problems: second gear up to third

<< < (2/2)

skuzzle:
The only problems I have is shifting from 1st to 2nd when it's cold (30F-40F) for the first 2 miles of riding.  I have never had any issues with 2nd to 3rd.  I use Royal Purple Max-Cycle SAE 10W-30.  The bike has just under 15000 miles.

In other words does the clutch fully open the plates?
My bike needs some time to warm up and get the clutch to fully open.

The bike will move forward if you rev the motor while holding the clutch.  This is true even after riding 10+ miles in warm weather.

flar:
I never have to use the clutch on upshifts even 2nd -> 3rd.  I'd suspect a problem in the transmission.

The coldest I've ridden, though, would be 50F - maybe some upper 40s on occasion...

katacrak:
I think is necesary all the time, activate the clutch for maintain the garanty.

vtbrammorider:
I've also had some extra resistance between 2nd and 3rd but you have to remember this is where N is. A few things that can help:

Make sure you keep up with the oil changes  (I know it's obvious).

Depending on the age of your bike flush/bleed the clutch line.

Make sure there isn't excessive play in your shift linkage (and that a bolt isn't loose, don't ask how I know this ;)).

katacrak:

The gearshift have mecanical problems....
