Capacitor and battery research
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:24:47 PM »
My newspaper reports that the DOE is finding research at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, that "might make batteries obsolete in electric vehicles". The article reports that "a $2.25 million grant will help complete development of a small, light, powerful and reliable capacitor that promises at least a 10-fold hike in energy density over current designs".

The next article says that "proponents of batteries haven't thrown in the towel just yet". A team at the University of Illinois has a new battery system that it says offers all the benefits of batteries and capacitors in one unit. Materials science and engineering professor Paul Braun says his system gives "capacitor-like power with battery-like energy". Braun told Gizmag that his batteries can charge and discharge 10-100 times faster than their conventional counterparts.

It sounds like there are great possibilities for electric motorcycle performance in the future.

$2.25M is nothing.  I know of motive batteries that cost more than that, not including the research that went into them.  DOE spends around $100M on basic research on batteries.  But China is probably an order of magnitude more than that.  If you want to have your mind blown, look up Lithium Air batteries.  That's where I hope things go in the near future.
