I know that electric BMWs have been brought up several times already, so I'm not sure if this is somewhat old news, but it was the first time I saw the info on Gizmag, so I figured it was worth a post.

BMW has finally shown their latest e-scooter concept version at the Frankfurt motorcycle show. The scooter looks much different than the last dazzle-camouflaged version that was shown being tested in a video this summer. Apparently, BMW let the designers pen the official press release, as it contains a lot of information about the styling and design and not too much about technical specifications, other than what we already know. Operating voltage is above 60 volts, range is 60 miles and the scooter is claimed to be able to be charged up from the typical home wall outlet and be fully recharged in only 3 hours.  It is not clear to me from the press release if this is just another design study or an actual  production vehicle. I think they did a decent job on the design. It looks modern and techy, but not too flashy. Definitely a city/suburban commute vehicle to my eye.

not bad...i like the original design a bit more...but this one grows on you slowly...i like the open back wheel...i like the simple handlebar/speedo. good for the city, but no real storage.

they should work on range a bit, but again 60 should be fine as a city ride.

it would be nice if there was a bit more meat/details...and production dates....though we all know how production dates go :(

though i do question the slick tires on an off road vehicle...

no lights = not road legal...

Here is another report about the BMW e-scooter. After checking out the first video featuring a girl  ;D, you can then watch the second video (perhaps more informative) featuring David Robb, BMW's chief motorcycle designer, explaining the features of their new electric motor scooter. I found it interesting that they have installed a fan, just like Zero, to cool the motor. But they made their fan a lot cuter than than the one on the Zero. See it here:

That's a very nice looking bike. However, there are a few things that I find a bit weird, or impractical with the BMW design:
  • Touch controls? Are those going to work with gloves on?
  • Rather than have mirrors, they have a couple of video cameras in the seat, and screens in the front. That looks nice, but I think that the cameras are a bit low, and your blind spot would be rather significant, since they are way behind you. Also, mirror technology is awesome! Works with no power, easy to adjust. Unless your camera has cool features like working in low light, I don't see an advantage.
  • There's no splash guard on the back wheel; it looks like dirt / water from that wheel are going to go right into the cooling fan. I wonder how long before the fan seizes up.

I like the fact that they have a J1772 connector. I wonder if they will have a standard wall socket cable as well.

A J1772 connector on the Empules would be great, even if it's limited to 120 V. Never mind, the bike is fine as is. Just sell me one already!
