Wheel Bearing Falling Out

I'm starting a new thread on this, even though it's related to my last post. I just had my rear wheel bearings replaced after one of them failed. I suspect the new ones are going to fail, too.



I asked my dealer, and they recommended loctite for bearings. I'm not convinced, but I'll give it a shot. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Looks like an opportunity to upgrade to the OZ wheels set in the Brammo catalog.

I investigated this and in at least two cases it seems to be the spacer tube (inbetween the bearings, inside the wheel hub) is fitted the wrong way round.
This makes the spacers push the bearings out again.

As there are several cases now, it might be a glitch in the dealer manual?

How can the spacer be mounted backwards? It's just a tube? How would one know which way to install it if it is different?

Sure it's a tube, but it has a machined step on one end.
This will reach inside the bearings inner race, about half way trough, to meet with the flanged spacer on the left (sprocket) side.
Sure it will fit the other way round, bearings will fit fine... untill the wheel is mounted.
The right side flanged spacer will be forced against the stepped side of tube, and it will push the left bearing out again.

This will make the wheel look just like in your video.

Take the wheel off again, it will only take a slight effort to take the bearing out, since it's allready on its way. flip the tube, make sure the stepped side is on the cush drive side, reinstall the bearing.
please do not use locktite, or an extra spacer, no need for that, trust me.

JeffK, I owe you a tasty beverage. You were exactly right. I took a video to show everyone, which will be posted in  a few days. I just took a 10 mile trip, and the cush drive stayed in place, and the bike felt solid.

Just wanted to thank you Jeff for pointing out the spacer tube! I had my wheel bearings replaced at a dealership and they had flipped the spacer inside. Guess it pays to just do things yourself.
