My name is Rick and I'm a re-lapse bike addict.............
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:37:17 PM »
Hi all. Just ordered an Empulse 10, #1065, and pretty much starting from scratch after being away from 2 wheels for 35 yrs. Started researching and following the EV/bike scene soon after seeing the futuristic alternate power bike in one of the Star Trek movies. Sooo cooool. Why not an electric bike? What's holding it back?
Reeeally liked the Empulse from first sight on the company website but, told myself it needed a fairing like the TT racer or a Ducatti.
Then, on Easter Sunday I saw the pic of the Empulse RR..........ordered it before the drool hit the keyboard. Still haven't told the wife.
Quit bikes when in 2 years, lost 3 friends, all riding '73 Kawasaki 750 triples. My brother wound up in a full body cast for a year after a head-on with a Camaro, he on a Suzuki RM250. No helmet. Flew 85'. Never lost conciousness.
 I'm over it. I'm back.

Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your friend's deaths. A death of a friend's brother from a motorcycle accident fifteen years ago made me avoid motorcycles until recently.

The experience is so fun, that the added risk is worth it to me. I ride with a full-face helmet, with armor in my jacket and riding pants.

Have you been on an electric motorcycle before?

No Phantom, have not climbed on one yet. Have visualized 'brakes only' action and realized there's very little daydreaming allowed. What's a typical brake service on Bremmo systems run? Manuals look like it's a pretty involved starting procedure due to needed interlocks. That's fine. Would like to see more of a user trouble shooting guide/diagnoses section. Is there a battery temp gauge? Is a battery trade in program on the horizon? If I get an Empulse 8 edition, can I get 2 more batts installed later to make it a '10'?
I see the biggest danger as some pedestrian stepping off the curb infront of me because they weren't looking and didn't hear anything. The horn better be Manly and Urgent in tone and volume............
Maybe I missed it but is there a 0-60 time for the '10'?
Drool break :P

I only have 2,000 miles on my Enertia, but I expect the brake service to be the same as a standard motorcycle. The starting procedure starts out a little tricky, but quickly becomes automatic. I look at as it an added security system so someone can't ride off with it if I leave the key in it. The Enertia horn is not really manly, but it gets the job done.

I am guessing that you will be able to upgrade an 8.0 to 10.0 without much trouble.

I have not seen the specs for 0-60 on the Empulse yet, but maybe someone else can chime in on what the prototype can do.

The start-up (and the charging) procedure for the Enertia Plus and the Enertia will be simplified -- something like -turn key to start the bike.  Plug it in to start charging.

Possibly. The motor controller may need to be reprogrammed or replaced with a larger unit (battery modules are 5S 110V instead of 4S 88V), and it's possible that the battery tray would need to be modified.

That was the first thing I complained to Brian about when I got my Enertia. After over a thousand startups it's pretty automatic now and doesn't bug me at all except for how long you have to hold the button (it's much nicer after charging though). Hitting the kill switch has become automatic before dismounting.

+1 on the kill switch.
I still have an occasional glitch (user error) when starting.  Unfortunately, it seems to happen when I'm showing someone how cool it is when I turn the bike on.  "Oops, wait a sec.  Didn't have the key in the right position..."

My EMS GPR-S has a load of problems, but the starting and charging procedures are not one of them. To start it, you flip the kill switch on the right handlebar to off, turn on the ignition with the key, wait a second for the contactor to click, flip the kill switch on and ride off. It all takes about 3 seconds. To charge, you just pull the on-board charger's cord out of the compartment in the false tank and plug the 6-foot long cord into the nearest 120V wall outlet. Then it just starts charging - or it used to until the BMS melted.
