BMW F650GS, 2007 BMW R1200R, 2005 Triumph T-100 Bonneville, 2002 Yamaha FZ1 and a 1978 Honda Kick 'N Go Senior.

oh yeah haha I read that, its like made of diamonds or something.  Would like to try that out on my DR650, no chain maintenance after a long day of adventure riding more time to relax at the campground.  =)  I'll drag that through the mud, dirts, sands and see how it holds up =P.  One thing for sure they don't make forever sprockets so I'd imagine you're still going to have to adjust the slack.

I wonder how much diamond-coated sprockets would cost, especially when bought from a BMW dealer?  :o

Hmm... they claim a drastically reduced coefficient of friction due to the coating. It that's true, then maybe the sprocket life would also benefit?

I'm willing to give it a preliminary rating somewhere above snake oil, based on my experience with using diamond-surfaced sharpening "stones", carbide-tipped saw blades, and the amazing life that cylinder coatings yield in modern engines, along with the innovations known to have come out of BMW and German engineering.
