6.6 kW IP67 charger:
« on: November 14, 2016, 09:32:25 PM »
Anyone tried installing higher power charger onboard? I know there is a separate thread where Athlon has tried useing two 3.3kW chargers, but there has been no updates on that. Here is a charger that could work for the empulse, except that i dont know whether the 225-450VDC would be compatible with the battery on the Empulse.

Here's the spe datasheet for the charger:

This one is probably just the liquid cooled version of the one in the first link.

Thoughts?

If the 225-450 VDC is output, then it would not be compatible. Empulse is rated at only like 105 volts, so would charge at a slightly higher voltage than that. It would not charge at 225 volts.

I did some reading up on Li-on cell charging basics and i think i get it now.

The nominal voltage of the battery is around ~104v. So for an Empulse TT its rated at 100Ah and for the Brammo Empulse its around 90Ah. These are the 1C rates for the batteries for the 2 bikes.

Right now i see that my TT charges at around 24A DC which is about 0.25C. I guess we just need a charger which can produce somewhere around 0.5C worth of DC at the same voltage rate (104V). This could potentially double the charging rate. As far as i know keeping the charge rate to something less than 0.5C will keep the battery life optimal.

So yes, this 6.6kW wont work since the voltage range exceeds out of the battery's voltage capacity. We would need an onboard charger which has a voltage range of 50-122V (something like the charger thats currently on the empulse) with a higher C output. Based on that we might need a suitable DC-DC converter too (not entirely sure if the stock converter gets the job done).

Or an arrangement with 2 chargers which is seemingly more complicated.

Found this one from the zero forum. Looks like it might be compatible.i t has a 34-132VDC output with 64A max current. It might work for the Empulse. Thoughts?

for country with 3 phase is easier to just add 2 more charger on the other 2 phase , because chaning from the original Eletek Valere 3kw of the brammo to a 6kw charger need also to update the firmware to manage the extra ampere

That would apply to Germany, but why should I not need an update with other charging devices? And which would be in question? Has anyone ever tried that?
