Zero has started doing that with their late 2017 and all 2018 models. So it can be done. I have updated the BMS and MBB firmware for my 2018 Zero S in my garage about 6 times so far this year. I typically takes about 30 minutes each time, over my slow WiFi internet. Probably not for the Brammo/Victory bikes, though.
