How To...
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:02:59 AM »
Well I'm approaching my 6k service fast and don't want to bring the bike to the dealership for this service. These places are charging up to $100/hr and their workmanship is questionable at best. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do it myself. So I thought I would start a "How To" thread. Of course the wiki site is great but lacking all the services that need to be performed.
I've looked up online on how to change fork oil and change brake fluid but I can't find any good examples that would apply to my R. Can anyone help me on this service? Either where to find this info or if they did the work themselves, provide a step by step with a list of the proper tools?

The second link on brake system servicing is much more accurate and complete.

The first video fails to mention the necessity of using the correct DOT rating and using a new, unopened can of fluid each time. Also, while the narrator states that the technician is bleeding the system of air, the video fails to show this. Lame.

Thanks. I found this video and looks like the best example for the Empulse simply because the Ducati looks to have the exact set up as the Empulse.
Ducati Front Brake Fluid Bleed 848 1098 1198
I bought the Mityvac. However I wasn't able to flush the front because I couldn't get the fluid to come out the bleeder valve. When I opened the bleeder valve the whole assembly came loose and fluid came out of where it was connected. Luckily I had wrapped a rag around it before hand so no worries there... But no fluid out of the bleeder valve. I tried a couple of times but nothing. The good news is that it was clear and didn't look like it needed to be changed. So I simply put the Amsoil dot 4 back in the system, tested the brakes and I'm good. First chance I get I'll bring it to my closest dealership and have them do it. I have to admit that I don't like the service I have received from either one of the FL dealerships so far. Eurocycles I will NEVER deal with again, and Unique Super Bikes does not follow up with things very well at all so if they have trouble with the little things it's hard to trust them with anything else...
The rear needed to be done badly. The fluid looked like soy sauce. I had no issue with that. I simply used the same method with no problem.
As far a the fork oil is concerned... I'm going to follow my dad's advice and that is if it's not leaking then leave it alone. Inspect it often and once you see it start to leak then change it.

+1 on the mityvac! Made changing fluid a snap! Took maybe 20 minutes for both front and single rear on my VFR.

I got mine at Harbor Freight:
