Custom tail tidy!
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:24:22 PM »
Welllllll I may or may not have become impatient for the availability of the official accessory, so a couple hundred bucks of waterproof LEDs and aluminum and some gracious welding by the housemate later:

More pics to follow!  Gonna get a proper camera to take some proper glamour shots.

Hey Jeff - You told me about this at Plug-In day, so congrats on knocking it out so fast! That really puts the tidy in tail tidy!

I don't see where you decided to mount the rear turn signals... did you integrate them into the tail assembly?

Here's an idea for version 2: hinge the license plate so it drops down only when you see a cop behind you. Or vice versa.  ;)

Thanks!  Yep will definitely do a more complete write-up with some more detailed pictures but haha I couldn't wait to post it.

The rear turn signals are now yellow LED strips mounted on the backs of the passenger peg brackets.  (drilled small holes through the backs of the brackets so that the wires run up the inside hollow into the seat area)

They're ridiculously bright, and especially when combined with the bar-end turn signals I feel like they are way more visible than before!

Brilliant! (Literally). That should make freeway lane changes very apparent.

Now, if I go back and enlarge the original image, I can just make out something along the back of the support brackets, which means they blend in nicely.

No side cases for this bike, though. But knowing you, you’ll figure out a way to make the entire case blink!

For the LEDs themselves I went through Custom Dynamics

  • 2 red on red strips of 50 LEDs each for the brake
  • 2 amber on smoke strips of 40 LEDs each for the turn signals
  • 1 clear on clear strip of 6 LEDs for the license plate illuminator
  • 1 dual stage converter (size 4) to make the brake lights actually be brake lights

I also had on hand two beefy resistors, which came in handy -- when I hooked everything up, all of a sudden both my front and rear turn signals were LED-based so there was no resistance to make the flasher relay actually do its job.  Note that if you do this sort of thing and still have the front stock turn signals, you probably won't need these.  I got them when I first got the Oberon bar-ends and didn't need them then.

For the actual metal bits, there are essentially two pieces:

A.) A piece of aluminum bent to (approximately) the rear curve of the seat, welded to two other pieces of aluminum that run under the seat to two of the tail assembly bolt holes. This has the brake lights on the outer side of the curve, and the license plate illuminator on the inner.

B.) A smaller piece of aluminum L-bracket secured to the other two bolt holes, used to hold the license plate.

The turn signals are attached to the passenger brackets, and all the wires run rather nicely up into the back area under the seat behind the charger.

Will take some close-up pictures when I have some better light!

VERY cool, Jeff!  Nice job!  My favorite part is the rear turn signals integrated on the passenger pegs... clever.

Thanks!!  Yeah I am super pleased with how it came out.  The turn signal locations especially -- with the tail assembly gone, the backs of the passenger peg brackets are quite visible from all angles.

I'm going to do a bit of rev 2 work . . . right now the white LEDs are basically just spraying light everywhere downwards (courtesy of some pro electrical tape work) and I'd like to build a little thing to funnel the light specifically at just the license plate.

Ah!  Sorry, I keep meaning to do this.  Work's been nuts.  Need a spare weekend, and believe me there will be all kind of close-up bracket porn.  However, I DID recently get some very lovely glamour shots taken of the bike, which I am going to post right the hell now.
