New Hybrid Engine
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:42:00 PM »
This blows my mind.

http://jalopnik.com/how-formula-ones-amazing-new-hybrid-turbo-engine-works-1506450399

Energy recovery is taken from the turbo's turbine wheel, not the engine's crank shaft. Conversely, energy can be put back in through the turbo to eliminate turbo lag. That way the use the energy recovery system to control boost rather than bleeding it through a waste gate, and that excess energy is fed into another motor that is connected to the crankshaft (and the crankshaft electric motor can still collect engine braking energy). I am utterly speechless!

BMW was talking about a tri-turbo engine some time ago, with one of the turbos linked to an electric motor.

Looks like a pretty cool design .. recovering energy from the exhaust and sending it to the motor crank is pretty interesting.
