Brammo Empulse Recall
« on: February 11, 2015, 01:13:30 PM »
Just saw this:

Quote
Summary:
Brammo, Inc. (Brammo) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Empulse and Empulse R motorcycles manufactured November 19, 2012, to July 8, 2014. Oil leaking from the transmission breather tube may blow onto the rear fender and tire.
Consequence:
If oil leaks and contacts the rear tire, a loss of control may occur, increasing the risk of crash.
Remedy:
Brammo will notify owners, and dealers will install a new transmission breather baffle kit, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 12, 2015. Owners may contact Brammo customer service at 1-541-482-9555.

Here's the announcement:

Aha, that explains why I have been seeing that happening on my bike lately.
I read on another thread that it was probably due to cold weather but maybe it's a design issue.
I just cleaned the drops after my riding and had no scary moments yet.
Good to hear we will get it fixed soon.

Well this is already more logical, because I had a serious discussion with my dealer and the technician Brammo, we discuss the level and amount of oil in the transmission, I was told that if he took more than 1 liter that was causing him to spit, and I told them I realized that my bike had just 1 ltr, so that was not the cause, they so far have only made me bel ray 10w 30, but I hope they call me and I implement this improvement. I have pictures with all wheel filled with oil, the truth is that it was very dangerous to drive in these conditions.

I think I get credit for the first report of this happening  :-\

Admittedly, I haven't had any issues since I put less oil in the transmission.

Here's an article on the recall. I notice the article says 149 vehicles were 100% of those manufactured between November 9, 2012 and July 8, 2014. So it's probably pretty safe to bet that the production run of Empulses is less than 200 units, maybe less than 150 depending on when they stopped production.

Very odd vehicle count - this old recall from 2013 indicates 605 units (potentially) affected...

look like mine is not affected since my VIN finish with 000856. according to that document, from 000013 to 000831 it's 149 unit produced. Im curious how many bike produced after that date ( july 8, 2014)

katacrak-

We are currently working with EU authorities and dealers to issue a similar recall to the one recently announced in the US. This information will be made available soon as well as guidance for current owners to safely operate their vehicle until the recall is complete. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we resolve this issue. If you have additional questions or concerns please contact Brammo Service.

Here is a decently written summary to hold you over until formal notification.

I have ridden 12000 miles with temperatures as low as 30F.  I have never had a problem with my bike.  I use Royal Purple Oil.  I wonder if it flows better at low temperatures than the original oil.

well I guess it's good that I don't ride in cold weather....

oh wait, I do... :)

almost to the 10,000 mile mark...haven't seen any oil, but I am doing mostly city riding, so rarely over 5000 rpm for more than a few seconds here and there...

I've riden in extremely cold weather, too, with no warmup blasting up to 5k+ RPM. Other than the first time it happened (~10f), I have had no issues. But I also only put in a quart of oil, and do not add if oil isn't coming out of the check hole.

Keeping the revs low for the first couple minutes isn't much of a problem. The bike works better at lower RPM when it's really cold, anyway.

I didn't experience this leak until October 2014 after my first oil change at the break-in mileage.  Bel-Ray Gear-Saver 80W was the replacement oil.  After replacing this again with one of the 10W30 oils, the leak is no more.

Note:  The Seattle area has experienced a very mild winter this year (only one day of snow on the ground, and that was Thanksgiving Saturday), so I have no cold temperatures to blame for this.
