Twin motor
« on: May 05, 2011, 04:23:51 AM »
I have been scrutinising pictures of twin motor electric racing bikes, trying to work out why they have 2 ??

Does one take over when the other gets hot ? or do they both work together ?

thanks

I have seen electric motorcycle builds where the two motors work together.

The Roehr eSuperbike has 2 motors working together:

A bit ugly and pricy though... 200lb/ft torque!

Another example of twin motors is the White Zombie street legal electric drag car. It uses 2 8 inch motors coupled one behind the other with a series/parallel switch over that changes how the motors recieve their voltage. Ends up with a 1970 or 72 Datsun doing a <12 second quarter mile. Pretty impressive watching it clean the clock of corvettes, bmw's, and nearly everything else out there. He's really open about how it works. Another is a Pinto out of Alaska called Crazy Horse. Ultimately running 2 motors or more produces twice the torque but does use a lot more battery. Great for getting speed, lousy for range.

The Black Current, an electric Beetle that beat a Tesla last year and set a record this year in the 1/4 mile at 9.5 seconds, is a twin motor.

SoMe info from last year before the sub 10 sec runs...

Same race, different view.

World record run, 9.5second 1/4 mile at 135mph.

:oThat thing's crazy off the line! I need to research this one and see what went into building it. Time to google.

Twin motors are often used in motorsports due to the lack of availability of single motors with suitable power / weight / packaging characteristics. They can also be used to drive front/rear axles without a center differential, or to drive two rear wheels without a rear differential. They also allow for more modular designs - think a single motor for lower power / commuter applications, two motors for sport / racing applications.
