Zero Emissions...
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:20:48 PM »
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/ecomotors-chief-don-runkle-electric-vehicles-are-not-zero-emissions/2011/05/26/AGpwGHCH_story.html

I get frustrated that people try to make all electric sound dirty.

A) Yes there is too much coal used today for make electricity. Guess what? That can and will change. It is changing a little bit every day.

B) Diesel will never be "clean". It can get cleaner, but it will always be dirty. And it will always be something that countries can and will fight over. I hope my granddaughter never owns a vehicle that runs on oil, gas, diesel...and she probably wont.

C) I have solar panels. Many people do...I wish more did, but it is growing and will keep growing.  Every electron going into my rides will be clean, renewable and zero emissions.

D) While countries will fight over oil, nobody can stop the sun from hitting my roof, nor stop the winds from blowing through the canyons here in New Mexico. Now we may end up in wars over water, but sun and wind are gifts from above and no man can take those away.

E) There is no E.

ha, somebody else is tired of the zero isn't zero...

the nice thing is: My Brammo CAN be zero emissions with each fueling up by my solar panels. Any electric car I buy CAN be zero emissions with each fueling up.

Will all electric vehicles be zero emissions? Nope, but they can be. NO ICE cars or bikes can ever be zero emissions...and that is the key.

Over time all electric vehicles can and might be true zero emissions...ICEs can not....a huge difference.

I did not read the articles and maybe they mention this fact, but people that take this position rarely ever mention that an oil refinery that makes gasoline ALSO uses coal produced electricity to refine the oil into gas or diesel fuel. So not only do we get the pollution from the burning of the gasoline, we also get the pollution from burning the coal to make the energy to make the gasoline.

Also, from an economic and political angle, we are sending money out of the country that will not be reinvested in our country to people that don't believe in civil liberties, like the right of a women to drive a car or the right go to the doctor without her husband's permission. Most electric companies are locally owned and reinvest in the community and provide local jobs. So I'll take electricity, even from coal, over gasoline made from foreign crude.

Yes, I'm sure we all agree that Don Runkle is a bone head. >:(

He has an engine to sell and he's not going to let facts get in the way of his sales pitch. He is correct that most of the current sources of electricity are polluters, but to claim that "EcoMotors’ engine technology enables car companies to produce diesel-powered vehicles that have a lower, overall carbon footprint than any electric automobile available today." is a bold faced lie.

As Gavin pointed out, anyone who uses solar or wind power is going to have a much lower carbon footprint.

Sadly, he's singing the song that most people want to hear: No need to change your lifestyle, you can keep on doing what you're doing, just use my engine. And since that's what people want to hear, that's who they will listen to.

What a world we live in... :(
